There is no Indian policy document examining waste as part of a cycle of production-consumption-recovery or perceives waste through a prism of overall sustainability. Today's manufacturing sector is facing a huge problem in lack of waste management. In urban India, it is likely to face a massive waste disposal problem in the coming years.

Today, the problem of waste is seen as one of cleaning and is disposed as rubbish. Increasing urban migration and a high density of population will make waste management a difficult issue to handle in the near future, if a new paradigm for approaching it is not created.

So users, how do you think waste management should be done in a manufacturing sector?

Products with recycled-content should be promoted

idea posted by Isha Verma Sales/BD Manager, Larsen & Toubro

Making products with recycled-content conserves natural resources, creates good public relations, and can reduce purchasing costs. Government should try to foster the development of post-consumer recycled-content products by providing technical and financial assistance programs, and requiring government agencies to purchase products made with specific percentages of recycled content when readily available.

I would like to add that in addition to looking at products , we should also look at the process itself.

For instance , there are industries where heat is a waste product. With the use of recuperators , this waste heat can be used to heat up water or any other material which needs to be heated up , thus recovering some amount of energy.

In all this , I think the government should support such initiatives by industry , and give either duty exemptions for such equipment , or give some kind of tax benefits for installation of such equipment.

Yes the government should take svere steps for this, In kerala the goverment has imposed a rule that only the plastic bags which have the government seal can be sold. those bags can be recycled. Like this in every product they should impose theses rules.

yes the government should provide subsidiaries to the recycling industries, and the new generation in India should focus on how to develop new technologies in recycling process, basically in automotive sectors instead of using new raw materials we can use the spare parts of old vehicles by remodeling it.And we can also use the components of old vehicles which are in good working conditions from abandoned vehicles. In this way we can reduce the production cost, material cost and labor cost.

Waste management

idea posted by Rakesh K Swarnkar Senior Consultant(Chemical),

Waste management is a burning topic of the country like India in this world.

The only step to be followed by  every citizen is to minimize the production of waste materials in the all type of manufacturing industries as a worker and as well as a manager of the industry.  Before disposal of these waste product recycalble material would be segregated for reprocessinf and cost minimazation of the unit. Then biodegradable and nonbiodegradable waste material should separed for the further treatment.

Waste management is done by default as a cost saving measure by recycling in industries of repute. CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) has special wing for waste management. CPCB encourages industries through subsidies for managing the waste. But due to corruption in government all these regulations get diluted and no one follows the same. There are regulations but strict followup is required like in US and Europe.

Waste management is the collection, transport, processing, recycling or disposal, and monitoring of waste materials.[1] The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity.
Waste management is also carried out to recover resources from it. Waste management can involve solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive substances, with different methods and fields of expertise for each.Actually by good waste management we can acheive all the goals .which may be get by above five idea.

Proper Design also a good criteria.

idea posted by Prashant P. Kulkarni. Sr. Design Engineer, Saurabh Flexi Pack Systems pvt.ltd.

See if we are designing any machine/product ,then we have to know the process requirements at the time of conversion for raw material into machined product. Means if we know that ,what we are going to manufacture then make the design according to the processes that when it will go through the machining process the waste should be less than the previous one what we had got.

Target the origin

idea posted by Anees A.Quraishi Factory Head, Time Technoplast Ltd.

Practically there are two sorts of wastages:1) complete waste and 2) Recyclable waste.

1)      Target the origin: 80% of the waste generation is due to the machine, 10% is due to inefficient manpower/management and 10% is due to faulty process.

2)      If it is compulsory/byproduct, see possibly it can be used in the end of your job worker/ancillary manufacturing unit.

3)      Find possibility to reuse it in house. It can be recycle directly or can be with adding some material or process.

4)      Keep proper track record of the waste control.

5)      Aware the sub ordinate about waste control pin point the generation source and appreciate who come with new ideas to consume it.

I agree with Mr. Quraishi. The waste management for a refinery may be different from the waste management for a textile company , basically because of :

1.  The categories of waste which prevail in the different industries may be different

2.  The processes which introduce the waste may be different.

In all cases , prevention being better than cure , proper steps taken at the design stage or equipment ordering stage may reduce the magnitude of the problem. Use of the right technology may also help.

In certain cases , such as when dealing with radioactive materials , it is more a case of proper waste disposal , rather than trying to control waste.

The ISO 14000 series of standards are aimed at promoting care for environmental issues by industry , and waste management is just one aspect of this.

TO REDUCE WASTE DO FOLLOWING PROCEDURES.

1) USE PROPER SETTINGS AT THE TIME OF PRODUCTION.

2) REDUCE REJECTION

3) SET THE % OF USING THE RECYCLED MATERIAL

4) IF REJECTION WAS PRODUCED IT CAN BE RECYCLED IMIDIATELY AT THE TIME OF PRODUCTION RUN.

Proper awareness among manufacturing industries

idea posted by Abhijeet Kadian Sales/BD Manager, Bharat Heavy Electricals

Manufacturing sector industries should be made aware of the adverse environmental and financial impacts of waste disposal, combined with a rise in the number and extent of municipal recycling programs so that they do proper material (both in quality and quantity) use for their production and take proper care about the pattern and location of the disposal of the waste materials.

FORMULATING CODES

idea posted by Rohit Kumar Prajapati Procurement , Acme Telepower Ltd

Waste is the product which can not be eliminated coz if a reaction is gng on then ceratinly we will get the output & waste..........

so  we can reduce it by making some codes for them just lyk ASME,DIN,JIS codes & standrads though they are for produvts .bt we can formulate them for envirnment also.

made them mandatory for manufacturing sector & nt only for it for every sector.

Reduction in Waste through Paperless Administration

idea posted by Mark W Livingston Manager, Quality Systems, Auto Trade Ltd.

Good day!  The transformation of your administration departments into a paperless workplace will provide significant reductions of waste in your manufacturing facility.  Then if the steps you take in the administrative departments are migrated onto the productive floor, the reductions will be immense.  The easiest way to do this is to follow the 5S Principles of Japanese manufacturing principles.  Good luck and keep up the great work!

VARIUS STEP SUGGESTED ARE

1.Seggregation of waste material acoording to type of manufacturing unit

2. CLASSIFICATION OF  BIODEGRADABE AND NON BIODEGRADABLE

3. REPROCESSING OF cHEMICLA AND METALIC WASTE

4. CALCULATING MATERIAL BALANCE AND ENERGY BANACE IN MANUFACTURING PROCESS

5. STANDADISED THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS

6. CONDUCTING AWRENESS ANG TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR STAFF AND EXECUTIVES

7. ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT  SHOULD BE MUST  FOR EVERY SERVICE AND MANUFACTURING UNIT

The biotechnology is progressing a pace.A little change and a new product.bt genre. In metallurgical vocabulary, the process of returning to original state is continuing and ends there. This process of material should be further taken for incorporating in the manufacturing so that there is no waste.
