High streets such as Connaught Place in New Delhi and Brigade Road in Bangalore are back in retailers’ priority lists as they prepare for a temporary lull in mall supply next year.

Shoppers Stop, Reliance Retail, Madura Garments, Arvind Brands, United Colors of Benetton and others plan greater presence in high streets and co-location.

Converting Commercial Space Into Retail Space

idea posted by Sheetal Jadhav Sales/BD Manager, Future Group

Developers can boost retail space in high streets across cities by converting commercial properties into retail space. Properties having locked-in commercial tenants for around three years can easily be expanded to house retail outlets as well.Developers may be prompted to demolish old buildings or theaters to develop retail stores to meet the demand in high streets.

High visibility, high-traffic location and great display

Retailers can make the most of absence in mall activity by converting their high street stores or taking up new store locations in high traffic areas. Then in turn they have to improve the visibility of the store trhough external means like bright signages and and interesting window display's. Also the right lux level (unit of measurement of light in a store) would create a positive atmosphere in attracting customers and tempting them to purhcase. In fact the visual merchandising team of a brand has a very active role to play in converting a high street store into an attractive shopping outlet.

retailers can make money by entering into all places where METRO railway stations are coming up , this is strictly for cities where METRO connectivity is already there or coming up, because the FAR(Floor area ratio or Floor space Index(fsi)) is high near this METRO railway stations and business hours will start from first train in morning to last train.

Attracting Low & Middle Income Groups.

The only way to attract the mass public is to offer them something which no other can. The ways of attractions may be in the form of reduced price, offers, buyback offers. The timings can be matched for the festive season & salary dates so as to make an impact. The biggest crowd to be focused is middle income group & not the high income group in Metros, hence only the best buy offers with cross promotion campaigns work in Indian Metros.

High Street shopping will always be there, it is a temporary phase in a market where Mall culture starts. If the high street stores stick to basics, attractive Window, good service, customer will eventually return. As lots of people do not enjoy shopping with multi level shoppers.
