On the world Autism day, today lets take some time out to understand what Autism is really about, many think that Autistic people are mentally retarded, but they are not and some autistic child are very talented and are good at something, though the ratio is low, but the number of autistic children are increasing in a recent radio show with Dr. Nirupama Rao who says that 1 in 100 children are said to be autistic and considering the population in India that is a very high number and with the rate of illiteracy many of these autistic people are branded as mentally retarded and then sent them to the mental hospital to get treated when there is nothing wrong with them.

And with the recent movie on the same lines donned by Shahrukh khan in My name is khan has atleast brought this into the notice of people, though handling people with autism a bit difficult task and might pose problems, but if we know how to handle them then it becomes all the more easy for them to lead a proper life. So, in this regard I would like to ask you all how to create awareness about Autism? Please share your views on this.

Chain mails

idea posted by Sarika Singh Assistant Professor, BIT

We can ask our friends and family if we can put them on one of the many mailing lists from these charitable organizations. Then have them ask their friends, and so on. Stick to personal contacts so that our message will not be categorized as spam if we choose to email these individuals.

Thanks for the referral, Ms Sarika

Camps/meetings can be held, I think the initiative can be taken by Hospitals and people in Health Care.

autism is not a visble disability, like polio etc.. so the task becomes more difficult. beyond diagnosis and support in early years, hospitals wud hv little role to play.

we need a development model for autism or disability per se.. where he/she is seen a part of society. physical and social infrastrcture needs 2 b  created to accomodate all of them. awareness  sensitivity on the issue can help.

Record progress in both "Child development stages" and "Immunization" Chart

idea posted by Krishna Software Testing, Ness Technology

I think, most of the cases parents do not identify the problem at the early stage or even if they identify they hope that everything will be all right in due course. And it is mostly because of lack of knowledge and awareness. I believe the earlier it is detected chances are more to be get cured.
Govt has major role to play here. Like Immunization awareness, awareness on "Child development Stages" should be spread and Television/Newspaper are the best medium for that. Hospitals/Paediatrician should follow and mark a progress both in "Immunization" Chart as well as "Child development stages" chart.

When I say "Child development stages" chart, a reference can be found at

Fund raising

idea posted by Dhirendra Bengeri Project Manager, Tech Mahindra

Fund raising is a simple way to accomplish both goals you are trying to achieve. You will raise awareness as well as raise funds. You can sell awareness ribbons, jewelry, clothing, coffee mugs, car magnets etc. Every cause has a ribbon color and autism has its very own puzzle piece ribbon.

Watch Your Language

idea posted by Dhirendra Bengeri Project Manager, Tech Mahindra

It makes a difference how you talk about autism.Don't treat Autism as a disorder or disease while you speak to other people. Listen to how you hear other people speak about autism, and to what you yourself are saying.

Consider Yourself

idea posted by Dhirendra Bengeri Project Manager, Tech Mahindra

Before you say anything about it, consider yourself in the position of the child. How people may talk to you, how people may react towards you.
