KNOWING THE PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES OF MANAGEMENT

idea posted by NATTERAJA R. ARIKRISHNAN GM-Projects, Bentec Electricals & Electronics Pvt. Ltd

To improve one's management skills it would be better knowing the basic concept of management principles and techniques. Reading of some management books or participating in short-term courses will help to understand the management concept which can be practiced and applied on the job and thus gaining more practical knowledge in improving the skills.

Management is the only activating element of any organizations for getting the things done through its team members.Management acts as a creative and invigorating force in the organization. It provides new ideas, imaginations, and visions to the group working and integrates its efforts in order to achieve better results.

The management principles or functions are related to Planning, Organization, Control, Coordinating, Decision Making, Communication, and Delegation of authority & responsibility etc,.The management facilitates to apply all the above functions in Production, Budget & Finance, Sales & Marketing, Logistic & Supply Chain Management, Dealers & Channel partners and also the HR which is very important to deal with the human beings in the organizations creating the results.

It may please be noted that knowing the principles of management will not help to improve one's skill, but he should know how to apply these in a practical way to get the things done by others, which needs a good leadership qualities to lead the team in convincing them to achieve the goal of the organizations. There are good leaders in organizations without knowing the management principles but practicing by virtue of their experience and maturity and sometimes they are called as born leaders. Such leaders are all good human being and encouraging their team members to do their best to secure the results. Hence the management is a art and a profession by itself.

Thanks for the referral Ms.Meena.

The management relates to dealing with the human being in the organizations.Managing the human being is not easy to get the things done. Human beings are the social animals and hence managing the human animals require some sort of skills as to drive them to work in order to get the things done. This is a very big art and profession and also a major role play in management skills.

Define every day schedule

Thanks,Meena for referral.Every thing is OK.The real problem with us is ,we never define our every day schedule and this leads us to deal with cluttered objective.

I agree with Mr.Bakhsh. If we are working on managerial position it means we have all other features of management. But one of the simple factor "Time Management" we usually neglect it. If we continuously schedule our day to day work then there is no extra efforts are required to be a good manager. To manage the whole work is just "schedule & done it timely" nothing else.......

Decision Making

idea posted by kanukurthy sudershanrao Operations Manager, Andhra Bank
Decision Making is the major managerial skill that is required under uncertain circumstances. Technical skills are required at the lower levels. Human relations and communication is required for Middle Management levels. Conceptual skills are required for the Senior management levels. In all the levels decision making is the most important. Ultimately deciding not to decide is also a decision, which was successfully used by P V Narasimha Rao, Ex-Prime Minister so that the problems got solved by themselves

Make as many questions as possible and apply your observations, gut sense to answer them. Compare different situations -the easiest and the toughest. You can learn and develop knowledge most of this practice.

Deligation and take accountability

idea posted by STEPHEN SELVAKUMAR.J Assistant Construction Manager - Highways
Deligation is the most powerful skill of management. when you deligate the work to your sub-ordinates, then only you will became a Manager. But manager should take accountability of that work. As a Manager we Make arrangements, give training, moral support to our Juniors. Due to Deligation, Time Saved, Team work habit should improved, Do lot of activities simultaniously.

Preach only what you can Practice

Talking about Discipline : "Be punctual, before asking others to be punctual" Assertive: "Be Assertive, create perfect blue-print of what you want as "outcome" Communication: Understand the nuances of formal and informal communication styles. "Non-verbal cues (otherwise body language) will give you better clarity about the person you are dealing with. Orders - Work out Priorities, document your priorities well, make them known to all the levels, examine whether your priorities are well understood, fix timeline, monitor and test the outcomes twice for errors, before making them public. Proud - Never ever claim the "Positive Outcome" due to your own perseverance in order to score a point. Ascribe and attribute to your team for the success. Praise all those who have contributed in this success, recommend incentives for those who have gone "extra mile" in achieving this, which will be a reminder for others to perform even better! Behaviour - Maintain cool all the time - No tough situation will stay for long, as the tough situations are like passing cloud. Bide time to find out all possible alternatives; No two situations are alike, therefore, prepare yourself well for any eventualities all the time! Have your people on your side, any division will ruin you at the time of distress!

try to take multiple challenges you can, this will give experience of managing things rather than studying it. Management is not learning it's behavioral ability in conflicting situations.

Be a Systemic thinker

idea posted by Mathew Cherian Research Associate/Analyst, Western Michigan University
When you work, try to be systemic that is see the whole structure and get a bearing on the workflow. Most important is identifiying ones 'role' that is seeing what is the value your work is to provide for the organization the underlying concepts that make your work functional. Also get a bearing on the 'targets' you are supposed to be responsible for.

... on the job. This is one way to develop your management skills a lot. Because an informed person is a better manager. Read about your industry you are in to know the latest developments and happenings. Read about other industries that you have interest in. Read a lot of self development books and practise them as much as possible in your day-to-day life. Above all innovate and dont get typecast or stuck to one idea be it on life, people or work.

As suggested by Meena communicate with your staff. Understand them. Reciprocate their feelings. Represent their feelings before the top management. Discuss top management's views and take them into confidence. Seek their suggestions. Be honest and upright. Have committment to your job and create a sense of belonging in the staff. Difficult but keep on trying. Best of Luck to you..
