Most people if not all had experienced being criticized. May it be in the workplace, in your own neighborhood or even with your own family. Everybody has something to say. Everyone has their own opinion about another  person's life. The more juicy the story, the more exciting it becomes.

It is especially difficult if you are the target of a criticism. May it be true or false, people tend to talk about the part of your life that you want hidden to the world. This is especially true when confronted with criticism in your workplace.
So, how to deal with it??

Examine yourself

idea posted by Dipika Das Associate/Sr. Associate -(NonTechnical), ABC Consultants Private Limited

In a perfect world, it is much nicer and better if your colleagues would tell you how good you are at work. How happy it would make you feel if they all praise you with a job well done. However, this is not always the case. People would often make you feel worthless and down. They would sometimes criticize and attack your performance, just because they can.

This is the time for you to look at the brighter picture. Instead of feeling hurt and miserable, look at it as a chance to prove your worth. A chance to prove them wrong.

It is correct and +ve  approach( though easier said). Yet this puritanic approach leads to lot of frustration because we expect the other's appreciation. The ideal solution will/shall be a blend of all the above said factors.

I agree with both of you Dipika Das & Mohana. Be open to criticism & examine yourself. After self-examination if you feel the criticsm is correcttly pointed on you, then think it is as right oppurtunity to improve yourself & thank the person who has criticised you & making a chance to improve yourself. But if you feel that criticism is not correct, then revert back to him/her with some good points to show him/her that he/she is wrong.

Add your argument:

Be open to criticism.

Embrace feedback not as an attack but a way to improve yourself.

I will love to tell the gospel truth.Initially we all feel a bit awkward and resist the criticism. But when we are alone and peep inside,we get the answer and it is we have to embrace the views of others.

You are not different when you reach your work place-you can't create another personality to absorb criticism.Try to be open-see if something is to be done-If it's a neurotic commend act deaf & dump or ask the criticiser to explain a solution / suggestion-all this depends on where we stand and our reaction to the situation.Never mind the commends if you are confident of your action.Actually people who don't criticise other's are very good in dealing with such situations.Somewhere inbetween lies the answer.Regards.ashok

Yes You are right. It is human nature that if he/she listen criticism about him/her first they try to oppose it because all people has its own view, sometimes you are right and sometimes wrong. first analyze you if you feel you are right then ignore the persons view and if you think you are wrong and then try to correct or improve yoursself but never bow down to others..

Be stubborn on your ideas and never bow down to your fellow employees. They criticise us in order to bring us down on our confidence.

I think one should examine himself whenever he faces woekplace criticism. There would be something which is cause of it. So one should understand that cause and try to remove it form himself. If you can examine your actions without any bias no one can criticise you.

Good one Dipika. When confronted with a situation, do not let your feelings get the best of you. Ask about the story first. Knowing the whole story lets you focus more on the issue rather than the personality of the person criticizing you.

After assessing the story, if you think you are at fault, don't hesitate to apologize for your wrong action.
