Nissan Motor Co. showed off its super-quiet, zero-emission electric car on Monday - a key green offering for Japan's No. 3 automaker, which has fallen behind in hybrid technology.

Sales of Nissan's electric vehicle is scheduled to begin next year. Nissan says it plans to mass produce zero-emission cars globally from 2012.

We know that fuel prices are at a high & petroluem is very nearly going to be extinct. Now people think electric cars are the future of the automobile industry. Electric cars are being quite popular because of its effeciency & less fuel consumption. But even now quite a huge percentage of people are not willing to adopt electric cars. Why is that so? What measures are to be taken to increase the adoption of electric cars?

Comfort level is too low

idea posted by Sudeep Tarafdar Senior Consultant, IBM

Now as electric cars have been launched in the automobile market I was also having an idea of purchasing one because it was quite affordable to my budget. But while i had an thorough study on the vehicle I felt that it might not be the correct choice for not only me but also many others.

The first problem what I found out was that the vehicle is really delicate. So I feel that driving in it is will be pretty dangerous in heavy traffic & at times of over speeding when needed. Second problem which came to my notiice is that drivers who are tall enough wont fit into the car for long Because the leg space is really tiny.

I am a fun loving person so when I drive I keep music load in my car. So the third problem I found out was that it will be teriffic to drive such a small car with loud music .

See I need a car which will be comfortable for me in any level. So I do not find electric cars apt for most of the people!!!

I agree with Mr. Mukherjee. With the rise in petrol rates, people will be forced to quit petrol runned cars and adopt battery runned cars. Because of this, we need frequently available battery chargers shops everywhere.

As infrastructure to support Battery cars,we need chain of battery charger shop at least in place of car parking.against requirement of Petrol Pumps.

City pollution will come down.At 2012 Cost of Petrol/ Diesel may be closer to threefigure per liter.

Technologies have to be brought to beat the disadvantages

idea posted by Kailash Sharma Product Development Manager, Force Motors

The problem faced by electric cars is that the usage of a/c reduces the vehicles range upto 20%. And some recent researches have found out that electric cars have a big disadvantage of overheating of batteries. This disadvantage will be the main problem which makes electric cars unprefered to a huge population. If this problem is covered by new technologies than I think people will prefer electric cars.

SIR,

What ever you said above is right. but by concentrating more on the problems in existing technology improvements can be made. The thing is people are used to the conventional gasolin engine cars because greater power and driveing pleasure. common man is unaware of the new technology. A proper guide is need to convay the message to the people should bring awareness about the emission and deplesion of fossile fuels. Nothing is permanent every thing has to be re created  and to be adopted

Trush the advertisement with the car helping the environment...

idea posted by Anuj Rajpurohit Business Development, Neesa Technologies P. Ltd.

The very first thing the company should do is to generate awareness about global warming. Every one knows about fuel prices, so tell them what they not much aware of. Co. should show the effects of global warming due to the vehicle pollution and heat produced by them..and on other side this ELECTRIC CAR which will have the features which not affect the nature as compared to those fuel running cars and will satisfy a car ride too. Satisfaction of having a car which is different from others, and inner feeling of helping the environment, will encourage people to buy this car....

In electric cars ( Battery driven) is a unique system in the spirit of Global Warming, and can be used widely for short distance. The problem of A/C is there but in our country there are many type Non A/C car/vehicle.All Motor cycles and Scooters, Auto Rickshaw , Trekker, Jeeps are of non A/C.

Every garage , Parking areas shall have Battery Charging system furnished with Energy Meters in place of Petrol Pumps.Even in self garage Battery Charger can be provided for keeping the Battery fit for next day.

Educate people

idea posted by Arun Murali Senior Software Engineer, Mind Tree Limited

From this blog i can safely say people are not educated enough about this car. We have to educate them.

Ill give it a try.

To all this car that we are talking about is called as "Nissan Leaf".

  • It is expected to be an electric car to be sold in US for about $30,000. Its close to/bigger than Civic in size.
  • It has an range of about 100 miles(160 kms) for every charge and its lithium ion batteries are expected to last about 10 years(over 3L kms).
  • Its battery has a 24 KWh of capacity and About 7 KW of power.
  • The car is in every way comparable to a similar petrol car except for the range. Its infact a little more advanced.
  • It passes the crash tests.
  • It has ABS + EBD + TCS + 5/7 airbags.
  • It will have power stearing, AC, power windows and possibly powered seats too.
  • It will have a 4 speaker radio with MP3 playback.
  • It can be easily driven at 80 mph(128 kmph), electronically limited to 90mph(145 kmph).
  •  The car can be fast charged at fast charging stations with less than 1 hr plugged in(Nissan claims about 30 mins).
  • It can be charged at home in the night for 8 hrs. It will cost you about 80ps/km of drive, a car of its size will cost about Rs.9/km(including maintenance).
  • Over 50k kms it will totally cost Rs.40,000 compared to cars of similar segment Rs.4.5L
  • Not going to cost less than Rs.30L in India. So forget it.

Read http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/08/nissan-electric-leaf/

So it does not have any of the defects you are talking about. Its only the initial price. But we have to wait and see for that.

I missed this alternative vehicle discussion. i am for environment friendly cars/vehicles. The electric car has not taken off in a big way as they are at present suited to intercity travel only owing to lower mileaage per charge. They cant take you on long out-of -city travels  even on full charge. Add to this the limitation of speed you get from it. More electric storage devices using latest tech like nano tech and more speedy propulsion tech  will add charm and appeal to the electric vehicles. A breakthrough tech is needed for it

People behind prestige issues

idea posted by Sudhish Chatterjee Product Development Manager, Motors

From the past few weeks I was interestingly reading the progress of electric cars in the society. I have seen that quite a lot number of people are hesitating to adopt to electric cars. What I have got is that people are behind their prestige issues. Electric cars are small size cars which look like toy cars in the market. So people feel discomfort driving such cars which doesn't give an impression in others mind. Another disadvantage of electric cars is that it can be only used for small travels & another car will be needed for usage of long travels with a family to go.
