According to me this is very important, if one's desire is to make a name in the world of media depends on their ability to find leads which is unavailable to other professionals. Television stations, newspapers and magazines need exclusive stories to compete against other outlets in competitive markets. So success in media jobs relies on developing discrete and confidential relationships with people inside government agencies, businesses and entertainment with greater information than you possess. so this will help one to succeed in the media job......So what are the others..........

Networking & PR building is the surviving mantra as well as success mantra in media.

I believe that the most important aspect of success in media job is networking. It is networking with your sources as well as other media professionals which is finally going to decide your fate. Many a times, very successful media professionals write atrocious copy which has to be reworked, but if you are well connected, nobody can raise a finger or harm you in any which way.
I also have a strong belief that Networking is the only trait which will take a media person on a path of success as said by AYAN.

Knowing the right people, enticing them with juicy tid bits and keeping the spark alive in the relationship will ensure that you get juicy tidbits in return, calls at the oddest hours to let you in on that tiny detail and of course passes to the most happening parties in town.... The growth of reportage and broadcasting into new media means that multimedia skills are necessary for any professional. A newspaper writer needs to know how to blog, take photos and use HTML in order to turn print-only documents into multimedia stories. Most media jobs require presentations, pitch meetings and other situations where the use of presentation equipment is necessary. Your ability to break down complex stories into a 15-second pitch means that you can turn a full-page story into a one-column article.

I also feel that this is a trait necessary to suceed in the media job. It not only makes your job easy but at the same time increases the quality of your work.

Reporters, broadcasters and writers need to develop trustworthy support networks to succeed in media jobs. A good relationship with production staff, editors and interns can ease the pressure of daily deadlines. Your ability to call up a local official and an expert on a specific issue without setting up an appointment will help you get information quickly without hearing filtered information at press conferences. A reporter needs to smooth out as many paths in the community as possible to get down to the bottom of potential stories.
