The progress of green IT is in danger of becoming a classic technological chicken and egg, if properly not formulated. So what steps a company can take to initiate and implement Green IT? If you have better ideas please share...

Power Efficient Systems

idea posted by Vikas Garg Project Manager, ITC Infotech
Power saving through changing over to energy efficient devices and appliances including PCs, Work Stations and Servers. As cited blade servers with thin remote clients is emerging IT technology to save on power, maintenance and storage.

Say No to high-end video cards as it consumes more power and use a low end video card which consumes lesser power.

Add your argument:

Using telecommunication

idea posted by Asmita Rai Journalist, GBN

Usage of teleconferencing, video conferencing to contact your clients, suppliers and distributors as it will lead to decrease in green house gas emissions realted to travel.

System recycling

Computer systems which are outdated and no more used by an organization can be donated to various charities or non-profit organization to use it.Parts from outdated systems should be salvaged and recycled as it can keep harmful materials such as lead, mercury, out of landfills.

Power saving while maintaining a nice powerful machine is easy to make. buy a cpu fabricated on a 45nm process, saving power while maintaining speed and lowering the power requirements for a PSU. ATi radeon 4850 is a nice speedy card, and very power efficient compared to cards with the same performance! A efficient PSU, keeping in mind that a non-efficient PSU can waste as much as 40% energy.

the biggest of all savers... below..

Instead of using tens to hundreds of server clusters, use 3 server racks of nvidia tesla units, which are so much cheaper than clusters, very efficient and power to performance ratio is amazing.

(Bear in mind this is my first time posting)

Run a pareto on identified areas

idea posted by Dhananjay Raturi Head of the Department, XYZ

In my opinion:

Sophisticated open source & commercial power-meters, carbon calculators along with carbon footprint dashboards will be available in the market soon.So visibility  and insight against the metrics will not be a big problem.

The methodology that Green IT champions can adopt could be an improvisation/detailing of the following basic steps

1.List the carbon culprits and run a Pareto to identify candidates to be addressed within the approved green budget that deliver the maximum ROI.

(In the current scenario it's not difficult to identify the major culprits- like desktops for instance)

The champion must also explore 'opportunities' like webcommutes, virtual networking(VNC) keeping in mind the change management issues involved therein.

2.create a case for Green IT ( citing case studies [like Deloitte ] ) with clear budgetary and ROI projections and get approval from the management.

3. get started with the topmost candidate in a projectized fashion, deliver the results, measure their impact on work environment and behavior along with the ROI.

Go to step 1

PS:

Thanks for referring this one Ms. Dutta.
hope my contribution adds a fraction of value that i received from here

Switching to Cloud Computing

idea posted by sakshi sawhney Software Engineer, Accenture

Cloud computing is a better way to run your business. Instead of running your application yourself, they run on a shared data center. When you use any application that runs in the cloud, you just log in, customize it, and start using it.

It implies the concept of using software as service, platform and infrastructure.

One does need to get into maintenance work and concentrate only on their core business. This not only maximizes the profits as there is no need to buy servers, licences of software third party ie cloud provider look to these issues and also lead to efficient utilization of the servers in the cloud leading to lesser emissions of CO2. Also less electronic waste

Also the computers at end terminal(cloud users) need not be of higher configuration as the will be making use software as service and hence profits+green IT are confirmed.

So,Cloud computing is a simple idea, but it can have a huge impact on your business.

The only thing needed is more awareness about Cloud Computing to make it a success.
