Obama's new Tax proposals to tax expenditure's by US Companies on availing Services from outside US from 2011 has been proposed to discourage outsourcing and contain the flight of Jobs to Other Countries. If Implemented, American Firms like IBM, Oracle, Microsoft could see upto an approx rise of 50% in the cost of outsourcing business processes to India if Prseident Barrack Obama's new Tax proposals are accepted.

Effect of Obamination on the already deteorating IT Industry, in the form of New tax Proposals from 2011!

As of today, Obama's new Tax proposals to tax expenditure's by US Companies on availing Services from outside US from 2011 has been proposed to discourage outsourcing and contain the flight of Jobs to Other Countries. If Implemented, American Firms like IBM, Oracle, Microsoft could see upto an approx rise of 50% in the cost of outsourcing business processes to India if Prseident Barrack Obama's new Tax proposals are accepted. While some argue that this setback on US based giants like IBM, Oracle & Microsoft et al. will affect IT & KPO, with lesser Impacts on R&D and ITES(BPO), if remains to see, if our markets can handle the already melting economy.

Even 10 years back, the effects wouldnt have been so drastic. But with IT companies paying High Salaries , it remains to be seen that the 24X7 Global Delivery (Onsite-Offshore) Model can stand on the basis of Trained Manpower and QOS alone. While some speculating that Indian IT Industry may become more price-competitive, ther's no doubt that, these news are only helping fume the recession! It remains to be seen, that when do we hit the point of desperation, what measures can Obama & the Indian IT Sector negotiate to, in order to achieve a balance in the Indian Economy!

Some say that these Tax burden's on Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, IBM, HP, Oracle, Dell will be a boon for companies like Infosys, TCS, WIpro, and the like. But judging by the trens, it remains to be seen that if a comparative price of an US employee is $80 an hour, and the price of an Indian Outsourcing Giant is in the range of $50-$75, then how willingly will these companies, opt for outsourcing, if at all!

Hi Deepesh,

Earlier when MNCs were approaching India, Indians were worried that the word GLOBALISATION will hit the local markets really hard. Now when Indians have learned to utilise the word GLOBALISATION, Mr Obama is changing the rules of the game.

Yes I m completely agree with you Deepesh that Obamination is al;ready affected IT industry
The fact is that the industry is already decelerating has perhaps added to the fears in major IT centers such as Bangalore. The Indian IT software and business process outsourcing industry earns about $60 billion, of which about $47 billion is exported. The industry directly employs about 2.2 million people.

Presenting his case for a change in the tax code in his recession-hit country, Mr. Obama said at present the regime levied a lower tax on a company investing in a Bangalore subsidiary than if it invested in Buffalo, New York

Obama's protectionist policy will do little, if anything at all, to end the increasing number of job losses in US or improve its economy. It will only reduce their competitiveness. It is a populist posture. Perhaps his (Obama's) intention was not the same. However, it sends a wrong message.

I dont think so, but it is a possibility that american industry will be more or less take a hit.First of all if we look at the bulk of Indians working in a BPO,it will be almost impossible for American MNC's to generate such huge bulk of skilled Americans.Indians are more committed to their work than americans and as they are paid in rupees which is significantly weaker as compared to US$,they are practically throwing their change at us.So even if Obama goes for a tax exemption for Outsourcing in US,i dont think it would be a big deal for MNC's as they would still earn more profits as compared to that in US.

Protectionism seems to be one area that Obama has gotten it all wrong. If you really extend Obama's argument, then by that token Indians too would reject American goods and services in order to support the 'local' economy and 'local' products. Imagine what that would do to the MNCs.

US companies outsourcing work actually helps create more value for those firms and shareholders. Remember, if the cost benefit analysis does not work out, American companies would rather NOT expand at all, rather than doing it unprofitably out of some notion of patriotism by creating expensive local jobs in Buffalo. ...
