Many of us think that by simply locking the gates and front doors, it would be adequate to deter or even prevent your homes from being intruded or theft. However, despite such measures, a theft is committed every now and then that too on a regular basis . The first priority of any theft is completing the job without getting caught. Thus, the home with the least barriers are always prime targets for intruders.

So how will you design a building which prevents theft........ Any ideas ppl....

Be careful in all aspects

idea posted by Shaju George Facilities/Construction Manager, IBS Software Services (P) Ltd

The designer should be safety conscious in all aspects. Safety should be of prime importance in all aspects of design starting from external walls, doors, windows and other openings, roofing system, ventilations, compound wall, gate & grill etc.. External walls should be strong enough to prevent attack. Doors & windows - it is always better to provide additional safety grill. Locks should be of good quality. Roofing system should be properly designed covering all aspects of safety (particularly in case of non concrete roofing).

Safety alarm is a good option, but maintenance and error free operations are some challenges.

Hi nanda

In my view best way for preventing theft is to keep dogs. The best watchman for your house.

Ha Ha, the best idea and so common to the sense, that it immediately appeals. I would like to add, that the dogs be ferocious enough! But hey, what about the population that does not like dogs? May they continue to be deprived of belongings due to their dislike.

Doors and Windows

Don't you think whenever there is a theft happened it's mainly through the doors and windows, According to me it is very important to give priority while designing the house with these, these two should be properly designed with keeping security in mind, Some times the whole window frame will be removed, so we need to design where you can begin by making a hole with a drill through the frames of the windows and into the wall itself, which makes the windows stay intact. And doors with proper locking mechanism and security system is very much important........

Visibility & access control

Dogs etc are not design factors, although interesting and important in themselves. The design should be in such a manner that anybody approaching the house should feel exposed and must be visible.

Keeping plants and bushes in order is one good idea but it is pertaining to maintenance. But selection of species and their location can be given a thought from security angle at the time of design.

Strengthening of doors & windows is the last obstacle against theft. Grills, material (wood, steel etc), latches, locks etc shall be competent enough. It would be best if the alarm is thought in early stages and provisions are given in desgn itself.

Well Mr.Jha, when we are spending so much of money on constructing a building why not have all the latest gadgets like CCTV, doors with video cameras and voice system, addition to this security and as Mr. Gopinath sir said have few dogs.

Your building is theif proof.

Lighting

The main aim of theft is to enter the house unobtrusively for the burglars. Hence some of the house break ins take place in the day, just because there will be nobody in most of the homes as they will be going for their work. And houses which are well lit tend to discourage intruders, especially for areas with dark corners. As long as there is a point for entry, it should have abundant light.

So proper lighting is very important according to me.

Proper landscaping

Make sure your plants and bushes which you have put around your house is trim and tidy as it will allow for less hiding places for burglars and trespassers. If it is difficult to appear hiding in the shadows while trying to break in, intruders will try to search for other weak spots. By this it will make them think twice for an intrusion.....

Live Simple-Avoid theft

idea posted by Charles davison Project Manager, Douglas OHI LLC

Thieves Generally make a recon of the building as well as the life styles  goings and comings of the inhabitants before they strike.

In most cases there is a insider who is involved-House maid, security guard, gardner, butler etc.

The more Richer lifestyle flaunted, the more uneasy and insecure at home.

The best way is to Live simple and keep no valuables(packable)at home.

So you dont have to design and spend on Security gadgets and construction aganist robbery

Remember- For a thief who wants to break in ,what ever you do it is a matter of extra 5 minutes to half hour job.( I learnt it from a customer way back in 1990 who wanted Aluminium windows to his flat instead of Iron grills on wooden windows)
