Butterfly Effect  refers to the idea that the fluttering of a butterfly’s wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately result in the occurrence of a tornado in a certain faraway location. The flapping wing represents a small change in the initial condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large-scale alterations of events.

The same is in organizations. As the war for talent heats up in the Indian market, many corporate leaders tend to think that it takes complicated performance evaluation systems and steep salary hikes to motivate and retain their employees in the system. But that is not correct way always....

So, how to create the 'Butterfly Affect'??

Create the feeling of importance

idea posted by Kriti Das HR Manager, ANZ Information Technology

An employee would stay productive only if he is made aware of how he is important to the system. Interestingly, this does not require any great efforts, but simple and small gestures.

In fact, gentle nods of approval could boost morale levels and constant appreciations could help reducing employee attrition to an extent that could never be achieved through complex appraisal systems.

I think Kirti you are right in your observation actually it takes care of all the other heads mentioned. Money is not every thing but if some body is taken care of by makig him/her feel important for the organisation most of the actual top line managers will not part company.

Yes, I agree.

Appreciate everyone's contribution. Don't just reward the seniors for the work. It is because of lots of effort put by lower level employees a work gets done. Hence reward them too so that they feel good. This is one way to make them feel important.

Encourage Creativity

Good one Kriti, creating a butterfly effect is simple but nobody gives much importance to it. I believe that it can create miracles... Have fun with your employees. Organize events frequently that challenges employees at their creative level. This will help employee to develop more & contribute more to the organization.

Make them feel as part of the organisation.

Employee can asked to give suggestions about solving problems facing by their department. Give some freedom to take decisions.

Consider the solutions if it is feasible, with this employee will directly participate in solving problems and will feel as part of organisation.

and after this appreciate his/her efforts by giving formal or informal recognition.

As long as an employee feels he/she belongs to the organisation, and that the organisation values their inputs and efforts, the temptation of a higher remuneration will be resisted. In today's world, every employee knows that if they stick to one organisation, and that the organisation will reward their loyalty, no one will look for better prospects.

Give Employees Some Breathing Space

idea posted by Farhad Khurshed Founder, Copywriting-Results

Give employees some breathing space. Bosses, don't keep looking over their shoulder to see what they are doing. Give employees access to Facebook. As long as they deliver, what's the problem?

Never, never forget that employees are human beings, not machines. Meaning their emotional state affects their work. A problem at home could affect productivity. If they have to take time off for some reason, don't make them feel uncomfortable and pressured. Be gentle and supportive.

Make their work challenging and listen to the ideas that employees suggest with an open mind. A bored or unappreciated employee will underperform or leave.

Just like anything else in life, what goes around comes around. So treat employees like human beings, find out what's important to them and what will get them to align their personal values to the organisation's vision. Do this and you'll have a lot of happy butterflies.

Monthly awards / incentives

A programe highlighting the best performer on monthly basis ( Say Best Employee of the month / Best performer for the quarter) will, to certain extend, create a butterfly effect.

In psychological test, a mouse is enticed by giving a bait as and when it touchs the gate (accepting a positive notation). In similar vein this awards will give a positive culture in the peer group, emanating a butterfly effect.
