Shopping in India have witnessed a revolution with the change in the consumer buying behavior and the whole format of shopping also altering. Industry of retail in India which have become modern can be seen from the fact that there are multi- stored malls, huge shopping centers, and sprawling complexes which offer food, shopping, and entertainment all under the same roof.

India retail industry is expanding itself most aggressively, as a result a great demand for real estate is being created. Indian retailers preferred means of expansion is to expand to other regions and to increase the number of their outlets in a city. So, how do you see its scope in the rural sector as well?

Government should make large investments

idea posted by Shailena Varma Logistics Manager, Target

Rural India provides a highly unexplored market for the expansion of retail activity. The penetration of the organized retail specifically is very low, as approximately only ten thousand out of six lakh villages in India have access to organized retail services.

In my view government should make large investments in rural infrastructure and should push income and demand level to organise the retail sector in rural India. With the empowerment of rural people with education, employment, higher purchasing power, better media exposure and better connectivity with outside world, rural retail sector will be successful

You are right Shailena and Govt should take the first steps to ensure adequate infrastructure and basic needs to be taken care of for the technology to take place. I agree with you completely!! :)

Add your argument:

interest of retail organisations should be arised on rural areas

According to me,first interest should be raised from end of retail organisations to make investment in rural areas.Unless they will find it profitable to make investment over there, they wont go for that project. Then obviously govt should come ahead to invest a lumsum for improving infrastructure.

Consolidation of rural income resources

idea posted by Nagpal Singh Sales and Business Development, Babel Group of companies

Major chunk of income that rural India procures, come through irregular/uncertain agricultural activities, which is vastly dependent on rain... alas! not sure again, in my view schemes like NREGA

Bang on...Nagpal!!! Assured and regular income and a positive outlook of future earnings will be helpful in motivating the rural folks to spend...spend continuosly. Compare their urban counterparts and you would observe that urban retailers are mostly the salaried class who have a fixed source and level of income that enables them to plan their spendings

Rewind and think of the year gone by. Recession was the key word and job threats were looming large over every urbanite's mind. Didnt we see a drop in retail spending? Coz everyone was doubtful for the future and wanted to save every penny

Providing infrastructure and feasible models wherein a minimum income is guranteed can help in achieving consistent sales. Otherwise bumper seasonal sales, as they happen now after each harvest, will continue followed by a lull till the next harvest is done.

India is an agrarian economy. Everything to the cities is flowing from the villages but the corresponding benefits are not flowing back. We are living in a supply driven value chain wherein we are made to consume whatever is available/ grown thereby rendering the farmer a very little scope of increasing his earnings. Market driven value chain is the need of the hour. The farmers should be made aware of the demand and they should produce accordingly. This will lend credibility to their efforts and could help in increasing the farm incomes. This increased- consistent income can help improve spending as well thus paving way for a successful rural retail model

Lets First deal with Infrastructure

Lets first deal with providing clean drinking water, roads, electricity etc infrastructural issues. Most of our villages don't have them. How can we have organized business without organizing such issues?

Developing outlets in accordance to customer taste

idea posted by Wajid.Pathan Enterprenuer (Designer /Developer/Supplier), Self Employed

people in rural areas mostly dont prefer places which look costly or have a rich look.outlets should be developed in such a way that they are  simple in appearence & not too costly for the buyer as income is limited. The rural market is fair bit different than urban market.for any sector to be successful it has to cater to the needs of the customer & attract  consumers so if retail  sector is to develop in this segment the outlets developed should be according to the customers to be served.
