Practice, practice, practice

Learning a word won't help very much if you promptly forget it. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary. It helps to write the word., both the definition and a sentence you make up using the word, perhaps on an index card that can later be reviewed. As soon as you learn a new word, start using it. Review your index cards periodically to see if you have forgotten any of your new words. Also search websites to get many examples of how the word is actually used.

Always read

Being in teaching profession i see students from every category and most of them don't have a good vocabulary skills, they at times get stranded for words while they are communicating. So to me, most of the vocabulary words are learned from the context. The more number of words one is exposed to, the better vocabulary they will have., so while you are reading anything for that matter like a newspaper or a magazine or even a journal, paying close attention to those words that you don't know always helps. The primary thing is to figure out their meanings from context. According to me one should always read and listen to challenging material so that you'll be exposed to many new words, and one will build on his vocabulary skills as such by doing this.

This will really help one to build really good vocabulary skills, this is very easy you don't have to read anything, you just have to play, and everybody enjoys playing, i mean playing scrabble, boggle, and crossword puzzles. These and other word games are available for the computer, where you are not dependent on a partner to play. Also, try out the Franklin Electronic Dictionary which features built-in word games. where you yourself be applying thoughts and will not rely on any body for answers. All these will help you in a very good manner to build your vocabulary skills....
