Access Internet through a password protected router be it home or
office. Every router comes pre-configured with a standard password, and
hackers know this. This makes it very easy for hackers to simply gain
access into your network, gain control over its administrative rights
and use your network and computer the way they want.

Yes, overall security is the most important thig even in home or office network, might be the implimentation is different depending according to scenario.
Secuirty measurement never breaks down, day by day it icrease as the implimentation or technology increases and this for the cause of hacking. as much as your data is important that much of security is need, if it accessible from your home network you have to secure that might be wi-fi or VPN. and for the router the security is different......so as the technology or accessible device changes the procedure or method too changes but security concern never changes.
Based on the method or device the procedure changes but the matter is only of security.
I've put together a few simple things that anyone can do to secre their WLAN.
Most techniques are fairly simple and do not require a P.Hd in I.T. to implement. I've put the instructions on my Blog, http://ivansmusings.com/?cat=51 copy and paste this link into your Browser and take a look.
Add your comments as well, I'd sure appreciate it.
Yes, I do agree with this. In fact I have implemented this after reading this article. I have a personal router in my house which serves my 2 laptops, 1 PC and my mobile. I have implemented a secure access for my router. Thanks a lot for the idea.

Step 1: Change the Default Password of Modem / Router |

sorry, but you have copied the steps from the link given by Ivan Bayross, CEO/MD/Director, Doss Software Solution LINK http://ivansmusings.com/?cat=51
this doesnt seem good when professional statements of reputed person are over ruled.
According to me a Router is a device that determine the optimal path along which network traffic should be forwarded. Routers allow different networks to communicate with each other. They forward packets from one network to another based on network layer information, but whereas a gateway can interpret and translate the different protocols that are used on two distinct networks. Unlike routers that successfully connect networks with protocols that are similar, a gateway perform an application layer conversion of information from one protocol to another...Hope this helps.
Change the password
Change this administrator password on the router from time to time like
you should change any other password so as to minimise the risk to your
network.
How you change your password varies from router to router. There are
several sites on the Net (even sites of the company that owns the brand
of router you use) which will tell you how to go about changing the
password of your router. If the task is still insurmountable, call up
your ISP to understand the process. But remember not to have a wireless
network without password.
For any further clarifications do contact me.
Here are some of the things you can do to protect your wireless network:
1) Secure your wireless router or access point administration interface
2) Don't broadcast your SSID
3) Enable WPA encryption instead of WEP
4) Remember that WEP is better than nothing
5) Use MAC filtering for access control
6) Reduce your WLAN transmitter power
7) Disable remote administration
Ya neeraj,
This idea looks more convincing along with the normal 64 bit encryption, bcoz most of the times there seems to be some compatibility issue with the 128 bit encryption and Vista.
i think the best way to secure ur wireless is by providing mac addressof ur system to the router. to get the mac addres of the system run GETMAC command in command prompt and get the physical addres from there and provide the mac address in the acces list table of the wireless router after that only those user will be allowed whose physical address is available in the list

Use your network only when it is required. All you need to do is to just turn off your router when you are not using your network. Switch it on only when needed and then switch it off. At least this will make sure that no intruder is able to hack your system when you are away & can't do anything. |

One should not even leave the computer, with mail logged IN or blue tooth/ wireless enabled all the time. this could be dangerous if you have a tout friend around. Its not the question of not trusting anybody but need to be careful. Same is much more dangerous if you are using Net on Mobile phones. Beware...

All Wireless devices support some form of encryption. Encryption
technology scrambles messages sent over the air and ensures that they
cannot be intercepted by hackers. Several encryption technologies exist
for wireless communication today. WPA is the strongest commonly
available encryption technology for home devices, however, WEP can also
be used.

I agree turn on the WEP/WPA encryption on your router, It would be better if we choose 128 bit encrption rather than 64 bit encryption, For that we have to go to the router default page, and there in the wireless settings set the encryption, Also it would be better that we change the Channel from default 6 to 9 or 11.

HI all, This side Baljeet ISngh from Delhi. where i was working they are using a certificate for IE & other Explorers without that certificate nobody can access the Wi-Fi router I guess this option is also a good option to safe our network and help our govt. to |

You need not always broadcast your router so that others know about it. Its you who want to use and you know you have one but why letting others know you are broadcasting your wifi. Better disable the broadcasting of you router. for details you can check your manual . For Linksys router, instructions to disable SSID broadcast are here, |

u r absolute rite . i personally is a strong believer in internet security aspects as well against casual usage of LAN / Wi-fi systems . but becuz of lack of knowledge and of course hectic timelines , ppl overlook this aspect and behave reactively rather than proactive . I m among them as well , though i belong to systems and enterprise IT infrastructure domain , proffessionally
I am myself free to discuss any scenario in terms of information security management not gr t wi- fi though |

i m not in favour of this idea as many medium and large enterprises have their services offered for their partners and clients round the clock for 365 days , which is why they have redundancy
investing in good practises , stong IT policy , and deploying firewalls and IDS would help |

u r rite . i m a strong believer in infosec myself and against casual usage of LAN and wi-fi systems leading info sec breach and eventualy costly mistakes and high overhead of recovery users need to be educated out of practise , rather than doing things reactively
feel free to discuss any technical scenarios . Myself from enterprise IT infrastructure and networks domain , proffessionaly

make Strong password with symbollic letters and make some protocol of ports which you not use in web surffing and new way to protect our network by hiding ssid of our network and Block the Simple shaing of default drives and must guest account is disable to protect system and ARP protocol is next feauture problem of attack of pinging
