How we build our homes, both in design and choice of materials, is one of the most significant ways that we can affect our future and then much of the concern comes down to the use of energy. How much energy is used in the building materials themselves like in their transportation and assembling. Then once the house is built, how much energy does it consume to keep its inhabitants comfortable in the house, the  consumption of energy has a direct influence on environment, because of the inherent pollution through greenhouse gasses and other forms of emission, So how will you build green homes?? so pour in your thoughts here!!

Use of local materials

idea posted by Anjali Bhatia Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

I feel in almost all localities, nature has provided us with some wonderful materials to build with. Because these materials require little processing or transporting, the environmental and economic costs are low. Some are renewable resources like trees and straw, and some may be so abundant that their supply seems almost inexhaustible like rocks and sand. One of the beauties of building with local materials is that they seem to fit well with the feeling of the place, naturally.

It should also be kept in mind that the materials should be eco friendly as well

Use of best material from local market is good idea. It saves time so it is economically good.

I agree to Anjali Bhatia use of of local material will will make it more ecofriendly.

Lighting

idea posted by Venkatesh M Warehouse Manager, Larsen and Toubro
One should design in such a way that the building gets maximum day lighting & overall lighting power density can be designed as less as 1.0 W/sq.ft. Use daylight-cum-dimmer controls & select energy efficient luminaires like CFL, T-5, LED, etc....
7
0

In addition to above one should also go for solar energy & other non conventional eco friendly energy sources and other similar ideas.

0

You can also install a small windmill, which not only reduce your dependence on the normal electricity but also reduced your carbon footprints. Windmills might be a better idea as compared to the solar panels. Solar panels not only have a high investment but also the maintenance cost is quite high. Contact us to help you to understand the concept and how you can use windmills for your electricity requirements.

Avoid destroying greenery

idea posted by rakeshbhatnagar GM Projects., wig brothers india pvt.ltd.

DON'T cut trees and don't destroy greenery. House must be built up which are weather proof well ventilated. conservation of water should be arranged.Solar energy must be utalised for lighting and cooking.Conserve available greenery and thy to develop green belt in sorrounding area. This is the best way I could think of for a green house.Building should be well ventilated & should be able to get maximum day light ,it may coserve energy and help in reducing energy requirment .It may be a service to nation.

Well,It is fine if it is possible to build the nation without cutting the trees. But to built the infrastructure required to meet the needs of vast increasing population it is unavoidable to cut the trees though we speak in Volumes. Only the alternative is to plant 10 to 20 new plants against the tree cut .Let us not cut it ruthlessly ,then it will cut our lives.

Not only that, Trees and greenery adds beauty and fantastic background. If properly maintained and a house is constructed whose colours are matching the surrounding trees and plants with beautiful planning of water supply as most of the people do in Europe, the overall construction will look like a Fairy Tale home. Everyone will love to visit there. Just a little bit of creativity is needed...:)

2

Only  avoiding tree cutting will not be enough to meet the true need of the hour , we should also move forward to use the waste materials in a big way for the different uses .We the civil engineers and the persons related with the construction industry are to come forward to use and dispose the solid waste by turning waste in to gold and yes we can do it, we need to give a serious thought for the welfare of society and our own.

Thanks

living with nature is an everlasting solution to all problems, created by us by unmindful exploitation of natural resources and adopting artificial modes for a so called comfortable living. DONT FORGET, HUMAN AND THAT CASE, ALL LIVING BEINGS ARE THE PRODUCT OF NATURE AND THEIR SURVIVAL is based in nature itself.

0

What I understand from green home is where the home uses minimum artificial energy and maximum natural energy,we guys sometimes get carried away by aesthetics/looks show off...n so on. But if we stop thinking for a minute and go back to history and try to use traditional building materials like...lime n mud, instead of clay bricks, thacthed roof/sloped roof of pre-coated corrugated sheets instead of concrete roof, use of wood(imported from africa/malayasia n other countries), and as rightly stated in "Think Small" design a house as much as required and not to show of luxury, we can create a new perspective for others to look..what is meant by green home.

But it is essential at the same time to do some research and development in our traditional methods of construction to achieve optimum strength and durability for the structure, achieving aesthics is individuals capability.

Laury Baker is the famous example for creating green homes and achieving aesthical appreciation for his buildings.

