Motivation,empowerment,rewards and employee satisfaction can lead to innovative ideas in an employee and thus in becomes the DNA and is inherited from one employee to another.

In order to make innovation as DNA of one Organization, it requires a lot of change in attitude by the big bosses. It is true that the mind power of Indians is quite better and if an opportunity is given, innovation will come out automatically. But, the scenario is different in actual field and many ideas generated were vanished in the mind it self with out getting a proper platform in many Organizations. I thanks to the Companies who encourage innovation and implement new ideas.

Knowledge Management

Innovation is basically an offshoot of improved knowledge. Proper Knowledge Management systems are important to make innovation a part of normal functioning in any organization. The regular inflow of knowledge of new discoveries from leading research centers, marketing, production experts etc., would keep the personnel abreast of the changes taking place in the relevant fields. Similarly feedback from customers would be a very valuable tool in kindling the activities of think tank within the organization.

Generally an environment in which knowledge is shared freely would be conducive to elicit and encourage innovations. An imaginative visualization of not only problems but also possible improvements and initiatives should be made part of channels of communication. Periodical brain-storm sessions should be planned by the Knowledge Managers, with a view to recognizing innovative efforts attempted and to identifying innovations to be tried.

Innovation is a function of the company's ability to think ahead of time and willingness to allow change and accept failure. Indian companies are not very open to change and try to just keep products & services to serve customers - not willing to change, hence innovation suffers.

Recently read a book - Making Innovation Happen by Porus Munshi, where he talks about 13 firms/people who he described as Orbit Shifters and who were willing to look beyond serving customers and bring something new. It required a different mindset, atitude shift and willingness to take risks and allow employees to try something new within a broadly defined framework.

This requires enormous maturity at top management level to allow a bunch of people/team to try new ideas with some funds & research/admn or other support with a timeline but leave them alone to work on it. Indian organizations need to break the shackles of bureaucractic, red-tapism narrow minded approach to products/services and allow fresh ideas if INNOVATION has to happen. Dr Mashelkar from Marico Innovation Foundation is a great example of one who championed innovation at CSIR Labs.

Innovation is every where. Be it

  • Formulation of the new product
  • Introduction of a novel service
  • Presentation of the brand new idea
  • Development of new technique to solve the problem

Sequentially speaking the development of the innovations is encouraged by the organizations in every field to improve their Profitability of their Products ideas services and techniques by,

  • Brain storming of the members of the organizations irrespective of their field in which they are working in their organization
  • Formal group technique where the ideas are gathered ranked and rated
  • Delphi technique wherein the innovations are invited posing the problems in the (usually in questionnaires) knowledge domain of experts like Too step or any experts committee chosen the respective organization and processing the ideas.

The innovations come out of the people’s minds takes shape as the product, service or technique in hands of factories organizations and experts.

Innovation comes as an outcome of exploring novel concepts and ideas. As the success or failure of such innovations is associated with compensation it is very difficult to get people try innovative ideas. Well, if the idea succeeds he gets rewarded through appreciation and compensation. It is true that a moment’s insight is sometimes worth a life’s experience. But for a person to take a risk he has to be motivated. An optimal incentive scheme could be formulated that can tolerate early failures and reward long term success.
