Bosses are meant to be guides, to be people who show you the way, who manoeuvre the organisation and you towards the desired objectives, people who groom you to take on larger roles in your career. In short, from an employee’s perspective, bosses are meant to be the organisation itself. For most people, life in an organisation starts and ends with their boss.

The best bosses that I have heard of like to be surrounded by talent and ambition. In fact, they welcome it. But not everyone who is talented gets lucky.

What happens when you are lumped with a boss who is jealous of your talents or turns hostile towards you? Boss jealousy is not uncommon. You need to be extremely secure as a boss to not suffer pangs of jealousy.  So, how to handle a boss who is jealous of you??

Make them feel secure in your company

idea posted by Dipika Das Associate/Sr. Associate -(NonTechnical), ABC Consultants Private Limited

The only way to convert these bosses is to make them feel secure in your company. They need to believe that even though you have it in you to upstage them, you will never do so.

It is this confidence that you need to build through both verbal and non-verbal acts, which will act as a positive tool for you. There are various ways in which you can do so.  And consulting such bosses often is a means to buy confidence. Acknowledge their area of expertise and get their insights. It might be difficult for you in the beginning because you feel that you too are an expert. But in the interest of building a relationship, do consult them.  So, that you can minimize the jealousy part.

thx D, i tend to agree with you. actually these guys are basically insecure due to actual or pecieved inabilties. jealousy, bullying, or other similar behaviour are outward manifestations of a deeper malaise. making them feel secure and helping the poor souls is about what we can do in our own, and in the interest of the organisation. they aren't going far - so lets be nice to them while they are colleagues !!

Dipika : Why did not this topic crop up way back in May 1997 and  I would not ve lost my job with Graphite India Ltd. Just because I procurred order for 1700 MT from SAIL Plants and as well collected the stuck up money of Rs. 13 lacs , I had to lose my job . Point to learn always under perform yourself . In films the stunt man performs while the hero wins the accolades . Always under perform and as much as possible never interact with seniors to your boss . That is the way you can retain your job else its not insecurity but the intolerance that makes you lose your job . I lost my job because my boss promoted a subordinate 20 years junior to me in service and whom I selected , not being able to digest I resigned . But if money is sweeter than prestige you ve to bear all this , cos the prof world do not accept a loser .

From experience I can say that the best way to handle such people is to help them to look good - make excellent presentations for them, equip them with all background information before any important meeting, take them through possible questions that may be asked or issues raised. In fact they must be made to look smart before their bosses.

Remember, the boss who is jealous is also afraid that you are gunning for his position. Of course let him feel secure, but help him to rise as well - he will want to take you along with him.

I strongly believe that you can never win a fight with your boss.

Instead the right thing to do is to make him look good to his bosses.He/she will always consider you as a value add to his/her team.If you are doing your job right - then you will help him move up the corporate ladder and this would ensure a place for you too. Also if your really good at your job , then your boss has done at-least one right thing , surround himself/herself with a high quality team member ;)

Why should one change due to boss nature? Just do your work without any of these thoughts. You are being paid by the organisation and not by the boss.

I feel sorry for the boss who cannot encourage his/her direct reporter.

Make them feel secure in the company. Just pretend that he is the best and your presence is not going to make any difference.

Whether u like it or not, there'll be few good old men or women in all companies who really lack in competence, but are there for different reasons like loyalty or other links.  We have to face the reality. The best way to face it is to keep telling him / her that he only brings the opportunities to prove your talent. You should be grateful to him that he only provides the contrast to make your talent brightly visible to top management. Replace his jealousy with a sense of a 'mentor'.

A boss's work is not to torture but to nurture the subordinates. There lies the efficiency to get the required work done by the staffs. A boss is also an employee of the same organization where the subordinate is. So the boss is also to look after the benefit of the organization he/she works with the help of his/her staffs only. The boss is a peer, an evaluator for improvement of work skill of the staffs.  After all Boss is Not God.

He is jealous of you because he felt you are resoursefull and creative. Then you see whather there is any point in taming him.if very sure go for it.But first say to yourself you will never take his place and be jealous.take jealousy as a subject for learning, treat your boss  the way you treat your Kith& kin with problems. And always remain studious saying yourself that in the process you are NATURALLY  becoming competent for his post and even above-so take things slowly and certainly.I suggest if it is a creative aim do be Shrewd.Neverlet this affect your work. regards.ashok kumar

Improve Performance Management System

idea posted by Karthik Chief Executive Consultant, Kognosance Management Consulting
A boss can be jealous when he feels threatened by his sub-ords' progress/popularity. However, it can go to levels of becoming an issue if the boss feels its likely that his sub-ord is going to grow faster than him. In case of most organizations the cause of such indicators of bad culture is often a badly planned or implemented performance management system. Trying to get into the good books of managers by deviant and superficial means such as supporting him even in wrong decisions is nothing less than being unethical and will seldom work in the long run. In dealing with bad bosses, employees can consider requesting a skip-level discussion, or contact HR with the issue.
