There is so much construction that is going on these days that even the waste from these sites are also increasing day by day, what if we can use these wastes in a proper manner and not let it just go for any other landfill. Construction Waste Management is the practice of reducing the actual waste that go to the dump site. In fact, 80% of the wastes found in construction trash  are recyclable, one way or another with the likes of Wood, asphalt, concrete, bricks, metals, glass and even paint do offer several options for waste management.

Lack of knowledge of the cost implications of material & lack of feeling of ownership.

idea posted by DIleep kumar raroth construction manager, NSH

The main reason behind most of the wastes occuring in the construction industry is the lack of knowledge about the cost implication of the material. In most of the sites, the cost of the material is only known to the purchase department, a few in the finanace dept and those who hold the senior positions. The labours or even supervisory staff may not be really aware of the cost of the material and their properties. To reduce the wastage, the prime step is to educate all the concerned about the cost implication of the items.

Second is to instill a feeling of ownership in all the employees/workers so that they would have a self impossed discipline in using the materials. This will be done only by personal level interactions with staffs/workers at all levels, addressing their constraints and personal problems etc.

A moderate Human Resources  department along with the Administration department can do wonders in reducing the wastage in construction industry. If these departments are functioning to identify the real problems of workers, try so solve them to some extent, the wastes can be reduced to a considerable level.

first of all owner has to define correct "process owners" in every step/dept of construction.process owner need not be a civil engineer!! any ordinary worker can become a good resource if used properly.wastage starts from relationship between owner and worker.as common it is, autocracy cannot bring down wastage in any process, instead, try to make the actual user of the material to understand the importance of cost and productivity.one can implement small incentives calculating profits/savings.every day GENBA like workshops at construction sites which includes low calibre workmen will certainly help to make profits and control waste.

I quite agree that it is the bottomline which has to be made aware of the cost implications ie workers/supervisors. But the sales dept must coordinate with the site coz a lot of changes by clients is done in the latter half and already procurement of material is done , the stores is reckless to report of excess as it is least aware of the changes in the end resulting in lots of excess or wastage .so a proper coordination between planning, execution, sales and stores is required.

Today to reduce the waste a new concept in India (OLD at West) has got introduced. We must try to popularize this concept wherein the waste is / can be reused at the construction stage itself and hence reduce the waste generation and the disposal problem.

Mr.Rohit i definitely agree with you.The wastes which gets accumulated after all the construction work should be recycled so that it can be used somewhere else and it will also solve the disposal problem.

Bulk Material Wastage Control Key Factor...!!!

idea posted by M NITIN SHENOY, PMP, IPMA-D, CEng MICE Manager

It has been observed that from past experience that major wastage in construction sites are in Bulk Materials only (Cement, Sand, Aggregates, Bricks, Steel etc.).

Hence the only way to reduce wastage is through following measures:

  1. Scope of Work to be defined clearly
  2. Periodic plan for respective scope of work required
  3. Material Specification and Unit Consumption arrived
  4. Procurement cycle considering the Lead Time in line with periodic work plan prepared to followed up.
  5. Regular Reconciliation of Bulk material indented against work executed to arrive at wastages.
  6. Implement corrective and preventive measures

each point made by you is very true, if one can have the project done with keeping all the points that you have mentioned, there will be less construction waste at the site, so nice points Mr. shenoy

Recycling

idea posted by Shaju George Facilities/Construction Manager, IBS Software Services (P) Ltd

Recycling should be practiced wherever possible. Compared to other wastes like e-waste etc. construction waste management is easy and if done with proper planning, most of the materials can be reused for projects.

Recycle and reuse is the best method. In construction industry for example excavated earth, debris of concrete, waste from demolished is the major waste comparing to other material. These can be effectively reused in many places like refilling, road formation etc.,. whereas other waste like steel scrabs, switches, wires etc. can be easily recycled.

Reduce is basically what? preventing waste from appearing. So it helps if those building materials come in with preplanned sizes. Or you could design using standard sizes. Either way one help of eliminating the cuttings would be optimizing material usage by Reduction. Less waste and less expense

Shravan has a point here just simply ordering materials in excess is of no use, it uses more space and money, and you can also get materials of proper shapes that fit nowadays, so there will be no cutting n all other stuff, so basically you will be reducing things, and this also brings cost reduction also....

