Sustainabilty in connection with the construction industry will mean consume the present resources and generate for the future consumption. It can not be achieved by construction industry alone. It is would be the collective effort of all stake holders involved in the industry. Like client, local bodies, promoters, service providers. The rules need to be supporting the sustainablity - use of recycled materials - minimal use of natural resources like timber, energy efficient materials , fuels - concept of green buildings - conserving natural resources - recycling the wastes generated - use of innovative technology like solar power, wind power and so on. In india, rules and acts do well rather than self control mechanism. if the acts do not permit, we generally follow, else, we carve the projects with all natural resources like timber and make the city - the concrete jungle. So, Sustainabilty is possible only by the collective effort of all agents involved |

I agree with you Mr.Vaanan, but it is imperative to look into the costs of the raw materials, labour and the energy requirements, In the recent times the cost of the raw materials like cement, steel and even fly ash prices are shooting up, to sustain the growth govt should take enough steps to govern the bankers to be soft on loans which help funding the industry
Identifying the potential growth area, developing it and also developing the catchment area so that the growth is sustained and also contained
I agree with you vaanan. We can attain sustainability only by efficiently utilizing all the agents that contribute for the construction like energy, fuel and recycling process. So as you said we need collective effort to attain sustainability.

Meeting clients’ functional requirements may not require new buildings and structures. Refurbishment and/or renovation which improves their sustainability may work better. Because demolishing and re building may maximize the use of energy. Reusing existing assets without replacing or transforming them will be more effective method to bring sustainability in urban construction. |

In city infrastructure planning there should be need assesment, and a careful need assesment will help to design and implement sustainable development projects. |

Amazing idea contest Nand Jha and please keep creating such interesting stuff and from my point of view design for minimum waste also brings sustainability. Design out waste both during construction and from the useful life and afterlife of the building or structure. Think whole life costs and involve the supply chain. Specify materials with care and consider more efficient use of resources. Think about using recycled materials. |
