Today all the employers have few words when we ask them about pay : best in industry , comparatively high thats all. In such tough times when a company can get a person who will work more than you at less cost how to aproach to get more? What can be done to get what we deserve?

Work to build your case

idea posted by Dipika Das Associate/Sr. Associate -(NonTechnical), ABC Consultants Private Limited

Do not think that you will get paid even if you do not give output. Work for what you want. Avoid gossiping, chit chatting , wasting time in taking breaks and work hard. Show what work do you do, because showcasing is equaly important.

Certain pre conditions has to exist for an employee to be able to negotiate for higher pay or “yeh dil mangay more” situation to arise

Moto of business outfit may be primarily:- profits, value, market reach excellence in delivery quality service/product, new market creation, positioning etc. a few of these or all of these. An employee’s contribution is valued by the management (employer HR dep etc) when his her contributions, activities, presence, enrich the primary goals of the venture. Negotiating a higher pay becomes possible when you cannot be replaced you are "unique".

In business operation, managers keep a sharp watch on these developments and communicate with Hr department and/or consultants, to nip it in the bud!!

How villainous!!!, yes it’s true. So, joining the right organization is very important for a talent to rise, flourish, prosper and retained where you accept what you get.

If one can prove to the management that one is worth and is important to the organization then one need not negotiate, one will get what one is worth.

The only way you can negotiate for a higher pay is when your supervisor or manager decides to give you a raise and he will decide to give you a raise when he feels that your net worth has gone up either through value addition to your skills or non-availability of personnel of your worth in the market. Fear of your job dissatisfaction on account of salary driving you to another job is a key factor for increasing the raise.

Mr. Joydeep has given good explanation of it. I support his views on the subject. Unless you prove yourself as a unique performer of the job, you cant put your point right.

Knowing your strenths and improvising on your drawbacks and than taking a concrete step to communicate the same to you higher ups and descionmakers with quiet strength will go long way in negotiating for higher perks and salary for, than you know you are worth it...and you will get it

Understand a very clear fact of life. Employers are there to reduce their costs as much as possible. So they will obviously offer you much lower than what you expect even though they know that you are worth much more ! For a HR person or the interviewer, it is a feather in their cap if they manage to snare a good candidate at lesser cost. As the candidate be bold and if you know that the company has the potential to pay and if you know your own market worth, ask for your sum. Allow for a little bit of negotiation but not too much. I would say a plus or minus 5% is acceptable from what you quote. Remember dont fall for promises that companies hand out like - "we will revise your salary after the first six months based on your performance". This usually means they will never do it. If you sense that the company needs you then go for it. Bare it all like they say. Dont be dissappointed even if you dont land the job because you asked for that much extra. Your turn will always come. Even if it means letting go a good job sometimes !

How can you work to make your case, especially with opposition, people on top have to pull others up instead of crushing their juniors. Coz, however much you push your case, if the right ppl are not aware, its going to all come to zero. As a society, we have to depend on each other, and right pull and push is important. when to help n when to leave alone are all important decisions to be made by seniors.
