Dear friends,

Manufacturing companies face this problem every now & then. We also started a recycling program at our unit. I would like to know on how to encourage recycling at manufacturing plant such that every stakeholder participates & companies are able to save money & time. After a while it should become a habit for everyone.....

Please advice on this critical aspect !!!

Reward People !!!

idea posted by Isha Verma Sales/BD Manager, Larsen & Toubro

We have been monitoring & rewarding people who were following the recycling program properly. We have motivated our staff, employees, supervisors and managers to do the work necessary to facilitate a recycling program. This has given our employees a reason to start recycling.....

I feel rewarding people for it is an excellent idea.

Thanks everyone for their valuable comments....

We need to have a systematic process in place for reinforcing habit & definitely we should know in prior on what are those to recycle.......
However, I created this Idea Contest because the task of maximizing the usage of recycling is difficult as product manufacturing processes may involve many possible alternatives for components, and for processes that may be used to assemble the components. I always believe recycling generally lowers the raw material requirements for the recycled materials. It can also be used as a means of generating energy from the waste and many recycled items have secondary uses also......

Isha ji,

U have taken one of the most relevant & practical problem,.

There may not be any single strategy for increasing recycling, but multiple measures adopted at the same time. The measures that may be adopted for "promoting recycling" may be as follows :

1. Visual signs, instructions, banners displayed at all important places at plant.

2.Strict monitoring of use of Printers/Xerox machines. Deploy shredding machines.

3.Develop sources of stationary made from recycled material.

4.Develop innovative recycling process (e.g. coolant, cutting oit filtration & reuse...).

5. Strict monitoring of scrap segregation & disposal.

6.Implement a system of "Purchase Requisition" for any material be subject to certification from materials store, that alternate material is not available in scrap yard (or non-moving inventory).

These are some of the practical measures (applicable to Industry).

We need to start from the base! Educcate and make sure that the reasons for recycling are always visible! Constant hammering will always remind people and will keep awareness going!!

It is like what FPAI (Family Planning Association of India) had done decades ago. Painted walls, posters, cinema slides, newspapers.... Just hammer it through. I am sure with more literate people the awakening would be a lot better than what it was earlier. It is a very unified effort!

Yes Markand you are right here, we need to educate people to reuse and recycle things so that it will benefit more to the planet and then themselves, so nice topic Isha.........

Recycling is stupid thinking

Sorry for hard words.

We are in era of Six Sigma and Lean. Here rework, recycle has no place. If someone is thinking of recycling instead of POKE YOKE, first time right, controlling defect etc. then he is digging grave for the organisation.

Example :- Use blank side of paper as rough paper. This creates problem of confidentiality many times. Instead while printing and taking Xerox use both side.

Hi Isha, Right and good point. Lean process and Six sigma are done and implemented , well well , but here is the case , which is a fact that ' Something neeeds to be recycled.' Minimum i understand it so from Ms. Isha's word thats the reason she wants to involve 'every stakeholder'.

Well not a bad idea at all, a Professor in Kiel has developed a working model made with PAPER!! it is going to be used and sold to govt especially in India and Africa , with a keyword to sell -> 'Slums'. It would cost around 2 NANO cars. which can provide a place for 10 people with 8 sq.m for each. So much said well , what now about recycling the metals.

So above i feel anything can be recycled, everything may not be biodegradable.

1. Select materials for product designs earlier itself that they can be recycled.

I feel if we know what is being thought to be recycled , it can definitely be helpful to talk or say further.

People should be educated about the benefis of recycling. Waste collection and Recycling is an organised sector in US and Europe. Most of the waste generated in developed countries goes to Asia and other developing countries. However, Indian Government has started a wing in minstry of Energy for Renewable Energy. People should take advantage of the provisions given and recycle as much as possible to generate wealth out of waste. We should save earth along with generation of wealth.

QUALITY CIRCLES AND MISC

idea posted by prabhakar anvekar consultant krishna consultancy

programes which lead to definet results are essential. They can be in the form of 'QUALITY CIRCLES', GIVING TARGETS TO ALL SECTIONS OF THE HUMAN RESOURCE WITH A TAG OF REMUNERATION AS A PERCENTAGE OF THE CASH OUTFLOW, BRAINSTORMING SESSIONS CONDUCTED BY THE HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENTS AS IT IS EXPECTED SUCH THINGS FROM THEM. LEAVING ONLY TO THE PRODUCTION PERSONNEL RESULTS WILL BE AT A LOWER RATE. ORGANISING PERSONNEL SHOULD BE ASSISTED BY ALL OTHERS.

First of all I wish to submit that the decision to select the rigth steps for implementation of recycling process, depends on the type and size of the company. For example a very small organisation may prefer to sell the waste products to Kabadiwala becuase the recyclic products do not have any use for him at the same time the processing cost is high.

I strongly support that recycling for harmful by-products is essential so that it can be converted into non harmful wastes/products.

Reawarding employees is good idea, but I think that it should be done through Quality Circles. I strongly believe that employees are having better practical knowledge related with their job/area. I had seen in TATA MOTORS and USHA MARTIN that with the help of ideas came out during the brain storming sessions in Quality Circles' meeting, big problems related with shop floor have been solved. During these meeting good suggestions are coming out which are even not identified by the management/ experts in planning stage. Rewarding to the best Quality Circle within the company is necessary in any organisations for motivation. Such type of motivation increases participation of the members not only in the Quality Circle meeting  but also increases the involvement of the employees in the implemetation work.

I have seen that apart from rewarding the members, the chairman of one reputed company had a dinner with the best performer quality circle group. Due to positive  and effective mangement policies, this group is having a very high growth rate with satisfied employees.
