entertain the use of metro rails in urban as well as rural areas, so that we can avoid further development of roads.

You mean a inter-metro rail..say between Delhi & Mumbai?

Believe we should use the road architect like other countries e.g. Thailand which has effectively and efficiently used the same road for multiple traffic in Bangkok. May be over bridges in same direction for small or light vehicular moment would be best . As this will ease up the chaos. The point to keep in mind is can we make such a road system without getting involved in sin of scandals... If we can then I believe is the best solution available... |

This is not-so-easy option but in Pune I have seen few trees successfully replanted. This task needs to be done with great care. Extreme care for first few days after replanting. Kudos to then municipal commissioner Mr.Ramakant Gaikwad,IAS. |

As an Engineer you must be aware in one acre Plot you will have about 16 30'x40' plots and you can construct one 2-3 bed house if you follow building laws and 2 Two bed house and 2 single bed house if voilate the law. This is called law abiding horizontal development /modified law voilated horizontal development. Instead if you go for vertical development in one acre you can construct about 90 two bed houses (Flats) living alomost 60%-70% open area for parking, garden and play area as well as shops. Instead of widening the Roads, demolish all the houses (which are over 30-50 years old when road widening neccesity comes)and redevelop the area in to an Aprtment condomonium, So that there wont be any need for cutting the trees and widening of the roads since you will not park your vehicles on road side or the sop keepers use the foot path to extend their shop and make pedestrian to use the road and those choke the road. There is no need to pay any compensation to the plot owners and the money can be used for reconstruction of the area rather than rebuilding of the road alone.

While widening the Roads for making way for a Metro in Bangalore lots of trees have been chopped of. Buildings on either side also have been demolished in some areas. All these are happening because the way plan our cities even now. For exapmle look at this: The building byelaw of the city permits FAR of 1.75 and setbacks to be left for a 30'x40' plot 3' on two sides and 5' on the other two sides. that means one can construct 1232 sft building of which maxmum of 650 ssft in ground floor and the rest in first floor. However you will finds 4 story buildings coming up every where now. How is it posible without the voilation of law? earlier only on ehouse was there now there are four houses in every such Plot. That means instead of one car, now four cars. Trafic density in the area increases because of voilation of law. Need for cutting tree arised because of increased traffic density on the existing road necessitating widening of the road. People by voilating the building laws of the area have constructed houses without leaving any setbacks as a result Road means a LANE PROTECTED BY TWO Rows of walls not houses any more. People themselves chopped of trees on either side of roads for making way for the high raise building. They park their cars on either side of road. a 40 feet Road has now become 24 feet Road with four fold increas in traffic density. All these cars come to the main road necessitating widening the 80 feet and 100 feet wide roads further. You will find shops only on such roads and people park their vehicles on either side making it narrow. When all of us are responsible for this why punish only trees. What you ahve done to the people who produce children and beleive in "broona hatya maha papam" and voilate the law and construct more budilgs voilating the law to make room for these future children. What you have done to the politician and the official who permits such voilation by taking bribe? Why only punish trees which help cleans the air of particulate matter and enrich the atmosphere with oxygen and provide shade? You are punishing the good and allowing the bad to survive.

If the tree is a special species it is fine to pay for it. But replanting is a costly affair. IAS ( Big bosses do it for credit as they have done a great task.)/Top Mangement people they do to it to pose as a great achievement.Assess the cost effectiveness.

After all roads need to be widened for adding a lane. Keep the tree and make the new lane on the other side of the tree. Make people follow lane descipline and impose strict panalties on the people not following.

Yes it is difficult to change the lane for every tree. At the same time we all know that the accidents take place not because of the presence of trees, but because of driving habits of our people. Our people have all the time for performing morning relegiuos rituals or for spending time in front of mirror or for wasting time chitchating with a neighbour. They dont start early and start rushing to their office or to reach a marriage well before the murth time. I have seen two wheelers using foot path some time. They overtake you from left as well as from right. Most drivers just try to use every opportunity to overtake you weather right or wrong. They dont follow " no free left turn signs. people have least regards for automated traffic signals and Even after automation of traffic signals we need a Traffic Policman too regulate. Some times people dissregard even the traffic Police and the traffic Police might welcome it because they will be weighting for such incidents either to make money for themselves or to book a case and collect fine to acheive their quota of number of cases booked and financial target acheived. Such is the case in India. So dont blame the trees. You will find in many places young children of primary school using mopeds/scooters and the parents dont stop them and if teachers try to stop them then they had it. In my openion we need not bother about people dying or breaking their legs in accidents that happen because of voilation of traffic rules. We have more population than required in this country and if voilators dye it will be good for the country and rest of the population. In my openion we can save every other tree if we have a mind to do it. Trees help cleanse the atmosphere of particulate matter as well as carbon dioxide and that is needed on every road.We learn in the history about Ashoka planting trees on either side of Road and Most kings later continued this drive. Today we dont care about it. Speed is the slogan where it is least required. Reduce speed of population production and not that of vehicles you drive then you will be safe to live healthy in this world and will be able to avoid killing trees that help cleans the atmosphere to enable you to live healthy.

To retain the trees at he same place is very difficult. For every tree we cannot change the alignment of the road.Sometimes i have seen a tree is left in the road in the way of traffic which leads to accidents.Replanting the same tree in other place is a costly affair.Better you plant additional trees as Sameer suggested is a better sollution.

This is an extremely sensible option though it is one that requires patience and long-term commitment.

Cutting tress are mandatory for widening roads, hence only choice behind us are to plant more trees and support them to grow.