Hi

Need to have Waste management Plan in place. The best thing is we need to have plan, process and a tool to support it.

Have drafted a few steps for the framework:

Step 1Identify who is responsible

Step 2Identify the types and quantities of waste

Step 3Identify waste management options

Step 4Identify waste management sites and contractors

Step 5 - Carry out any necessary training

Step 6 – Plan for efficient materials and waste handling

Step 7Measure how much waste and what types of waste are produced

Step 7- Monitor & Control via Tool

Step 8- Review the output from the Tool metrics

Waste in construction materials : cause and remedy

idea posted by Er. Harnam Singh Project Manager, CPWD

In large construction projects wastage is bound to occure due to many reasons. Wastage occures mainly in following materials

Bricks, Aggregate, sand and malba genereted from concrete work and repair work and dismantling.

It is difficult to asses quantum of such waste in advance. Wastage in bricks occures due to breakage and due to seggregation of good quality material. Broken aggreagte can be used for base course in the plinth protection , under layer for footpaths. Similarly  dismantled concrete can also be used or recycled in filling low lying areas footpath etc. By use of waste material in such a way cost can be saved on the project developement. But certain mechanism need to be developed for its proper measurement accounting and use on project site or in nearby araes./

Waste reducing Design and Construction Techniques

idea posted by Chandramouli Sr. Manager - QS & Contracts

By designing buildings with efficient floor plans and with wall dimensions that match standard lumber sizes, architects can significantly reduce waste and cut materials and energy costs.

Waste management plan should inventory the projected waste streams, set goals for recycling and reuse, and detail procedures for materials handling, onsite management, and transportation. Compiling the plan will allow you to estimate the net cost or savings for separation and recycling.

Reuse is like using the existing materials instead of throwing it away. That does not include only building materials, Pipes, ceiling fixtures, bath fixtures, lamps, electrical sockets, even furnishings, bath tubs, shelves, cabinets all these can be used to some extent. Reusing does not mean YOU have to use it even donating it to non profit organizations is one very good option of construction waste management. So why simply throw it..

Further to earlier point i can add that we can really donate these construction waste for some NGOs which are building houses for the poor for their shelter, where it can be used, so instead of just throwing away the constrcution waste we can manage them very well by being innovative...

Composting

idea posted by Srinath Srinivasan Construction-Heavy, DLF
composting is a biodegradation which is done in huge composting pits, where many construction materials are degraded with the help of micro organisms, which will break the larger molecules to smaller and helps in making the fossil nature and then acts as manure, which can be used in agricultural fields.

Proper Education and Training

idea posted by Alok Sarkar Head/VP/GM-Corporate Planning/Strategy, Howrah Mills Co. Ltd., Howrah, WB.

From my 32 years of experience in Civil /Construction Engineering, I found that lack of proper knowledge and training are responsible for improper execution of work. I found ignorance everywhere. Top level managers and engineers should be able to motivate people who are reporting to them. Unfortunately, this is not the case always. If head of the family is not sincere about his responsibilities and duties, how can we expect others to be efficient and organized? We have to instil good construction management practices in the minds of all concerned by imparting training and refresher courses to the people who are engaged in the construction industry.

yes totally agree with your argument that the head of the team should properly manage his team and help them how to go about the job, there should be discipline at the work, if they are given proper education and training, they will adapt to the methods where there is less construction waste that is happening.

Proper Storage of waste materials

idea posted by Anjaneyula Reddy Construction-Heavy, DLF
This subject is often neglected in case of projects. It is very important to have all construction waste be stored within the site itself first. A proper screen should be provided so that the waste does not get scattered and does not become an eyesore. Attempts should be made to keep the waste segregated into different heaps as far as possible so that their further gradation and reuse is facilitated. Material, which can be reused at the same site for the purpose of construction, levelling, making road/pavement etc. should also be kept in separate heaps from those, which are to be sold or landfilled.

Yes Anjaneyula storage is one of the important aspect & from the standpoint of efficiency and liability, taking a look at what and how much material ends up in your storage site dumpster can tell you a lot about your crews and your trade contractors. One should routinely check out site waste stream as one way of evaluating efficient use of materials.....
