You are a founding CEO, starting a company and you need help. Building your team is a complicated, tricky business.

You can be the best judge of character, you can do all the references (back door included), you can read all the books, you can even include your investors on the interview train, but you can still make bad hires. There might be circumstances (that you never anticipate), which create changes in otherwise normal behavior, possibly yielding disaster.

All the problems you have outlined are normal not only in startups but in life in general. The best way to deal with them is to set clear expectations, clear role definitions and make people feel like they are part of the "family". A start up cannot afford a good reward structure. Till it stabilizes in to a profitable concern, the feeling of ownership is the best reward an employer can offer.

I feel Mr. Ramesh's view is correct. A sense of ownership among the employees motivate them to make any new firms to make a successful one. Most importantly they need to get the appreciation and reward once the firm cross the break even point and grows larger

Build a low fat company

idea posted by Nikhil Jain Senior Consultant, Hewitt Associates

People tend to over-hire so that they can scale to meet the demands of a hockey stick business that’s coming any day now. Don’t hire until it’s clear you have one of those hockey stick situations. You’ll burn less venture, social and emotional capital. The more bodies, the more drama and associated management.

The fewer bodies, the less of that and likely the more you get done. You’ll be able to make decisions faster and implement them even faster. Understand, that in the early stages of a company, getting small wins is key. Momentum is like that: the sum of the small wins yields the bigger win, so on and so forth.

Start-up a crucial time for any organization because future of firm depends on it that How the company build his image in market and among all employees. Because there are many example where company build his image with employees but can't do better in market. and the result is, Employees left his position and joined other firm. At that time we require a decision of good manager which include team spirit, market view, team division and more profit based rewards. Higher designations for higher profit contributor/earner team. so that experienced employee will work on regular basis with full team effort.

PARTNERS

idea posted by Krunal Kothari BDO, GLOBAL EXIM

Make them the companies partners. If the number of employees are less than 25 then, we can make them partners of the companies for 10% (or a figure agreed to all ) between the group. Then let the money accumulate & at the end of the year, they should be given BONUS + the PROFIT amount.

Create a Company Culture

idea posted by Priyanka Gupta HR Consultant

A very pertinent topic for several reasons. One reason is that startups and entrepreneurial ventures are on the rise in India as well as in other parts of the world.

I agree with the points brought up such as maintaining transparency, hiring right etc.

I want to add that to create cohesive teams and a team environment it is important that the founders and top management of the startup define the company culture and put in some plugpoints. While culture is a 'soft' issue - in many ways building a certain type of company environment would require same approach as defining the company vision, mision and goals etc.
