Many companies overlook the ability of productive rivalry to stimulate innovation. That could be a loss, not only has it been a powerful contributor to innovation in the past.

Thus, now it is seen that companies are promoting rivalry amongst employees to fuel innovation. Its risky but greater the risk more is the profit....

So, how to go for a rivalry that will ensure innovation??

That could be a difficult subject. I agree that management should monitor situations like this. It could be risky to encourage or even allow productive rivalry in a company because it can get out of hand. But on the other hand it could possibly be a good benefit to a company or project. Rivalry has negative connotations. A better word for it can be competition. By using the word competition the situation is looked at differently.

Competition is a better word and competition is good as long as it is healthy and not rooted in any sort of anger, hostility, jealousy, or pettiness. The positives are good and lively atmosphere in working conditions. It makes you work harder when you’re trying to beat someone else. The negatives would be if people get carried away and act obnoxious.

There is also a lot of finger pointing that can go on, where people claim a person or things is being favored. Violence should never be the answer. There are positives and negatives with healthy competition or rivalry. It really depends on how people go about this and the strategy that’s used in a situation like this. But in situations like this there must be firm ground rules laid out and they must be made clear. Productive rivalry / Competition could spark innovation and / or better collaboration.

Create competency groups

idea posted by Saket Vishal Sr Consultant, Xebia

It is always good to put forward groups rather than individuals. Create competency groups that have their own focus and objectives. Competing these groups against each other with knowledge sharing, rewards, and other factors, will help in creating a very productive environment.
