to inculcate active listening one should "participate" "Ask Questions" "re-phrase what is understood".
To keep silence is the best way while listening to others & it help you to become a good listener. I support idea of Mr. Dhingra Sir.
Dear pervara, Unless you have the patience to listen silently, how one can expect to paraphrase the same and observe criteria of encoding and decoding when not listened properly?

Differentiating Sounds :* One of the most effective methods for teaching listening skills to children is to use a simple game format, such as "name that sound." To the entire class or smaller groups, play recordings of everyday sounds such as birds singing, traffic noise, musical instruments and voices. This makes a worthwhile discrimination-through-listening activity for students. Distractions should be kept at a minimum during this activity. Listening with their eyes closed encourages better listening in children and improves their recognition and discrimination skills. Participate in Storytelling: * Storytelling activities also encourage students to listen intently in order to participate. For example, the teacher writes a sentence on the board and students take turns orally adding to the story. Children must repeat the previous part of the story and then add their own. Focus and concentration are required in order for the activity to be successful. |

Good points Mr.Manish Kumar,
Yes Manish I agree with your point of view on the subject. very practical and being practiced in many interiors of our country.
|
|
It seems like an easy skill to learn, but takes some practice to master. Conversation happens in turns, each person taking a turn to listen and a turn to speak or to respond. It shows respect for the other person when you use your "speaking turn" to show you have been listening and not just to say something new. They then have a chance to correct your understanding, affirm it, or embellish on it. |

I agree with Muhammad.. We need to go back and put our mind into what was said and what it actually meant.
|
|
As you have rightly shared Salman, one does need to step back and paraphrase the same. Encoding and decoding is the main criteria.
For instance listening is important in Social Media as well. It is critical that one listens.Listening is to understand and comprehend. 'Hearing words' is different from 'listening in'

One must have good ears to go to the extent of depth of any kind of communication, secondly, following the proper diction and pronounciation will add to your listening capabilities. concentrate on the stress made on words and alphabets. I would definetly say its an art one must possess in this communication world with keen listening power. one must go to an extent to see the sound rather than hear it and then reciprocate

The first and foremost thing is not interrupt the person who is talking to you, listen to him fully make notes if necessary, jot down the questions, doubts etc after the person stops, you can raise the doubts, questions asking him not to interrupt while you are raising your doubts and queries

Concentration on conversation- By not letting your mind wander while somebody is speaking
|
|
Here I think that when somebody is speaking then it is utmost important that we should not let our mind wander on other thoughts..Concentration of the conversation is very important and it is really difficult as our mind is very wanders by nature and we lose interest very easily..it is very important we remind our self that we are listening to very important topic and how important is is going to be. And even if we lose interest in between, we can easily go back...starting from there.

Most people tend calculate what they have to speak next rather than focusing on what the other person is speaking now..... leading to a divided concentration
Similarly many also tend to start analysing whether wht is said is 'right or wrong' making it difficult to focus on what the person is exactly saying...
Ur views please....

If both sides involved in a conversation are interested in what they're talking about, active listening skill comes naturally.

Human beings are social animals. Its very difficult to be dumb-founded! If you were to learn something new, you need to unlearn what you know about the topic, then only you will listen to others! Listening is a very tough task without interruption, as we tend to throw our prowess every now and then to prove a point, which gets triggered automatically.

Silence can speak a lot if you have a patience. There is difference between hear and listen. When there is pin drop silence u can hear very well, but u won't remember it for a long time. But listening require a interest and interest make that listening absorbed into the mind.
