As I was just reading the news, I thought the news had some real importance and purpose behind it and it just stuck my mind that it would be great to know the views of my fellow toostep members on the platform as most of them are from corporate sectors, who better than them would know regarding this...

India is likely to face a huge 'talent deficit' in the coming years, as the country is not producing enough people equipped with the right skills required for the globalised environment a report from Deloitte said.  Talent deficit is likely to grow significantly in the coming years as universities and educational centres are not providing the adequate skills for the country to produce required number of talented managers.

So people what do you think, how to end this talent deficit in the country.

Hi All,

I dont agree with Deloitte report on Huge Talent deficit in India. I have came across such report around 3-4 years back when the Retail sector has started streamlined with large corporates. I remember on those days every news channel and print media has given such reports but at the end of the day every body has got the adequate talent.

I agree with the points 'VOCATIONAL ......IN EDUCATION SYSTEM' and 'RESERVATION ..... EVERY WHERE'.

We must understand that the Indian society and culture is totally different and Indians have capabiity to adjust any type of environment. adopt new skills quickly etc etc. Such qualities of Indians will not lead to any talent shortage in India.

Secondly the Indian economy, culture and living conditions does not permit us for speciallized courses. Because of the same reason, we have most general courses for any graduation / post graduation. For example, when a mechanical engineer comes out from engineering collage then he / she have the basic level knowledge of HVAC, Automobile, Production, Design, Boilers, Structural engineering etc etc.

But I do agree that we should have more practical aspect covered in the education system so as the person coming out from collage have more then the basic knowledge.

So with above I condemn the reports of Deloitte on talent shortage.

In the last part of your comment, Mr. Dayanand Deshpande you have placed the responsibility of skill development on the universities and educational skills. Why should these institutions be responsible for skill development? They are there for imparting knowledge. Skill development is the responsibility of the corporate sector. But your basic point that there might be a talent deficit could be right discounting the usual fear psychosis creation by consultancies..

Maybe the quality of talent can drop, but in an over-populated country like India deficit is highly unlikely

This is for corporate to take note that it had lessened burden of grooming Talent & try to take experienced perssonel only.

Industry specific syllabus

idea posted by Dayanand Deshpande Senior Consultant, Ernst & Young

I think this is where Indian education system is lacking, there is no proper industry specific syllabus for students in the universities and colleges across the country, when they come out with a degree most of the employers reject them because they have no idea of what is currently happening in the industry and wouldn't know a thing of recent industry techniques which are out there, as colleges would not have taught them in the first place, so there should be a total shift in the way Indian education system is functioning at the moment, and to start it off they can  do by changing the syllabus according to the various industry specifications.

Our Education system is obsolete and redundant. The exams in schools and colleges is just a farce. There are many children who stop coming to schools at an early age just because they couldnt clear a year and their families think its shear waste of time and money. The child would rather do good in life if he pursues a vocation and gains experience. Now, had the child not gone through the regular exams we would have had one more professional to add to the tally. The point is we should understand the potential of each child and then mould his carrier rather than testing him in areas which are not of his interests.

It will be myopic just to say we do not face any talent deficit for corporate India. The Second generation Colleges started in this one decade, what we see to day are huge in buildings but deficient in efficient teaching faculty. Causes may be many. Many institutions are not having even labs. The courses offered are one sided and having only IT on their list. Core courses are not finding their place be it technology, management or life sciences. The aim of these colleges is to produce large quantity of students but not quality education. The direction of these courses is towards what the world need from India But not India needs from Indians. There should be guidelines from institutions like UGC, debates in Knowledge platforms, public forums like parliament, Assemblies and plans in central and state governments.

Our patriotism should lie in strengthening our country by removing our weakness and increasing our opportunities and there by eliminating threats of global competition do not disagree that we have more number of graduates. We have to see how many can stand to international level of competency in corporate management. Recent news paper reports as well as reports from the industry predict the deficit in corporate capability in future. Therefore let us strengthen our community hands by constructive criticism over this issue and ways to tackle it.

In present education system, you have to study those subjects also in which you have no interest.Everybody has got inborn  interest/talent in specific field/subject. So only those subjects should be taught. Every year maximum students who fail in SSC exam are in the subjects like English and Mathematics(which are not at all necessary for everybody. Those who have to go for higher studies, they can only  opt for these subjects). So these subjects shall be made optional and I am sure that the result will definitely improve.

Also instead of teaching only theory, emphasis shoud be given on making available uptodate knowhow and practical knowledge so that as soon as the student enters the working field, he can start working from day one and only minor training is required and as the subject is of his interest only, he can make fast progress in future .

There are certain fields in which no formal training is available so those fields are to be identified and manpower to be trained. There is scarcity of manpower in such fields which is the subject we are discussing.

