A customer walks by your store and he has only few seconds to decide if he can find what he wants inside the store. Having an effective and attractive Visual signage will attract the customer to the store and ineffective and poor quality visual signage may not attract customers because your are not able to convey your message to your customers clearly. Which in turn will reduce the customers foot traffic and thereby reduce profits.

So to attract the customers to your retail store and convey the correct message, you need to have an effective Visual signage that conveys correct message about price, promotion, name of the store, product information etc...

How will you create such an effective Signage ?

Keeping the message simple and clear

idea posted by Vijay Sharma Logistics Manager, Reliance retail

I feel wen you write a message make it simple and clear. Make sure that you convey your message in fewer words as possible.Keep it about 1 to 5 words.

Make sure you dont convey the message about the sale, price and product all at once, try a sale sign on the top of the rack, price and product info on the tag, and return policy at the cash register.

Color : helps set mood and feeling

idea posted by Sudhansu Jena Logistics Manager, Target

I think that color helps create mood and feeling, So the signage color should be simple and the store should follow the same color scheme in the entire store and they shouldn't go crazy with the color.

Using a quality paper printer and paper will help and also keep in mind that the background color, text color should have enough contrast to be easily read.

Easy to Read

According to me one should make their signage easy to read, as i am talking in the customers viewpoint. Don't try to put too much on one sign. Some signs are so full of tiny images, starbursts, exclamation marks, and small print, that one can't take it all in. One main image, a headline and a few bullet points are all you need on an sign.

Plan Emotions

idea posted by Vijay Bhaskar COO, Divami Software Private Limited

It is a known fact that the whole demand and supply market is based on the need and emotions. Each one of us, by nature have certain properties and behavior and that is the reason why certain industries like food, cosmetics, electronics thrive more than other business.

To create an effective signage, one needs to look at the following:

  1. Pattern - in the common symbols and its meaning/understanding
  2. Data - of past history in the store, typical customer arrival, departure, path taken etc
  3. Brand Push - in many cases the product companies would have sold their product via ads, etc. Use them as cognizable factors in attracting customers
  4. Forced Path - in many organized stores, there are rows or shelves dedicated to a certain type of products and in many cases, the path taken to reach the designated areas are cleverly lined with related or depending on the product a supportive product (hair brushes on the way to cosmetics row etc).

A good signage would be a combination of all the above. Colors, clear text etc are the end means to achieve this. Unless the thought has not gone into its final intent, a loud logo or text would just not work.

Hope this helps.
