Layoffs, Job cuts: This is what we have seen in the year 2008 in companies like Jet Airways, Satyam, IBM, TCS etc..
Indian firms are likely to lay off a quarter of their employees in the next 10 days (Nov 2008).We can be one of them.

How can we survive during layoff???

Demonstrate Your Value

idea posted by Chanasekhar Darbha HR Manager, Capgemini
If you think your worth a lot for the company then do anything to show your manager the value that you provide and how much hard their job will be without you, what important part you play in the company. This might make them have a re-look at their decision to lay off you.

In today's competitive world I believe regular brushing up of your existing skills and acquisition of new ones and adding up more education can be of great help. Also networking sites like LinkedIn are a boon to the society. Showcase your strengths by means of presentations, whitepapers etc.

Cost cutting

idea posted by Jyoti Kapoor HR Manager, Cybage Software
Everyone believes that charity begins at home and I believe that cost cutting too should begin from home. It is better you start doing your own laundry, utensils and ironing. You may feel a bit odd in the beginning but the amount you will save every month will come as a huge relief till you are placed into some other job. Put an hold on unnecessary expenditure, cut cost where ever possible.

we must not overburden ourselves with monetary commitments and relax some of our extra costs so that we might find ourselves in a better half and see through this phase . i beleive that excess cost cutting at every walk of life will result in more unemployment as their must be enough liquidity in the market. so try to spend at the right places.

Look out for a brighter future..

This phase will pass away and the best way to handle it would be to move on with your life. Seek for better opportunities with the belief that you will find it. This is not mere motivation. If you permit thoughts of gloom and doom conquer your mind, it will only make things worse.

Refuse to allow any phase affect your composure and expect a positive outcome from it all. Move on and keep that smile for the world will recover from this recession and so will you.

As an individual always look for the brighter side of life and pathway

- You may want to complete the graduate which is incomplete

- You may want to certify yourself with higher qualification

- You may want to do even the small certification course which is been pending due to various concern

- you may want to look at your expenditure list and do SWOT

- Cut down or remove those expenditure for the next one year

- do not get into any new commitment

- look into various other opportunities

Severance packages

idea posted by Kuldeep Sharma HR Manager, Keane
Do a research and find out what kind of severance packages your company has offered in the past. Negotiate with your employer to get a good severance package. This amount which you get from severance packages ,if planned and spent productively can help you cope financially till the time you get another job.
