Plan your day. Get up early, go to office early and have a mental check-list of work for the day. Never plan to reply all the emails coming in because they will keep on popping in. Do not waste time in chit-chatting and hacing coffee even if you do not need one. All this will save more than an hour. Trust me. |

being organized is what does it best. Go to office on time. Plan your work in advance. Do the work that is planned. Dont waste time fooling around in thew office. Finish all that is required to be done that day so that others are not delayed by you and go home. If you work like this, you will find that sooner or later you will end up going home at a civilized hour.

Thanks,Gargi, you can not leave office early.Timings are fixed and so the attendance.
The best option is to reschedule your activities and allocate extra time to your family and your creativity.

Way back 1978 or so I went through a news item that process Industires in Germany adopt flexi hours for staff. The modus operandi was to leave late if friend has to come late or has an urgent domistic work, they had to work as per scheduled hours.

If you stay close to work OR the best thing, if you work from home, then it's as good as leaving early. And it is actually even better than leaving work early because we reduce chances of traffic accidents and we also reduce our frustration, road rage, and exposure to pollution as well. |

An alternative has just occurred to me. If we go to work much earlier than the rest of the people, we won't have traffic problems and our travel time is reduced to a fraction. Then, of course, having started early, we will have finished early and can leave again before the others and beat the traffic. We can be home early and spend the rest of the day doing a lot of stuff.

I am not sure if there is any organization in India that ideally follow the fix hours concept. Recently, I read Ratan Tata's statement regarding working culture of their UK staff that created a controversy all over. What Ratan Tata said shows the tipical Indian mentality...if you can work 18 hours a day, it doesn't mean you can also force others to work similar way. In UK and other western countries, workers are more educated and aware about their rights, and to do nothing wrong taking advantage of their rights. In India, if you talk about your rights, you would be considered as the biggest enemy of the organization.
Agreed with Piyali Adhikary, you can not leave office early if you have proper plans in place. Because, if you would complete your work before time, your boss would consider that you can do more work and would load you with more work. So you would never be able to leave office early.

"if you talk about your rights, you would be considered as the biggest enemy of the organization".
This is not true. West Bengal and Kerala are good examples where 95% of its industries were destroyed by these so called champions of 'rights of employees'. How can we describe poverty to people who haven't experienced it ever in their lives?

I do not know how many of you agree with me with this thought, but I have always been successful with it. When ever I want to leave the office or factory early I will go tell my boss that I want to leave early. There is one thing I always have my schedule laid out clearly, so I wanted to go early on a particular day I inform my boss and my team well in advance so that there will not be any issues in this regard.

Completely agree, reach office on time, Prepare a check-list of work for the day. Delegate you work diligently and try to make someone accountable for whatever you assign to your team so that work doesn’t hamper so as the company. Yes, I also agree with Manish, that there are bosses who will never let you go early even if you have completed your work on time or before time. They would expect you to do more. But it’s not a case with every employer. I also had been a part of such company where I was not allowed to leave office at 7 :( (on time) even if my work is completed
Treat work as means for supporting your materilaistic life and not asa passion...life is work + other things

We tend to mentally get sucked into office work and a time may come that we feel work is everything and all others are secondary...one has to get over this mental block...work sincerely and earn your wages but realize that life is work + so many other things ..like family; hobbies and leisure...one has to balance this attitude well and no doubt it's a tight rope walking !

Well first of all why to leave office early..if it is a genuine problem or urgency then it is okay..complete the minimum time required for work and leave else work should be our top priority we get paid for what we do, and what we do is linked with how company performs. In india no doubt we are one of the best work force of the world but still growing tendency of escaping from work is increasing day by day. in this case we must learn from work style of Japanese people who know that if they work their country will grow..they think in broader prospective then us....while our thinking is always limited to ourselves only.

First of all I am not totally agree with Gargi because its a human psychology to spend more than two hours in chit chatting as its necessary for every to regain their official environment in their mind, to recollect yesterdays task by discussing with their colleagues whether in personal or formal way, it depends upon the chemistry between two or more of them. Spend time for leisure during office timing is necessary for every one as it refresh mind to work more efficiently in less time period. One should note that if he/she wants to take leave early before ending up of office timing, then they have should have good chemistry with their senior or upper management just after them (who permits them for little permissions).
In human life the main thing which is always take him on right path is time management, fulfilling of task in time or before the time has always carry positive response for them. So the most important is to finish your efficiently in less time period.

Jobs are classified as 'paper pushing' and 'decision making'. If one is endowed with either it depends on when one finishes the job. Then also job is not a thing you do to just satisfy someone it is done for further growth and responsibilities depending on ones skills and professionalism endowed. One cannot do it like it is an 8 to 5 activity done to keep you safe. R and D jobs one can leave early many days though clerical and management jobs require one to 'carry home' work. Recreation if one can disassociate from work is acceptable then work is something one cannot disassociate from when one empowers oneself deep into it. Thanks.

Dont take all the work on your head, learn to delegate work to your subordinates and make them responsible for finishing them on time. If your subordinates are not good, recruit better employees instead of taking the work load on your head.
But for all this start your day by oranising your work and delegating at the begining of the day itself.

Apart from the suggestion given by Gargi, you must able to convince your boss to avoid series of meeting in a day. Moreover mobile should be either switched off or kept at silent during meeting so that meeting should end on time and others time should not be wasted. apart from this you may plan not to attend unwanted calls during the day and sechdule a time to call back all the missed calls so that job in progess should be completed in time.
Just try and revert.

Most of us, work hard and smart to be noticed at work or to go early from work but more than working hard, one needs to learn working smart as then one will be able to prioritize one's work and be able to set deadlines for such work. This will help create work life balance and trust me ...those who have ample free time at their discretion after finishing their works, are actually the most productive people.

You have to maintain a balance in office life and as well as in family life.Otherwise we will end up in pathetic at one jucture of life. By the time we understand the damage in personnel life we will reach a fatigue end of job life. So better awake and Organze a balanced life ,so that you will live healthy and lead a happy family life along with successful job life. Work will never end.Avoid wasting the time during office hours so that you can justify both. N.S.Rao,CPWD |

Sony is yet again ready to layoff 10,000 employees. It is not clear if this will be from Japan or overseas. This makes us think that how unpredictable can working in big brands be. We normally think that we should go for a big brand instead of... |
Lay-offs are back? |
