Ease your way into the practice

idea posted by Raji S Business Analyst, SAP

According to me every body who wants to go agile either they would have read a book or a journal on Agile project management and then you are about to give it a shot. You get the team together and then layout every possible procedure and exception path for the new Agile approach. Then after couple of days you see the team getting back to their old days and habits, it is in human nature to go back which is comfortable, and resist change that is the way they have been doing all these days. So take a few fundamental Agile concepts, such as iterations and a product backlog and implement them first. Let the project team ease into the transition. And then at the end have a meeting like what they learned, suggest other Agile practices as ways to counter the challenges that the team faced. Before long you will have implemented a full Agile lifecycle within your enterprise.  This was the way we made transition  at our workplace and it is yielding great results.  And this will help the organization in a long way.

Hi Brajesh,

Good Morning and its nice to see your comments and feedback on Agile Management. Even though not being an expert in Agile Management field I would like to comment that practicable way will not always be successful at this time . We should also consider the methodological and scheduled way to manage the deliverables and the resources along with the clients(Internal /External). Unless we have proper plan and metrics in place it will difficult for a manager to control/manage the project to make it a successful one.

Thanks

Rakesh

I am working in AGILE for last 18 month using VersionOne tool. For me AGILE means develop and deliver the code in a smart way to the customer. But agile needs atleast 12-14 hours of work at offshore .

Finding the right customer

idea posted by Maneesh Jain Business Analyst, Oracle

To me, when it comes to implementing agile, no matter whether you are a project manager serving internal or external customers, selecting the right one to begin your Agile development is the key. This is due to one of the fundamentals of Agile, where having constant customer involvement throughout the entire lifecycle. It is essential that you find a customer who is willing to make themselves readily available to your team, it will be even better if they would consider co-locating with your team for the duration of the project.

Fundamentally, with strong customer involvement your chances for success with Agile Project Management increase dramatically.

Agile have it's limitations & not applicable to every field. More correctly it suits mostly to IT sector.

Agile cannot work in all kinds of projects. It works best in a product development environment where requirements are constantly evolving and you have feature list which needs to be planned across several product releases. Here the customer involvement is very high as the situation is very dynamic and typically the onsite-offshore ratio of such projects are 50-50 or sometimes even 60-40 where the onsite ratio is higher. The onsite team lead or manager may act as a scrum manager who leads the scrum meetings every day and who coordinates with various teams within the customer org and with the offshore teams.

Projects where scope is clear and the entire estimation and planning of phases and deliverables are already finalized with the customer, in such cases waterfall or RUP works best. Here the customer may not like to be involved very heavily on day-to-day basis.

So the point I want to emphasize here is that Agile is not the solution of all kinds of projects. Use it where its features can be utilized best.

De-centralization of management can help a team transition to Agile Frameworks

It's no more a new thing on the edge. The more you de-centralize the more agile you become. Accountability moves to the lowest level of hierarchy, making it look like a flat hierarchy. It works...believe me...

The concept of de-centralization has sustained so far and has proven to be effective in almost everything. Consider the Panchayati Raj in our country.

Being Practical

idea posted by Brajesh Sharma Business Analyst, Mentor Graphics

Ok so everybody is talking agile, so even we'll go agile, this is wrong what they are doing, not every methodology should be rigidly implemented without careful consideration as to whether each and every practice is applicable to one's environment or not.

As a project manager we all know that one should consider the company culture and the operating environment before planning a project and the same holds true for implementing a new methodology like Agile.

One should carefully consider the major facets of Agile and determine whether the practice will/not work within your environment before implementing it out to your team. Also, don’t be afraid to modify practices to fit your organizations needs as well. You can still be true to the intent of Agile even if you implement is a modified approach. So being practical is very important, it is not that one should implement everything.
