By now, most of us know not to respond to e-mails from generous Nigerians with money to transfer.

However, not as many of us know how to avoid devious marketing while shopping online or by phone. According to Visa Canada, 20 per cent of credit card holders have been a victim of unauthorized charges as a result of an offer they accepted online or over the phone.

Deceptive marketers ensnare unsuspecting consumers in a number of subtle ways, such as by pre-checking consent boxes, burying the details of the offers in the terms and conditions and making cancellations or returns difficult. Once victimized, consumers can be caught in a cycle of recurring charges for products and services they do not want.

So, How to  avoid falling prey to deceptive marketing practices?? Share your views on this important thread people...

Know the terms of sale

idea posted by Sheetal Jadhav Sales/BD Manager, Future Group

It is said that only 22 per cent of online shoppers read the merchant’s entire terms and conditions of sale before making a purchase. This is how most frauds occur. One needs to inquire about the company’s refund and complaint process before you buy.

For any sale or purchase it is absolutely essential to the terms. If not known one should ask question to the company till such time the customer is satisfied then decide whether to purchase or not.

In any case problem occurs the company will tell you that you must have signed the documents with ‘*’ mark at its footer (terms & conditions). And you can’t deny with that -

Simply do this before purchasing:-

Call their customers care services & ask as many as questions you want but related to your purchase & record that in your mobile. And while transacting read the forms properly & enter proper Card Number with proper price of the Product & take a print of your transaction. At last take the computer generated bill from company with proper product number, brand, price, date & see it doesn’t have any star mark for their new hidden conditions whether brand related or their service related.

One should opt for mobile banking for SMS alerts, if one uses Credit Cards or Debit cards often.

If one is caught is this cycle, can seek help from Consumer Court

We should also use common sense to check whether the product (we are going to buy ) could actually be so cheap in price.Like the air tickets for rupee one ads, we know that an air ticket can not cost so low , so it must be having some hidden costs

Multilevel due diligence is a must

Ask for endorsement from any satisfied customer, check online reviews on mouthshut.com, discussion forums & other sites, discuss with friends, colleagues & peers to know their experiences, ask for draft copy of policy/contract document, seek professional help from consultants, ask for chart of month-wise money inflows/outflows information for next 10 or 20 years.

The legal document i.e. Purchase Order/Contract should cleary mention the terms and conditions and should be followed religiously and should be considered as COMMITMENT by the buyer and the seller.

Usually people fall for usurpious marketing practices because of their own greed. If you are not greedy and learn to value your hard earned money, you will always look twice or thrice before investing in some thing where you had a douibt. Plus it is always better to be informed as much as possible. Knowledge is what is going to help you in life. a better informed person will rely on facts and figures and not on hearsay or wild adjectives.

Think about it...Most of our actions and behavior are guided by some set of beliefs which we have nurtured based on assumptions. Ant these assumptions come from the outside world in the form of strong messages... We have not seen God but still believe in him and perform rituals and do various other things because from the very childhood we are programmed to believe that everything written and told by religious mascots is to be true... Now lets talk about some simple examples...During 70's Cigarette Smoking was considered good in United States, because companies and doctors of U.S had marketed the belief that Cigarette Smoking improves Manhood... Its the same with Policits: B.J.P markets the idea that it is the only party which fights for Hindu rights and Hindu wellbeing... Congress markets that it is the true secular party and does not get influenced with any religious groups... Many of us believe this kind of things upto certain extent and do vote based on it... Deodrandts: All Deo adds try to programme our mind, that Deos help in attracting opposite sex..bunch of crap..but after a long and vigrous campaign they succeed in programming part of the young mass.. I can go on...sorry if I have written too long..the topic is kind of interesting....