Vision for life is important

idea posted by K Satish Kumar Promotion and MArketing , Twinings Pvt. Ltd.

All round development of personality is the purpose of education. But the present day education is neither imparting true knowledge of life, nor it is able to specify the field one is interested in. We all want to become Engineers or Doctors or Computer specialists in IT or Software, which is beyond the reach for many of us, all cannot shine in such a line if not suited later on. So, to overcome disappointments in the working life clarity of thought (Vision) is very important.

Vision is very important, based on it one can shape his /her career. Based on it one can live interesting life doing satisfying job and can achieve remarkable things in some field in the world.  For realizing their potential parental and education system guidance is necessary but it should not interfere in the creativity or individuality of the students.

I am agree with deficit of talent in Corporate Sector.  Corporate culture born in country in recently in true form very late, and growing fast.  Country has limited Business and Technology Schools at that time.

Today the talent in Indian Corporate sector are from family and schools who teach and learn them the values.  They success in the world also.  Our social structures basically develop our talent not any institute or organisation.  We people born with vision and follows the vision upto death.

I can not fully express my views due to lack of poor languge.  Vision for life is important and Indian proved it everywhere.

Area Specific Courses

idea posted by Atul Kumar `Confidential, Confidential

Most of the today's courses are general and talk about everything possible. The target is to cater the mass of the people and attract them towards the offer. They loose the focus and mis-guide the student in most of the cases. We need to change our approach to make the student specialized in field.

  • Skill based courses
  • Industry oriented courses
  • Practical based courses
  • R & D based courses

A computer course does not means teaching all languages and making them master of none. They should teach one or two on going or upcoming languages and make the people master on them.

Management courses are somewhat specific, but general courses are missing this part. We need to think and act on this area.

I support for area specific courses....the reason being that a student after passing out from institution doesnt have much of feel of the corporate radar...hence area specific courses help a student to identity the smaller details of the job...plus.. after joining the organisation, the student understands things and then that would prove effective....

Mr. Atul KUmar is right. Introducing Area related or Industry related courses will definitely help students to get updated for the daily coming newer technologies and we won't be lacking skills...

Reservation in education and jobs every where

idea posted by SB DIKSHIT STATE QUALITY MONITOR, U.P.R.R.D.A

Huge talent deficit may be due to reservation of s.c,s.t and o.b.c.  for education and in jobs both .Instead of any reservation facility should be given, because of this there is a great brain drain.

Overhaul The Education System

idea posted by aditya ghare Multimedia Designer & Developer, Final Edit

Learning has to have a ROI, not just an investment on supposedly relevant knowledge which is more than less, irrelevant in economic terms. Choice is the prerogative of the student and nobody else. Reforms in the education policy, programmes and innovation in communicating relevant knowledge should be implemented at the earliest. Education Ministry should be revamped, Phd is not a qualification creative enough to conjure or implement reforms. Advertising professionals are more eligible contenders.

Vocational, Practical, entrepreneurship, corporate and career exposure in education system

idea posted by Nagpal Singh Sales and Business Development, Babel Group of companies

Today most of the graduates be it management, engineers or any professional stream do just plan for a job, mean since the day of inception of their course they dream a job..... irrespective of other career explorations as they have been learning to serve..... the focus of youngesters is to get a job not a better career option because jobis the only and somehow available structure.....

and if we train our people in full regard of their career we must do something innnovative as we should make fuandamental changes in our professional education system by bringing Vocational, Practical, entrepreneurship, corporate and career exposure in education system

Human Resource Management

idea posted by Mukesh Industrial Engineer, Centre for Research in Insustrial staff performance

The talent crisis originate only because of HR policies because of which the Trained resouce leaves and the New one could not make entry only because the HR thinks that the Profile doesn't matches. This makes the potential candidates to suffer and at the same time the recruting organization suffers. The behaviour of HR in this regards means that some thing is wrong with them or simply means that their wasted interest cannot be fulfilled. Or simply in other words it means that due to cost cutting and time involved in searching the right talent the entire activity is out sourced.

Yes, Strangely its true, what with our IIMs churning out people selling soaps, colas and giving expert ideas to people how to invest in stocks and bonds. These institutions are turning out to be exclusive abode of the elite. I think there should be more institutions catering to the potential leaders who care to contribute to generate force to turn India into a super power. Corporates can afford to take the cream (from IIMs) but what is the left for the base, the back bone on which the corporates want to stand on? The US and the G8 countries are reaping the current downturn with this faulty and selfish ideals of some big corporates.

Hence what India needs is talent at the Govt and SMEs level, genuine contribution in all the sectors with out corruption will go a long way in allround development of this country. No longer we can have  two seminars side by side in a five star hotel, one for the launch of new BMW model and in another one discussing starvation deaths in poverty ridden rural hamlets of India.
