Here are some facts about the environmental impact of plastic bags:

  1. Plastic bags cause over 100,000 sea turtle and other marine animal deaths every year when animals mistaken them for food
  2. The manufacture of plastic bags add tonnes of carbon emissions into the air annually
  3. In the UK, banning plastic bags would be the equivalent of taking 18,000 cars off the roads each year
  4. Between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year
  5. Approximately 60 - 100 million barrels of oil are required to make the world’s plastic bags each year
  6. Most plastic bags take over 400 years to biodegrade. Some figures indicate that plastic bags could take over 1000 years to break down. (I guess nobody will live long enough to find out!). This means not one plastic bag has ever naturally biodegraded.
  7. China uses around 3 billion plastic bags each day!
  8. In the UK, each person uses around 220 plastic bags each year
  9. Around 500,000 plastic bags are collected during Clean Up Australia Day each year. Clean Up Australia Day is a nationwide initiative to get as many members of the public to get out and pick up litter from their local areas. Unfortunately, each year in Australia approximately 50 million plastic bags end up as litter.

Ban the manufactures

Very simple when the government doesn't want us to use plastic why are they allowing companies to produce it. Ban it and produce recyclable carry bags.

Definetly no other options suits my thoughts. If some thing will be available in the market people will look only abt their convenience. So, these things should not just banned but productions of such things should be treated as some punishable offence.

Plastic bags usage needs to be reduced and finally it needs to be replaced by bags made from other environmentally friendly material.

Thanks for the referral, Sankaran....

once an invention comes in society & got well accepted it will be hard to eleminate it, rather to control through regulation, though education & information are critically imp. & effective, it will be prudent to search the methods to bio-degrade it. what max. will be needed just to properly collect & transported to the places where it has to be disposed.

As you know, there is nothing which can replace the use of plastic bags. So by reusing the plastic bags help a lot in controlling this menace. I request each and every individual to reuse or if possible avoid the use of plastic bags.

The manufacturers earn the government revenue. So they will not be banned. Everyone should be aware of the harm caused and ban the polythene from their house. That would be enough for starters.
