I believe Marketing and advertising differs from region to region, there can't be a single strategy for the whole of India, as one marketing strategy will not work in other region as there might be a total disconnect interms of the whole concept or an ad or the strategy. And especially if one is placing a product targetted at the rural consumers, here also it is a different ball game altogether.

Marketing to urban consumers is somewhat routine, but marketing and advertising for rural consumers is a bit difficult, so would like to know How to go about Marketing and advertising for Rural consumers??

Ideas should be more community centric

idea posted by Sheetal Jadhav Sales/BD Manager, Future Group

A typical feature of Indian rural areas is the well-bonded community structure, which is why advertising and marketing too needs to have a community feel to it.

I remember one such strategy by LG earlier, when they had to target rural consumers where they had come up with a concept like, a special ‘marriage package’ for the rural markets. The package included an entry-level television, washing machine and refrigerator. These are things that people in the rural areas buy or gift when they get married. And this was a big hit for that matter. The branding of this package was done by LG after understanding the needs of the rural consumer, something that is integral to brand building in the rural market. It needs to be about rural needs and the difference it is going to make to their lives.

I do agree with the above statement as the idea to promote any brand/product varies from region to region which enhances companies adult minds to think out of the box for marketing which can disseminate the revenue to bottom line.

Marketing a product in an urban area is a different strategy or I can say it's something that you are targeting a consumer base which is more efficient to understand one common language but, marketing a product in an rural community need's strong strategy for R&D and then planning to achieve sales goals.

The language to promote the product should be related to the community which relates, attracts & seduces them to buy & spend for which they (consumer ) thinks he is near to the satisfaction/desire/need/want etc.

Idea should be well versed with the language which targets the community. If the language is not clear or concerned then the sales & after sales service is out of the question.

The marketing focus for the rural market should be oriented toward community and family. The rural family is a large family and the ads should focus on this aspect.

However, times are changing and this feature may also undergo a change. Thus, for the rural consumer, the utility value of the product/service coupled with brand prestige is important.....

Understanding the Rural Psychology:

Under stand the culture ,spending habits, requirements/needs.

In Urban areas people doesnot mind spending small amounts or big amounts in view of their purchasing power.

In Rural areas purchasing is done depending upon the necessity, as Amruta Koranne said.

The following items should be taken into consideration when we make an ad for rural consumers

a. Advantages of purchsing the product.

b. Endorsement by community Leaders.

c.Identifying with local folk.

d. Identifying with local cultural activities.

e.identifying with local festivals.

f.User should endorse: such as doctor for tooth paste, Mason for cement, Ladies for sarees, ladies for washing powder etc.,

its very important to understand there mind state before promoting product over there. it should be considered that to whom we are approaching either its male or female because they have different types of controls in their hands specially in india.and also rural consumers don't spend money for any unnecessary thing, so its important to make believe that the product whatever it is, will be beneficial to them.

ONE WINDOW SOLUTION AND LOCAL LANGUAGE

idea posted by Nitin M Aras Head/VP/GM-Tech. Support, ODTIN Food Solutions Pvt Ltd

Rural people wish to have one solution or one organization can give entire solution for them... and use of local language helps in creating a healthy and trustworthy environment. Both the tools can be used as a good marketing tools.

I am confident because I am a farmer and rular person absolutely... and  feel these are the lagging areas in marketing and only because of this people loose their business in rural areas.

using landscape is a very good option. in rural areas, people are divided into small landscapes, so if one can target these landscapes efficiently then nothing better than this.

Use the media they are more familiar with

USe of rural media like folk play, mobile announcements etc. are what touches an instant cord in the rural media's mind. One you want to reach them, reach them through their medium that they are most familiar with. There is no point in sending sms to them as even though they might own a mobile phone, they might not be well versed in checking an sms in the first place. So, use mediums that are unique and a part of their lifestyle in each region. For some it might be the weekly market, for other it might be a temple festival in which your brand can participate etc.

SHGs are the easiest way to penetrate rural areas. The products suggested should be cost-effective, relative to best brands available in the market, and should not cause any side-effect. Number of samples distributed free of cost should develop recall value in the customers' mind.
