One day my boss might call me in and offer me a raise in salary. But chances are less that they will. So if I want to earn more money I have to demand/ask for a raise and how I negotiate will help me in determining what I am going to get later on.

So how should I negotiate an increase in salary with my BOSS ?

Any ideas please !

Negotiating?? : Never try impress your boss

idea posted by Dayanand Deshpande Senior Consultant, Ernst & Young
I think you should never try to impress you boss because once you start impressing your boss your emotions gets in the way which is a disadvantages it will not let you focus on your language and behavior and you tend to go out of control. This will have a great advantage for you boss, he will be controlling you later on...

Yes it vary true.....

Salary is not a problem BOSS

idea posted by Rohit Khanna Project Leader/Managing Consultant, Accenture
When you start you conversation, don't start it by showing your BOSS that the salary is the problem. If you show him the salary as a problem then he may ask you "Were you able to support your family with the current salary from past 2 years??" If you get emotional then your BOSS might start making assumptions about your attitude. So its better not to show your salary as a problem , but show him you as a solution to a number of the company’s current and future challenges. Your BOSS might afford to increase you salary after that...Good Luck

hi buddy, with the present economic situation, i would advice "please hold on to your job" unless your industry or your company is doing ok.

well, i do have guys, got fired and it's been over 5 months jobless.

It is always better to make your boss understand your situation withot hurting him and you should not compare any other person in your own organization. Be open minded and support your need for increase in salary and even if he doesn't increse your salary , be positive and work as you worked earlier, defenitely you'll be under his camera and things would change by days.... all the very best....

Make the employer feel you are the best!!

Good negotiation comes with what one keeps in front of the organization i.e., If you can prove that you can be more productive than what the orgzn. expects from you, then you get into that demanding side. By proving this you need to make ur employer feel that losing you might cost them very high at the given circumstances and they should not mind spending more on you(when they can get much out of you) rather than finding the next person whom they dont know what could he be... " Known devils are better than Unknown angels " !! .... thats it .... enjoy the hike!!.... Thank you, Manish N.

Cheers!!

I do agree with you. This has to be taken on case to case basis.

Situation-specific

idea posted by Isaac Madhavan R & D Manager, Test prep company

From my experience and that of my friends, there are at least these factors involved:

  1. Current state of the industry
  2. Profitability of your company
  3. Profitability of your division
  4. Your past performance/track record
  5. The personality of your boss and his opinion of you

So, you have to take into consideration all these factors before you approach your boss. Obviously, the best case scenario is that your industry is doing very well, your company is doing very well, your division is doing well, your track record is very good, and your boss is an empathic person who wants to keep you on his team AND wants you happy!

All the best!
