Managing today’s highly skilled professionals takes special skills — and not the ones that you may think. Most often, knowledge workers know more than you do about their jobs. So, how do you manage people who know more about what they do than you do?

I mean there will be team leaders, managers, senior managers, Boss, and in this way the organizational hierarchy goes on and there is every chance that the lower level of employees are highly skilled than that of a senior level employee or even knows more about the job than you do....So, how to handle such employees at the workplace?? I mean I am personally feeling this problem where a junior of mine is like this, he knows too much and he is good at it...and there are some instances where there is disagreement b/w both of us and these instances now are becoming way to often, so, what to do in such cases??  please help me out here......

Work on their weaknesses

idea posted by Darshana Sawant HR Manager, Leading IT services company

I mean even a highly skilled professionals will be having certain loopholes, they can't be perfect 10/10, its ok if he is having better ideas and knows more about, but you have more experience than them and show them where else they lack may be interms of strengthening their abilities like, today with less job security and more global competition, it’s critical that people update and refine their skills continuously. And as an experienced person we need to look beyond skills needed today and help them in teaching skills that they will need tomorrow.  With this atleast they will not be rude to you when giving their ideas, or they will not show off that they know more than you do.

YES OPEN MIND COMMUNICATION NEED

Darshana I agree with you and everybody has strengths and weaknesses. Smart employees need help in this area. In addition to that, there should be respect and consideration given to employees. Look at ways to build rapport and a cohesive work environment. Try to set clear expectations, have open lines of communication, plan regular meetings with employees, develop listening skills, give them challenges,  communicate to them that they can't be rude or disrespectful, look at each candidate's ability to make a unique contribution to your organization etc, etc…

Highly skilled professionals in an organisation are so fragile to be handled with utmost care! They are prime movers to reach the objective of the corporates should not be tamed every now and them! Give them their space and see the difference!

Yes there is definetely no other option available to maximize the output in the organization except giving them freedom. They need to be guided and  with rules to play and the focusto achieve the end results which are effectively monitored, they should flourish. In all respects they should have all the free play to manage their work the way they want. Only two things shouldnot be compromised - that is safety of the individual, team members and the organisation and secondly personal integrity which includes office discipline which should not be compromised.

Understand their sensibilities

idea posted by Mohammad Bakhsh Project Leader/Managing Consultant, Freelancer

The most important part is take every thing on there face value. The junior most can be more knowledgeable for that particular job,you may  be skeptical about .Incorporate his or her suggestions. As for senior professionals, you have recruited them for their knowledge .Please respect their views. In both the cases, you have to care of their sensibilities lest they may regress. Thanks,Darshana for reference.

The senior or junior all wish to be heard. The body language conveys telltale sign of their pleasure or unhappiness.Their grievances must be addressed right time and proper way.

We come across 3 kinds of skills in organization-

1.Informative

2.Intelligence

3.Ideas

At initial stage highly skilled professionals should be recognized through these angles and then behave accordingly....

BEFRIEND HIM/HER

EASIEST WAY IS TO HANDLE A PERSON WITH MORE THAN THE REQUIRED LEVELS OF SKILL AND EFFICIENCY IS TO BEFRIEND HIM/HER,RECOGNISE THE SKILLS,EFFICIENCY,TALENT TRY TO GIVE MORE RESPONSIBILITIES,SHARE THE EXPERIENCES,DELEGATE YOUR WORK,SO THAT YOU GET MORE TO TIME TO ATTEND OTHER WORKS.EXPLORE THE FOSSIBILITY OF GROOMING HIM AS YOUR SUCCESSOR SO THAT YOU CLAIM THE LADDER FASTER.
