Energy consumption is a concern for hotels with a growth rate of nearly 6%. Hotel/restaurant executives are under increasing pressure to reduce energy consumption and lower operating costs in order to keep their restaurants competitive. Energy consumption is one of the largest costs, hotel and restaurant executives are looking for ways to reduce consumption while improving customer and employee comfort. Can I have some ideas to make hotels more energy efficient.

Occupancy sensors

idea posted by Mayank S. Dalal Proprietor, Calomax

One can use Occupancy sensors for the lighting, A.Cs and fans, televisions etc. so that it usese power only when somebody is in that area. Like in Wash room the lights & exhaust fan are running contineously, here f one use the occupancy sensors then it saves a great amount of electricity

yes occupancy sensors are the best option and  best energy savers as well utilizing other factors for saving fuel water etc

Add sensors at the water taps ( out lets) which uses less water & reduces unnecessory wastage of water thereby saving in water & power also.

Energy efficient hotels

idea posted by Praveen varma Sr Manager, Reliance Industries

Some of the points are:

1. The use of LED lights in hotel can save tremendous energy.

2. The use of solar energy with battery backup for night. Oh ya .. you might be thinking that Solar is not a feasible because of the battery replacement cost but let me tell you that there are technology which can give the extended life to battery i.e. around 1.5 to 2.5 times of original life. Check out the website r-charge.com. There are many other indeginous technology available in this field.

3. There was a concept called day light, which was not very popular but the same can be thought of implementing in hotel during day time.

4 Wind power can be also be used for obtaining free energy.

There are many other ways which needs the reaserch and for the same reasons are not included here.

Trust this will help.

Regards

I appreciate your points Mr. Praveen, the points you gave really are efficient enough to make energy efficient hotels....

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle.

idea posted by Satish N Bapat Partner/Principal/VP Technergy ESCo Pvt. Ltd.

Reduce: Wastage of water before you can get hot water in the room.

Reuse: Voluntarily ask customers to permit change of linen every other day. This is being practised in many hotels.

Recycle: Collect paper, plastics and other waste and recycle whwerever possible.

Excellent ideas.Putting Solar cells in the roof and outside the sun facing walls.Perfect sealing of rooms and make them air tight. If refrigerators provided should be placed in antirooms to reduce heat load in main room.LED lights for low wattage in passages and corridors.Only task light in dressing mirror and Reading table as well as in the bed head side with close switches,

If it is centralised AC Hotel properb isolating facility in every room should be available so that it can be immidiately operated when the room will be vacated.AC control temp can be raised to 24 celicious to reduce electrical load on AC.AC ducts shall be properly insulated.Windows glass panes shall be polarised and provided with full cartain to reduce heat entry throhgh window.

Any partition between AC and non AC area shall be with double door if posible furnished with Air curtain.

Providing auto closing in Bathroom door to avoid extra heat load .

Kitchen shall be well ventilated and away from AC area to avoid heat load.

Room service food shall be discouraged by differantial price as it increases heat load.

Proper partitioning between wings to be provided to isolate if there is no guest to reduce AC load.

If centralised hot water system is there line shall be insulated and kept under observation for regular inspection.

To convert your hotel into enery efficient there are two steps 1. Action to be taken which results directly reduction in to energy consumption a) Replace all the light, bulbs etc. with energy efficient one. b) Check which equipment consuming more energy and either replace it or repair it. c) Issue necessary instruction to staff so that unwanted use or wastge of light is reduced to zero. Example swith off the light and fan and pc when there is no use.d) Make sure during day time enough sunlight is coming in to all the place of hotel so during day time use of light becomes to zero.e) Install a plant (gobber gas plant type) which produce Mithen gas from the outlet of urinal, latrins, westage of kitchen, and use that mithen ges for cooking purpose so your costing or investment on gas for cooking will reduced. The output of this plant or remaining of this is usefull for agriculture, so by selling this you will earn extra income to your business. So many technics are available inthis time.f) Try to do enery audit by external auditor, So he will show you where is energy wested? what is quantum? How can you reduce it? What are different type of options available in your area? g) Check the interior colour of rooms? It should be lite reflected one meance you required the less no of lights. h) Check the working method of your staff, How many costmers they serve? Is ther excess staff? if there are excess staff than you are investing more unnecessary .Check it.i) Try to install solar sells which convert light in to direct electricity which can store into batteries and can be use when require meance into passage of hotel, in dining room, kitchen etc depends upon your install capacity.

Use Hybrid Air Handling Units

idea posted by Darshi Dhaliwal Principal Consultant , Climate Control Bureau

HVAC operating costs are one of the major overheads at any facility due to high ambient temperature and humidity in  the Indian subcontinent .HVAC energy use may account for 32 to 40% of the total energy used by hotel buildings.

It is a known fact that although there has been many improvements in energy efficiency of Cooling generation  equipment like chillers ,motor, fans etc over the last 100 years but the Key Demand Side  Management (DSM)  component : Air Handling Unit  has seen no improvement.

A Mumbai based company has now started offering a new range of Hybrid Air Handling Units  for retrofit in old installations. Have a look at their website  www.unidyne -energy.com

These new Hybrid Air Handling units use a very interesting Heat Recovery scheme based on counter current Plate heat exchangers. Annualised energy savings  claimed exceed 50% almost at any location in India. It looks feasible.

Hotel Facilities are power guzzlers .Even if the saving are little  less than claimed, it will still make a substantial difference to the bottom line of the facility and save a few Megawatts.

Treated fresh air is an other area that must be addressed in a  more energy efficient manner. As these are  power intensive and 24X 7 Applications in a hotel so the impact is many times more than replacing a few lights .

Install energy-efficient lighting systems

I think using the ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), and light emitting diode (LED) exit signs will reduce the energy consumption to a greater extent.

Installing Energy efficient products like LED, AIRCON SAVER, DIMMER, NATURAL SWITCH, SOLAR are the best thing and also all are lifetime products. I am  happy to be in a same Energy saver line and helping the world to be GREENER. and i am able to reduce your energy by 30% on average. rmohaan@gmail.com

Cut all unnecessary operations

idea posted by Adesh Dalvi Marketing Executive, TAJ

In a BIg Hotel, 70% of the energy is wasted by different machines which are on stand by. These machines should have a start up and shut down time. Energy wasted in laundry, corridors, lounges, Banquet for unnecessary reasons should be minimised.

Use of Renewable energy sources such as Geothermals and Solar Energy

idea posted by Mandeep K. Bajwa Architect, RMC (India) Infrastructure Ltd.

It takes a lot of energy to heat rooms in winters and cool them in summers.Half of the nergy used in average home is for heating and cooling. The three fuels used most ofeten to do this rae: Natural Gas, Electricity and Heating oil.

But in the future, we should look upon to use the renewable energy sources such as Geothermals and Solar energy, to meet our requiremnts.
