High volatility in stock markets combined with the easing inflation has again made fixed deposits an attractive avenue for investors, particularly those seeking assured returns.

So, how to get most out of your fixed deposit?

Take a look at the interest rates offered by different banks before going in for a scheme. You also need to decide the tenure of your deposit. The interest rates offered by different banks could vary. Also, the interest rates for different tenures are different.

Interests offered by banks are either calculated quarterly, half-yearly, yearly or at maturity. So, calculate which bank is going to get you the highest interest.

Suppose there are two banks -- 'A' & 'B'. Bank 'A' gives an interest rate of 10% p.a on a fixed deposit of five years and the interest is calculated on a quarterly basis.

Bank 'B' gives the same interest rate for the same period, but the interest is calculated on a yearly basis. In this case, Bank 'A' will get you more interest than Bank 'B'. The more frequently interests are calculated, the more interest you will get.

I agree with Deepa.

That is, assuming you are to invest in FD, this is the way to go about it.

If one has different RISK profile, Return expectation,Investment Knowledge or access to Knowledge, then the investment avenues are plenty!

NCD, PPF, Fully Secured NCD, Company FD, MF, MF-SIP, Bonds, Gold,Silver, Commodities, Stocks, Real Estate, Global ETFs ..... and so on!

Deepa has put it very nicely --that's the correct explanation

Deposit & Forget

For, FD schemes of banks not only give assured returns but risk-free returns as well, and all one has to do is park one’s money in such a scheme and forget about it till maturity.

The best part of FD schemes are that they are one of the safe investment avenues and there is very little chance of losing you money as banks are closely regulated and monitored by the Reserve Bank of India. In the current turbulent times, investors are increasingly banking on such age-old investment tools.

To get most out of your deposits, u can not rely on Fixed Deposits as I don't consider Fixed Deposit as an Investment strategy to get most out of your returns.

More Risk More gain Is the Best way of getting Max Returns.

today fix deposit interest rates are very less.its only deposit where your money is secured and you get a very less return. if you want a high return then you have to put your money somewhere else taking some risk.

Fixed Deposits have lost their sheen as a investment product

Thanks deepa .. in my opinion the best way to optimise a FD is to put it for a longer use and only if the investor has no idea to utilise the FD for such period should he /she prefer to invest in a FD, there are better instruments in the market today which would give higher returns

I agree with the point as FD's has lost their sheen as if one is doing research than there is nothing so much to research abt FDs and if u want better returns than FD, than u must do research in certain mutual funds n SIPs r also there. After doin research there u will definately invest in certain good MFs with good portfolio n good returns in past as well as can b picked for gud future returns also
