The Indian economy is growing fastly and every one is concerned about the urban design and development. The cities are searching ways to go sustainable, so we need to design an efficient man-made environment, while addressing the needs of nature and people at the same time. How to create sustainable cities?

Mandating the standards and incentives

idea posted by Anjali Sinha Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

According to me, we should think of how to make our planet more sustainable, which in turn would make our cities more sustainable. I feel that the federal standards and incentives should be mandated, which would include the elimination of the incandescent light bulb, more incentives to creates green businesses, standards for products being sold, and a commitment from the top to make businesses more sustainable. We should provide opportunities to the small and medium businesses to establish in cities. Employers tend to hire people who live in the cities, which makes the cities more viable.

We should think at the energy consumption levels so as to forsee the future. Energy consumption to be minimised. Alternate energy like Solar to be made mandatory and also give subsidies to individuals ar organizations who opt for these alternative/renewable energies

Implanting water treatment plants so as to supply the growing demand for clean and potable water

encouraging individuals to go for green constructions and terrace gardening

Traditional and Environment friendly constructions

idea posted by Somasundaran Chakkambath Finance/Budgeting Manager, Gulf Engineering Co. KSCC - Kuwait

Though majority of Indians are living in villages,  City-dwellers are increasing day by day due to increasing number of employment opportunities available in cities.  According to me, our cities are presently getting more and overcrowded and localised and  at the  same time not expanding in the right way.  We are not following traditional and environment friendly methods in constructions.  Our objectives should be to improve living condtions in general (in villages as well ) and introduce environment friendly constructions and infrastructure developments and reduce the gap between living conditions of rich and the poor as far as possible.

Few points I would like to add on this line of thinking. Encouraging to construct  high rise buildings is not desirable from safety point of viiew,    however, it is unavoidable within city limits, especially for commercial usage.

I think minimising land usage is not critical, rather more effective usage of existing land for agricultural or commerciall purposes is more important.  Another thing, Joint Family systems will work only to limited extent, since outlook of people have undergone tremendous changes with passage of time.  Therefore,   at least  let us try to adapt our construction methods (similar to our age old 'Vastu' calculations etc.)    to our beloved environment with lots of greeneries around. We should not fill our planet with  plenty of 'concrete jungles'. It is also advisable to remember about depleting drinking water sources in many areas.  Global warming is a major calamity scaring us.

By imprving our constructon methords like constructing high tower in place of seprate houses or bunglows lot of good lands can prevented, we also have to promote joint family programs because if every one start settle seprately then consumption of land my increase. even if we promote growing plant near houses, streets, rail tracks makes our city sustainable.

Simple Mathematics : Addition and Subtraction

idea posted by Saleel Deshpande Sr.Architectural Co-ordinator, Dar Al-Handasah(Shair and Partners)

Use simple mathematics as follows :

  • Subtract all useless and lazy politicians from power.
  • Add intellegent young, enthusiatic, smart individuals in power through political process.
  • Subtract:(demolish) all buildings/structures which utilize energy more than required.
  • Add New building permits to those whose buildings are in building permit stage, and promote renovation of existing buildings in an energy efficient manner(provide some score which can be encashed in some or other way)
  • Subtract :careless/useless government employees who are incharge of building permission and municipal corporation.
  • Add: smart intellegent government employees(if required Government shud recruit more )
  • Subtract :The idealogy of individuals like (who cares, its not my responsibility..etc)
  • Add : I will do it, we have to do it, its our responsibility.
  • Subtract all byelaws/guidelines which are not clear to understand or which can be used aas a loop hole to the guidelines.
  • Add : clear directives and guidelines.
  • Subtract : Thinking that this(creation of sustainable cities) is not achievable.
  • Add : Think in a right direction how can this(creation of sustainable cities) be achieved.

Saleel, very well said, but can we see it practical, I really wish if it would be.

Go for alternative energy

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

Today we find that our energy resources are going down day-by-day and people in cities are the sufferers. So we should look for some other alternative energy to survive and sustain. The cities should adopt renewable energies as the alternative. There are many renewable energy like solar, wind and hydro etc. This will help the cities to develop and also to sustain.

Yes Not only energy also water and environment. In this context i feel our beurocrats of minisirial structure and Planning commission have to shed their conservatism and start out of the box thinking. I do not understand why each state and their cities are spending  all the money JNRUM  on reactive proposals only without having  any proactive sustainable schemes??/. I came to know out of 4800 odds propsal only 4 proppsals are for water source improvement or acquifier related.

As we all know everything is part of our attitude, behavior and habits. The way we think, will become our acts and our acts make our character hence the above all three option are just a small part of the attitude is everything always and together we can change the wrong practices.

Depoliticise and Change Cities' & Municipality administration Rules

idea posted by Prashanta Bhaumik Head/VP/GM-Tech. Support, ASPIRTEK Technology Ltd

Each city or municipality have very innovative and intelligent community or persons. They need to be included in development of a city or municipality. AGe old rules and and regulations sponsored by Politicians trying to capture Gaddi and AIded by amenable bureacrats degenreats human socity and the community. Rucbhik's case  in Haryana and a village in  same Haryana where each village road is paved and and cleaning and are supervised by villagers. So clean is the village Urban people are approaching to by plot in village. are classic example. My beurocrats upbringing has to be stopped from plotician's clutches.

Similar to those used by star hotels and golf carts with in the modern complexes to reduce usage of private vehicles for shopping, pick up and drop to and from schools. Visit to hospitals, multi plexes should be free for owners/residents. The cost can be built in the maintenance funds......

One can also explore for energy saving devices / resorces for use.

idea posted by malladi madhukumar AGM -MKTG, Andhra Cements Ltd

Day by Day population is increasing in urban areas. Population increase is overtaking amenities at faster speed.

Big villages near the cities, setellite towns, 2 tire cities,3 tier cities/towns should be accored infastructure facilitieslike rail , road connectivities, and drainage, water, electricity, sanitation so that it helps in sustainability of existing cities and development of urban areas which helps in generating employment..
