A communication gap between employee and employers leads to slow progress of the company. There should be proper to and fro conversation for a healthy relationship between employee and the employer. How can the communication gap be reduced.

Employers should take an initiative

idea posted by Renne Sharma HR Analyst, ABC Consulting

An employer always tends to use louder tone than the employee. An employee never feels comfortable while communicating. Sometimes the employers also tend to scold the employees which should not be the case.

I also agree with Rohit that employer should coduct regular meetings with their employees but the question is that is there time to have such meetings in organizations....So there should be a a system through which an employer can praise and talk with the employees and give them values as people not as a worker....

The tone and content of communication should reflect care, demonstrate commitment, ensure consistency and speak through coherence and clarity.Identify the cause of the crisis.Make full use of verbal, written and electronic communications channels.Define and take account of attitudes and likely behavior of all those who have an interest in or concern about the crisis.

I WANNA ADD LITTLE MORE.

TALKING WITH THEM ONCE IN A WEEK WILL ENHANCE RESPECT FOR AN

EMPLOYER  AND WHEN TALKING TO THEM IN A MEETING PROVIDE SOME

SNACKS, COFFEE OR SOFT DRINK OR WHATEVER THEY LIKE.

MOREOVER THAN THE ABOVE, THERE SHOULD BE A WIDE GRIN WHEN

TALKING TO THEM (IF POSSIBLE BURST LAUGH, IF NECESSARY), ITS JUST A

WAY TO MAKE THEM FEEL THAT AN EMPLOYER IS VERY MUCH CURIOUS TO

KNOW THEIR PROBLEMS (DOES NOT MEAN TO BE SARCASTIC).

AN EMPLOYER WILL ALWAYS BE AT GOOD TERMS IF ABOVE POINTS ARE USED

IN AN OFFICE, IT HELPS AN EMPLOYER WORK PEACEFULLY AS LONG AS

HE/SHE WORKS IN A COMPANY.  EMPLOYEES NOT ONLY FEEL HAPPY AS

LONG AS AN EMPLOYER RULED THE ROOST, BUT WEEP WHEN SUCH

EMPLOYER LEAVES THE COMPANY.

I HAVE SEEN SUCH A CASE, IT WORKS THAN THE REST OF THE IDEAS.

Information Sharing

idea posted by Nitin Jagdale Lead Human Resources

Information Sharing.

Information plays a very important and vital role for any communication and I personally believe that the same if not taken care is majorly responsible for existance of communication gap.

Below are my views pertaining to IT industry only. There are many reasons for communication gap and also it depends to size of organization.

1. Small organization (0-300 strength) : We can't really see a communication gap in small industries as management people are in touch with employees. Most of time they speak to employees through regular meetings with respective team leaders or team managers.

Communication Gap observed : Employees in such organizations are all less experienced which are mainly thinking about growth in technical and financial terms and tend to think in direction of fast money with hard work, this helps organization leaders to exploit employees and tend to stretch their working hours. This results in communication gap as then the organization looks more towards money making rather than a reknown organization.

Bridging Gap : Organization leaders should come ahead and speak to employees at regular intervals probably once in every week or fortnight. Not only this however the leaders should share all the success and failures of organization. They should show a more of professional behavior rather, should implement some very small events within the organization and listen to new ideas or aspirations or expectations of employees. In case the expectations can't be fulfilled then a proper reasoning should be provided. Unless an employee is not satisfied to an extent communication gap will be there.

ps : continued in next post...

{continued with above...}

2. Mid Sized organization (300 - 5000) : These organizations achieve bridging the communication gap through policies and processes implicated in the organization. The leaders of organization do not have time at regular intervals to interact with employees. In such organization though the organization structure might look small at times however to follow the hierarchy for communication an information will seek more time as hurdles are more. Hence the leaders of organizations bridge this communication gap through activities supporting to their respective policies and recreation programmme.

Bridging gap :

       - Defining policies with regards to employee orientation

       - Organizing events and social gatherings to provide a platform for interaction

       - Organizing events wherein management/leaders/Co-founders comes on the dice and discuss about the growth path of organization since inception and future goals.

3. Large organization (5000 & above) : You can not find a communication gap as such in large organization because I believe communication gap itself in such big organization means not following the communication protocol :). These large organization has already experienced so many case studies and information due to which they design their policies, processes, rules & regulation accordingly.

Bridging gap : I do not conclude a communication gap in this section however the communication gap encountered in such organization are individual driven and not organization. As you will find a clear goal, process and protocol to achieve goals.

Conclusion for bridging Gap :

          - Sharing information through right medium and at right time.

          - Clearly defining goals and communicating the same among team.

          - Listening and providing utmost attention to new ideas and initiative.

          - Defining transperant policies and processes along with reprimends for non-adherence of defined policies and processes.

PS : Aforementioned information and views are my personal views and hence I also regret in case any or either of individual gets hurt because of it.

There are many ways to reduce communication gap. In any organization , the coomunication gap is major factor to crate lot of problem. So, i think any organization should develop good communication system. Communication always should simple and transperant so that it can not create problem. And employee feel satisfaction. The other thing i would like to add that politics also important factor and effect to employee. Because hierarchy wise many employee are communicate different different and employees are facing trouble. So communication system should develop. Communication is important as like sales, HR, Finance etc..Thanks Ms.Renne for referal...

In the hierarchy whatever may be the position one should shed out his authority and mingle with each and every member of the organisation. The personal contact between the members and the persons on top of the hierarchy shall be way of communication. A message can be communicated through any form but a message communicated in person will be the best choice. The interaction shall be beyond the positions. After all we all human beings. Value the perception of each member. Participative decision making instills the responsibility in the minds of the members of the organisation. Create a friendly environment at work place.

Grievance Redressal Mechanism

idea posted by Kamal Dave Managing Partner, Cyberjuris - Law Firm

There could always be difference of opinion and when the opinion shape up to be brittle wall then chances are that it may break. Thus a mechanism to redress grievances should exist for maintaining harmony between employer and employees.

idea posted by Sujith Kumar S Sr Technical Recruiter, AIM PLUS Staffing
This can be reduced only when the employee take more care of his or her employer in all means of ways , most of the cases the employers scold the employees due to some or the other reason but at the same time employee should know what is to be done for this i would suggest to have a pot lunch in the office or a team outing to understand each other in proper respective ways

idea posted by kanukurthy sudershanrao Operations Manager, Andhra Bank
In most of the meetings conducted by the employer it is always one way communication from top to bottom, the employer does not take no/difficuties expressed by the employees. any employee coming up with an answer is looked down and frowned likely to be replaced. There is no platform for discussions it is always " I will tell you, you listen and do it dont discuss about problems" is the attitude of the employers generally.

Periodical Meetings

idea posted by S. Muralidharan Executive Director, Knowledge Foundation & Campus Around the Corner
Periodical meetings, once in a fortnight or a month, between the employees and employers to discuss about the growth of the company and how the employees are integral part to achieve the target, and discuss about grievances, etc. should be the only way to bring about healthy atmosphere in the organisation. An outing with the employees once in three months to a nearby resort could be another way to reduce the communication gap.

So that even a peon can also say that my CEO knows me well and he gave me thanks last time and every body knows that in my whole organization. Coz recognition is most important than a rewards as rewards can be given by any one who doesn't know the person but if u personally praise and appreciate any one or even thanks him, it touches his sentimental nerve.