1

For construction not to cut trees always desirable but in practical life sometimes it is unavoidable,so it is compulsory that whenever we wil cut one tree we must plat three trees in the ratio 1:3,nowadays another problem which we are facing that is gradual lowering of water table prticularly in city,so for construction one has to keep in mind and proper planning so that all the rain water collected by rain water pipe should reach and add the ground water table also I feel all these activities should reach to common people and they should be given training then only these green revoulution wil be sucessful.

Leave space around each dwelling to plant &care for 2 trees /family

idea posted by Charles davison Project Manager, Douglas OHI LLC

We all understand that to build green Homes we have to invariably use technologies and materials that directly or indirectly affect the environment. In the name of comfort,Tecnology and science seem to be doing more harm to nature thereby to ourselves and our successive generation than make this world a better place to live healthy and peacefully.

We have debated in these communities on which materials can be green, what procedures are green, and how certification can make you green!

I feel practically, all of us will and already used materials like wood for furnitures in a major way and for windows and doors etc to a certain extent. Also we use other materials whose process are not making the world any greener

So what you and me definitely can value add is to

  1. Allow space around your houses(if individual houses) to grow at least 2 trees in your lifetime
  2. If in flats ,plant trees in the garden space allowed/ask (educate) the developer to leave sufficient space to plant trees(not lawn)/select flats where sufficient greenery is prioritized
  3. If both the above are not practical,Plant and care for trees on road sude/park/or nearby reserve forest area/zoos/sanctuaries.
  4. Make the above idea part of daily life

Caring for a tree outside your place is not a impossible thing. If we take the garbage to throw in the bin some distance away from home ,we can also water aplant/tree in the same way.

Hoping,Perhaps our progeny also will do the same.

Yes Mr Bansal,Town planners need to play an important role.As you mentioned DDA ,even DDA has a responsibility which of course it might have failed to do so.

I do understand your predicament.i have suggested some ways to put our efforts ,leave the first point and look at the other possibilities which i had in mind.with a little effort at the end of the day you will be satisfied that u have done your best .

My point was if 30 % of the people put in an effort ,then We would have achieved the other 70 % by the way of initiative.

I have practiced it. here in the gulf also we plant some greenery in deserts where we stay and try to encourage the labour force on the same .who knows, they might do something when they are back home.

Thank you for the concern and  constructive comments

cheers

Dear Mr. Charles, I really appreciate your comment that society means US or WE  but at the same time WE means I and U . Now I am residing in a DDA colony at New Delhi at IIIrd floor and want to support U and ur idea , please let me know how ? I have already placed quite a few potted plants in my house.

On the other side if the developer is a Pvt. player he will try to commercialize the space to get maximum profit , for instance he will prefer to have Swimming Pool , Large parking lots and wider roads to attract the customers. Will it add to the requirement of the Green Home . So awareness , law enforcement and the commitment of the town planners is urgent and immediate need of the hour. I think it should be quoted as contribution of the town planners is the utmost requirement.

Yes Sushil, The price is exhorbitant for space,i agree.Thats the second point in idea - we have to ensure that we ourselves take the initiative to select the developer who has provided ehough space for trees and also propogate the idea so that more and more people will opt for such developers .This will eventually create more developers who give such priority (out of understanding or compulsion/or to be in competitive business). The end result is that we would have contributed our littte towards green.

Moreover I do feel that colony/society is 'US'.we constitute the society so again the onus is on us.

My idea was that we have to initiate the process.we cannot expect others/Govt /Corporations to do it.

Either way you have in your opinion put in the same idea but differently.

Thinking small

idea posted by Srinath Srinivasan Construction-Heavy, DLF
This is plain simple,  building huge homes just for two or more where more than 20 ppl can live is not common sense, just think the material that goes into the building of these houses and the amount of energy that these big house uses, this energy usually comes from the combustion of fossil fuels, depleting these resources and emitting greenhouse gases and pollutants into the air, A home should be just the right size for its occupants and their activities, The key to this is efficient use of space, good organization, and keeping possessions to a manageable level.

it is perfect idea , But the fact is as we know Developed countries have less than 10% population of the world where as consumes  nearly 90% of the world natural resources, where as 90% of the population of the population of world falls in developing nations and consumes only 10% of the resources. we always find that less is more for few and more is less for most. It is human pshycology it comes by birth.Every time  we build home , it is to prove in society that what we are worth of.Until we stop respecting such people and start condeming them this canot be stoped. If U do that , people around U will say since U couldn't achieve that,UR pulling the leg of the person. What We need is responsible scoeity , Building are just  the reflection of the civilization of the particular period and Time. They are the out come of Money,Power and Politics and Technology

This basic need to conserve water is the real need of the hour to fight the water problem . It may not be possible to introduce this in an individual house but it can be introduced for societies and colonies . This on one side will made water available for  plantation and on other will reduce load on Supply and drainage system .

