Time and again HR experts worldwide have pointed out the problems of falling in the stagnant job. Many have also claimed that this is nothing but the end of an active career life and has both internal and external causes. But this is not true. There are many ways of successfully getting out of a job or career that is not taking you anywhere.

It’s not uncommon for a professional to slowly realize that one’s career is not moving in the direction one had wanted to. There is an illusion that there is stability, but even if that word is replaced by ‘stagnation’, not much would have changed.

So, what are ways one can get out of the career rut & still pursue his/her dreams??

Evaluate and Benchmark

idea posted by Darshana Sawant HR Manager, Leading IT services company

Every career, at all stages of its life cycle, requires introspection and evaluation against set goals. Following a strict regimen of evaluating your career progress against individually-set goals is a must and should be done every quarter. It allows you not only to do course correction, but also helps you realize the deviation from the path.

Darshana, following the 'strict regimen' of setting goals and evaluating them every quarter is easier said than done. Most, including me, know that this should be done but do we do it actually? To get out of a career rut one has to be realistic. If jobs are scarce, then one has to adjust to what one has. If there are other opportunities one can try for them. If there are alternate careers possible, one can take the risk of getting out and starting again.

Re-invent yourself

idea posted by K. NARAYAN None, None

One way is to re-invent yourself , by learning new skills , if required.

Consider how people in the entertainment industry keep reinventing themselves , to give a fresh lease of life to their careers. One example is Madonna.

Venkatraghavan , after a successful career as a bowler , changed tack to become one of the most respected umpires. Others have taken up careers as broadcasters.

Basically , it comes down to having an interest in living life to the full !

Everyday and in every way society is constantly giving us new ways to look, act and be. What we thought was hip or cool is now deck. Many of us may say, "What’s the purpose to all of this and why bother?"

* Change your appearance. When was the last time you had a makeover? Try a new look or join a health club. Could a new hair style and a new wardrobe give you a fresh outlook on life?

* Take a class just for fun. Learn to speak French, paint a picture, mold a pot, or play the piano/tabala. It is never to late to learn something new.

* Find a new hobby or activity. Do you like collecting coins, knitting, reading, riding your bicycle, or tinkering with car parts? Find an activity or hobby that matches your interests.

* Make a career change. If you are bored and unsatisfied with your current job, why not discover a new opportunity?

* Find your spiritual side. Join a church, bible study, or prayer group. Volunteer for your favorite charity one day a week. Find ways to meet new friends and socialize.

Reinvent yourself and discover ways to bring new meaning and enjoy your life your way and you will find happiness and satisfaction in every small thing which happens around.

And to add to my above views – you can not sit on your Laurels and enjoy your corporate job by doing nothing new. You stop generating new ideas or achieving new Laurels for you and your organization, you start smelling rotten.

Absolutely correct.

Reinventing, Reinvesting in yourself for learning something new to cope up with the change is very important. Introspection, self analysis, benchmarking will make you aware of your real standing in global scenario. Polishing your capabilities and mitigating your drawbacks is another way to move ahead by learning or investing in yourself. If you are satisfied with what you are right now – you are dead in today’s world. You need to move on with the pace of the changing world.

My 2 cents.

Just Enjoy your Work and try to do it better !!

idea posted by Nitin Anand SAP Consultant, J P Morgan

May sound a bit philosophical but when you stop complaining and start enjoying whatever work you do, you will automatically put yourself in that extra performance mode with more challenges and more gratification.  It is also applicable to SO CALLED routine work because It will start looking different as you go with a new zeal to do it better each day and hence making it more challenging and DIFFERENT each day.

Just a thought !! :-)

Winners don't do different things, they just do things differently !

Networking

idea posted by Gargi Sinha Senior Consultant, Hewitt Associates

The paradigm shift in the way businesses are run today requires one to network. Various social and professional networking sites allow you to network and also help you look at newer opportunities, allowing you to change course.

Launch yourself, turn entrepreneur

idea posted by Navjeet Sood Business Head, ADI Media Pvt Ltd

Sure Darshana. There comes a stage in life that you feel stagnant and have this sudden and strong urge to come out of it all (rut as you call it). And by the time this feeling creeps in, one is sure to have gained enough experience & expertise in given field. Take a break, introspect, combine all your strengths, plan your finances and launch yourself as an entrepreneur. That, to me, is the best way to break from the confines of a regular job, pursue your dreams and live your life your way. If you could that for him (the company), why can't you do this for yourself??? is the question you need to be asking before taking the plunge.

Now, with the range of experience & expertise & frustration & wishes you may have, how well and for how long you hold onto the entrepreneurship model would only show how strong were your dreams.

do what you love otherwise love what you do........

idea posted by Deepti Kulkarni HR Manager, Con-Air Equipments Pvt Ltd

there is no particular solution or a remedy for this problem...its just one need to understand n change his/her outlook or attitude towards looking at life, work, hobbies, image, pride, success n other such subjective terms...

if u can do what I've mentioned above then life becomes celebration 24*7......nonetheless try to strike a balance .....if you are able to achieve the golden mean then nothing like it......otherwise no other option is left...in any case....never ever give up......be passionate about life...& it ll keep you moving in right direction.........

Be Realistic

idea posted by Nikhil Jain Senior Consultant, Hewitt Associates

Though it is not recommended to make amends in the overall goals every now and then, it is advised that one be realistic in the approach. This can be in the context of the overall economic scenario, industry benchmarks and personal capabilities. One should not set expectations which can lead to unnecessary stress at the work place. This is more dangerous than the stagnant situation itself.

Shift for oneself.

idea posted by Mohammad Bakhsh Project Leader/Managing Consultant, Freelancer

The American system of fire and hire is slowly but gradually occupying space globally. The shift in a job by one's own volition or forced upon leave both side in a state of fluidity. It takes time to attune. The Rut in the career is nothing but one 's own latent hag-ridden when taking up new assignment. In the changed scenario or situation when one is in the thinking process,"the shift for oneself" is very important.

Set the right priorities for your life

idea posted by Shyam S Project Leader/Managing Consultant, A leading EDA firm

What do you want in your life ? Would you spend all your life slogging to build a million dollar empire only to die of a heart attack ?

Would you work hard all your life in order to become the General Manager of a large organization only to discover that your decisions are of no value when it comes to affecting the lives of others ?

What really do you want to do in life ?

Is career only defined by pay package and false "designations"?

Please ask yourself those questions. Life is far more valuable to be wasted on building a so called "career" in the industry. Even a CEO in a reputed firm stands nowhere when it comes to public life : so do you want to build career as a politician or a social worker ?

As far as I am concerned, the so called "career" for me is just a source of money to buy me the necessities of life. I do not see much value in the designations, so called perks, so called "expertise" etc.

Understand that your life is not for your career, rather your career is meant to help your life. The main thing is life . Lead a life as would help you progress in both this one and the next. Do not waste time and energy in thinking about so called career.

Even Akbar, Ashoka,  Vikramaditya , Queen Victoria : so many great Emperors had to die and now hardly anybody has time to remember them.

Then why  is the "Human Resource" department of IT firms so keen to push the youngsters to seek only "career, career, career" ?

This has got no value. Career is just a means to get money and if one has money : they need not build the so called career. Better to lead a life of spirituality : peace and contentment.
