The fast growing ubiquitous infrastructure technologies are capable of improving current urban management and infrastructure planning and development capabilities. So use manufacturing products in such a way that it ensure minimum impact on the environment, for example through their lifetime energy efficiency or resource use, while maintaining their functional qualities and safety for consumers. Apart from afforestation how urban infrastructure can be eco- friendly?

Waste management

idea posted by Nand Jha Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

Waste is becoming a major public health and environmental concern in urban areas of many developing countries. Managing domestic, industrial and commercial waste has traditionally consisted of collection, followed by disposal. Depending upon the type of waste and the area, a level of processing may follow collection. There are many waste management techniques like ocean dumping, land fill and recycling.

i completely agree with the above ideas, i would like to add, effective utilization of electrical and electronic gadjets will contribute too. The use of energy efficient products must be emphasised, it may sound a bit out of line, but the truth is with use of energy efficient products and appropriate usage of electric products (by appropriate i mean ,using it only when it is necessary ) reduces the energy consumption by significant amount as " 1 UNIT SAVED BY CONSUMERS IS APPROX  EQUIVALENT OF SAVING 2 UNITS ON THE GENERATING SIDE"

For people who can afford , the idea of having roof top gardens is not a bad one as it adds both aesthetic and environmental value .

Nowdays plastic waste is of bigger concern. we need to stress more on its prsent snd future effects. . with the help of rag pickers  the waste plastic can be collected, and after this it can be cleaned and shredded into small pieces.

futher it can be  mixed with the hot bitumen-aggregate mix , and can be laid on the roads...for this there are some companies which are doing this ( K .K POLYFLEX) .

I agree with the views expressed. I think we have to go to the fundamentals of SWM i.e., Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. Initiatives like door-to-door collection, source segregation, localized composting of biodegradable waste, encouraging recycling of plastics, paper, glass, leather, packaging material, reusing the inerts like building debris etc. for road sub-base construction, using latest appropriate vehicles for waste transportation, establishing transfer stations if the distance to landfill exceeds about 15 km, recovery of methane, and energy through biomethanation, waste to energy plants etc. wil conribute to sustanable SWM. The least amount of garbage i.e., only inerts like rubbish, rejects, building debris (after using in road subbase construction) should alone go to the landfill. Thus, the life of the landfill also increases and thus the capital costs and maintenance of transport fleet and of landfill.

Further, effective O&M of assets like waste bins, transport fleet, processing plants and landfills will go a long way in reducing costs and in establishing a sustainable, integrated SWM system.

Follow a good systematic approach like TERI GRIHA or LEED

idea posted by Satish Kumar Assistant Manager - Green Building

Yes i agress with the other listed 3 points but we need to follow the soal process to make eco-friendly. Our NBC, and other guildlines are a bit old and much more eco-friendly process is not defined. Starting from the urban planning, we need to transplant or relocate the previous trees, proper usage and protectation of top soil, proper drainage design, proper design of the electrical, air conditioning system. Still we follow old rule of water requirement per peron per day i.e. 45 l/day/person, still we design our electrical equipment load requirement keeping 220 V, still we want to outsource the carpet or tiles from US or other foreign country, all our design are very correct but it is on the highest side. We need minor correction but it will give the major saving.

Minimizing of artifical light and more use of natural light is the best approach to any eco-friendly building w.r.t. to slight design change and not w.r.t any HVAC, Electrical design.

Proper internal and external shade, skylight, light pipe and nos. of method are there to simply minimize the total heat load calculation and thus overall energy consumption of the building at the predesign or planning stage.

All you need to do, follow TERI or LEED, do Enegy Modeling & Lighting Simulation

Proper Drainage

idea posted by Anjali Bhatia Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

Urban people face a lot of problems because of bad drainage facilities. The city waters flows throw many drains and when they are blocked because of any case, it irritates the users for 3-4 days till they register a complaint. There are many manholes and drains uncovered which becomes a breed hub for harmful insects. Government should take care for this problem...

inclusive planning to take care of growing slum (poor) population in urban slums

idea posted by gonuguntla kondala rao Superinending Engineer (Slum Development), Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas, Govt. of AP, Hyderabad.

