Giving half end projects, a new angle...

I could say kill the projects that need to die. Some projects are troubled because they should never have been launched or never allowed to continue. It is important to end those rapidly. I sometimes like to look at a distressed project as a brand new project. We have a team and we may have some partial deliverables, but I try to look at the project with fresh eyes. I check the quality of the deliverables completed so far. I look at the quality of the plan. Often times we throw out the old plan and create a new one from scratch, starting from today. We plan out a new project, how to get from what we have now to some useful ending point. Sometimes we come up with new project goals.

My argument is "should we kill or cure this project". Review the claimed business benefits and make sure they are sound. If people are claiming they can reduce headcount ask them who they are planning on making redundant. Then review what the full cost of the project will be by the time you have replanned it and delivered it. When you have both numbers review the benefits against the cost of the project being completed and if the benefits don't greatly outweigh the costs then kill the project off., If the benefits do outweigh the costs then you have a good base to move forward using the revised plan and benefits case and strong project management...

The points which Mr. Gupta and Mr. Abhishekh pointed out clearly points out the mistake is from our side because of which the project became unsuccessful. But whatever be the reason of its incompleteness. Truth is, now it is dead. But still we should not forget that already we have spent a lot of amount on these projects. We cannot just give up like that. I mean, if we close this suddenly, the time, energy and money we spent on these will go in vain. Thus, I can suggest why not to give these half completed projects, a new angle, maybe we have to spent little bit more amount, but still we will be saved from the loss of money and time we might have faced by closing the project. And It will get its sales one day. Nothing remains unsolt, maybe we not get our dream price, but that will be better than losing money in vain... |

Nice insight Tercy...with so much benefits..i'll try this one out, and it is a great way to unwind i guess.... |
While handling multi project ,project manager is caught between the project management and application ownership of the Project. |
In addition to Saurabh, moving the multi project to higher accuracy levels and quality standards as per prescribe time is quite difficult. Every minute of a project is crucial for its success i.e, managing time is also a big challange. |
