A hostile workplace is also referred to as an "offensive work environment" or "abusive work environment." An employee in a hostile work environment may become so stressed that she becomes reluctant to go to work and her productivity declines. In order to maintain your employment, it is critical to learn how to survive in this environment.

So, how to survive in a hostile environment??

Be Strong

idea posted by ALEX FERNANDES HR Manager, Spectrum consultancy ltd

Develop internal strength. A hostile workplace may tempt you to behave like those causing it. Resist imitating their behavior as this only intensifies the situation. Try to contain yourself when problems arise by taking deep breaths and counting to ten, or taking a few minutes to meditate in private. No matter what, do not stoop to the harasser's level.

People will provoke you and cause trouble for you. But never show them you are affected. Be diplomatic, keep a smile and don't budge. And when everything fails, find another job.

Use training to get more in-demand skills

Use training to get more in-demand skills in terms of what profession you are choosing. This may help increase your value in your organization, but even when it doesn't it will help you move to another organization.

Separate Business From Pleasure

idea posted by Priyanka Dixit HR Executive, Leading IT services

Separate business and pleasure. It is possible to gain good friends at work. But if you are working in a hostile workplace where it is difficult to know whom to trust, it is best to stick to business only.

Be pleasant, professional and courteous, but maintain a certain distance that lets others know you are there only to work.

This is one good and practical approach.

But, don't you think that touch me not  attitude   leads to certain amount of  TENSION at work place??

Work place - a second home

idea posted by Amba Prasad G S Business Analyst, Sales & Distribution

A workplace is a conglomeration of various individuals belonging to various bacckgrounds.  It is very rare that a hostile atmosphere dwells in workplaces.  Everybody is paid to do their work and be responsible to their job.  This is an ideal situation.

As per the discussion, (if) in a company where in such practices exist -         1. Be yourself and do not get in to sensitive discussions/arguements/debates etc., 2. Do not give room for any sort of controversy in your work/office etiquette.  3. Do not form any anti-groups and go against others.  4. Maintain a business/formal relationship with everybody in the office - so that you do not have anybody against you (just saying a 'hello' will not hurt you)  5. Last, but not the least, mind your own business and do not interfere or poke your nose into others affairs (you are there to work for yourself, not become a social worker).

You all must be surprised why I called this  idea ''Work place - a second home''.  Even at our home, all the members of the family are not of the same mentality and understanding.  There are minor/major differences when there is a group.  Do we throw out a family member for his mistakes.  Do we not digest his/her mistakes, come to an understanding and try to resolve problems amongst ourselves.  There are instances wherein a brother and a sister have not spoken to each other because of a difference of opinion.  But, does that mean that they try to harm each other.  Ultimately, the time we spend in the office is more than the time we spend with our families.  Why do we need controversies there??  If you are forced into situations, you have all the smartness to escape from the situation with out any harm (as you did with your father/elder sibling during the college days).

All in all have a lot of fun working and take care of your furture and grow up in life.  Make your office a place to learn and grow.

It is better to keep urself out of trouble by not indulgin in anybody's personal matters coz once u get caught in such things there is no way out. one funny comment not meant to hurt any one may b twisted and presented against u as an evidence. so to avoid all such thing MIND UR BUSINESS.