Urban planning needs to be more inclusive to cater to the spatial requirements of the growing urban poor migrating from rural and other areas in search of livelihoods and for their honourable and quality life. A healthy and enlightened slum dweller living in an environmentally sound space will contribute to national growth. . Environmental and social Infrastructre with appropriate environmentally sustainable technologies  will help improve their quality of life. Some subsidies are of course needed for him for a few years to establish himself and to improve his living standards and quality of life. Gradually, the subsidy element can be minimized to make him self reliant. Establishing community structures and building their capacities to take care of themselves like the rban Self Help Groups in Andhra Pradesh may contribute a lot. The planning function needs to be pro-poor and inclusive to realize this dream.

The conversion of slums to habitable tenements is a must for Indian cities. However, adequate eligibility criteria need to be frozen, so that the conversion of slums to rehab tenements does not become a racket.

A few more

idea posted by KALIYAMOORTHY Oil & Gas Area Coordinator, Undisclosed

A few  more are:-

  • A Community based Bio-gas production center in each location, Gas so produced can be distributed to them equally. Food, Vegetables, Fruits wastes can be used for conversion.Individual are to deposit.
  • Community based Solar station in each locality to cop up with power cuts.
  • Regular testing, inspection of Drinking water without fail.
  • Good drainage for rain water. No stagnation of water due to heavy rain fall.
  • Segregated & classified wastes to be disposed off either  by Municipality or NGO working over there. EVEN A SMALL AMOUNT OF MONEY CAN BE COLLECTED FOR THIS SERVICE  BUT NOT TAXING TOO MUCH.
  • Land fill & Incineration points are located well away from dwelling points.
  • Collect polythene material separately & recycle or dispose off as advised.

Its time to act rather than giving ideas. we have all the ideas for the questions but noboady is taking initiative to act. Reuse, recyle, reduce, recover is good idea there are some things which we can "avoid" like use of plastic bags

vertical growth is to be encouraged. compound wall should be avoided. open space should be made common to all.(to be shared).safety and security is the prime concern of the government .ground area occupied by building should be limited to 50% ata particular location.buildup area should be shared by adjacent owners of land and open area should be made common to all .7/ 24 security should be given by government.cleanliness ,waste management, dring water facility, lighting yard, road maintenance, landscaping etc should be done by government from taxing occupants.35% of the area should be made green and only 15% area should be used for road ,treatment plant, drain, water storage, power distribution etc.conservation area should be totally prevented from construction e.g. water storage, farm lands etc. These area should, be demarked and its surrounding with equal area should be notified for the survival of domestic animals, pets etc.Urban ,metro area should be free from domestic animals

idea posted by Vinod Nakra Head/VP/GM-Corporate Advisory, Larsen & Toubro Ltd
Urban agglomerates should take leaf from rural settlements as regards sustaianble infrastructure. Whereas the former are highly wasteful in their approach, the latter are forced to consume less than it can produce and rely on thrift while usnig the depleting non-renewable resources. Our urban centres have become chaotic and immune, thanks to the mad race aimded at the target of 7-8% growth rate. Every urbanite wants to move in a fuel guzzler-independent two wheeler/car in the absence of an efficient and sustaianble mass transportation system or more eco friendly individual conveyance. Much liquid waste is thrown down the sewage system/open nullas in the absence of any strict laws aimed at curbing waste like recycling of water and conservation. Soild waste is simply dumped at the doorstep of the colony/neingbourhood only to be further deumped in the landfills causing serious drainage problems. Rain water is allowed to run-off and get evaporated/percolated in tha bsence of any grand master plan aimed at water haresting at each levele/household. The list is endless. We need to come out of our comfort zone and change our prioities. Well planned rural setlements will go along way in mitigating the damage to the environment being wreaked in the name of growth which is highly un sustainable to say the least.