Having HVAC by natural means

idea posted by Mallaya Pandravada GM-Project , GSSInfraTech Pvt Ltd

The Four reurements Heat, Ventilation and Air conditioning need more power and fossil fuel.

Keeping the home warm by using flooring by wooden tiles  can lessen the use of fossil fule to keep the heating energy for the home minimum.

Ventilation by Proper Orientation of the the house : Facilitates the natural light and air circulate inside the house will lessen the artificial ventilation requirement of the  rooms .

Lessening the requirement of Air Conditioning by provision of cavity walls Finned windows.Cavity wall lessen the solar radiation and conduction of heat into the homes. Finned windows make the air passing into the home cooler by the venturi effect.

By innovating the buiding design, these three main requiremnets will be met with by harnessing natural resources and provide solution for greener homes. These measures ensures reduction of electricity for heating and lighting; And also reduces emittance of the chloro fluro carbons (used widely air conditioning equipment).

1

Mr. Mallaya 's idea is one of the basic requirements of green house.

Now a days we are spending a lot of energy and finance for artificial  HVAC , if we look backward and observe the old buildings when HVAC installations were not there. we will notice that the floor height of buildings was much more , now the floor height has reduced much on account of initial cost.If the floor heights are more than there will be natural ventilation. Open able, louvered, finned Ventilators near ceiling level is definitely a better and natural way of Ventilation. As per law of Gases hot gases are lighter and move upwards which goes out through ventilators near ceiling and make room for further fresh air. In present Modern Houses with low floor heights and no Ventilator the gases / leftover breath doesn't find way out and create an envelope of hot air above which creates an unhealthy environment in your home/room itself.

I feel Mallaya is right. infact we should not encourage AC as it makes small area cool by giving out lot of heat in the process directly and indirectly

We need to build homes which will keep the inside at a constant temperature at all climates....laurie baker style

it may not look good in present scenario but you wuold have contributed your mite in your life time for global cooling

Energy efficient walls

idea posted by Abhik Datta Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers
I feel the first and the foremost planning involves designing the building as per the general seasonal variations and the location and movement of sun. Thus providing windows and sunshades in such a manner that ther is minimum sunlight falling during peak times on walls and windows during summers and the maximum sunshine entering and falling on walls during winters. It also involves modifications in the ways the normal 9" brickwork is done creating internal hollow interconnected spaces. These space can now be filled with inorganic fireproof insulation materials. One can also use these hollow interconnected spaces in walls to circulate air so as to either remove heat from walls or add heat during winters. Simple concepts which reduce the air-conditioning loads during summers to reducing heating loads during winters. It involves using insulated cementious plasters rather than the normal wall plasters on outer walls facing the sun thus turning normal walls into insulated walls at a very nominal increase in initial cost.....

No doubt that, the landscape of the house determined to be constructed needs to be green (mean to say with grass, trees , unspoilt environ). Over and above, equipment used can be reduced as much as possible so that, energy consumption and CO2 production is reduced. Also, energy used for various activity can be solar / bio-gas from wastes. For example, direct sunlight can be planned to be there for a maximum period of the day, solar activated pumps / motors / heaters can best be used. Bio-gas that can be produced from food/vegetable wastes etc for cooking etc be planned. Use non-burnt bricks / cut-rocks etc for wall. There are electrical, plumbing material thats are marked as Go-green that help reduce consumption of power. We can use recycled materials for the construction .Non structural members of the buildings i.e. members not subjected to forces can be constructed by using recycled materials. Use of recycled materials will help to save the most valuable land for other multiple uses. As lot of solid waste acquiring  most valuable space can be put to a great use by mixing with binding materials etc. which will be a cheapest and value adding  disposal of the solid waste saving lot of funds and land. Will this not be a real environment friendly and increasing the green.

Also, prefabricated homes can be made using local materials by giant 3d printing approaches like contour crafting, though this idea is still experimental. Design of prefab green home will include all measures for efficiency like maximum use of natural heating and ventilation, green roof and walls using vertical gardens, integrated solar water heating and solar cells, possibly vertical axis wind turbines, waste water management and rain water harvesting, use of LED lamps for night.
