It is difficult for any hospital to predict which patients will default. Credibility of a patient cannot be ascertained and law doesn't provide any basic guideliens / dos and don'ts to ascertain patient's credibility. It is very sad that hospitals provide care to the sick and needy without certainity of realising its dues. Though the phenomenon is not with all patients but certain classes of patients. There's no provision in india to ensure payments for services rendered. As a matter of fact as per guidelines and other ruling by consumer courts it is not possible to refuse treatment to patients on financial grounds. Therefore every hospital is channelising payment follow up and recovery as an integral part of its activity with a only hope to realise payments without any default. We take few basic steps as permitted and desired
1. Communicate with patients about the expense in all cases
2. Provide written estimate with aim to generate transperancy
3. Communicate line of treatment and documentation and any change thereof
4. Update costs and advance submitted and monitor credit limits, in case it exceeds talk to patients.
By taking all such steps we have been able to ensure reduced payment defaults.

Before admitting the patient in the hospital just taking the signature of the consult person stating that these are the facilities and the kid of treatment we are going to provide to the patient so that the consult person is liable to pay the prescribed amount by the hospital |

Hi Sunil, Good question, according to me we should change the mind of the people regarding the hospital bills. People think that the hospitals are charging more amount, which they feel it is too much. This is because of the few hospitals who really charge more and that affects all the hospital. Explain the people the value of the medicine and why it cost that much. When they understand, no doubt they will be ready to pay it. |
