There can't be a better introduction to them than saying, "The government banks with them." The State Bank of India [ Get Quote ] (SBI) is the oldest and largest bank in the country. Its origins go back to the first decade of the 19th century, when the Bank of Calcutta was established on 2 June 1806. The bank got its present name after an Act of Parliament in May 1955 and the State Bank of India was constituted on 1 July 1955.
SBI has successfully kept pace with changing technology. Although, at present, it does not offer facilities like phone and mobile banking, the process of offering these services is in the advanced stages. Its ATMs allow you to do a lot more than accessing cash: you can pay the fees for more than 100 education institutions, deposit application fees for competitive exams, give donations to trusts and temples and also transfer funds. To widen its ATM network further, SBI has entered into a partnership with 13 banks for bilateral sharing of ATMs. However, this will call for a small fee. |

service is the main thing which we expect from any bank and even they . second is the service charge which they charge from its customers. SBI is the only bank which charge low to its customers. moreover any bank has direct and indirect income. May be this is the only bank which took into consideration that may be the reason why it charges low and do the business with less profit. This is the only bank which work with service motto
Thanks for the referral Ms.Sonam Kapoor.
In my opinion SBI is good, though I do not have any account with them. Then how I am saying it is good, that is from the deliberations made by my friends and colleagues who are having very good opinion on SBI. Hence old is gold. Moreover, my earlier company was having accounts with SBI and the accounts officer used to say always good about SBI and its services.

As said SBI is the largest one and stands for a long time, but ICICI is the one which is known for its service, the hindrance with them is the interest rates. Other than that they serves best of the business pupils. They are introduced the word flexible banking. |

I agree with you SBI functions as typical Government Bank slow.Yes service given by ICICI is better as compared to SBI but not that good either. At present SBI is best in India.

According to Rating agencies, ICICI is held 45th rank. And it doesn't make sense to make comparison between various banks in India with the help of rating . ICICI LTD. a parent company of ICICI bank is more popular in national & international investment market since 1955. ICICI Bank launched in 1994 by ICICI LTD with the name of ICICI banking corporation. "ICICI" already made their highest investment in world market especially in NYSE. We have seen the impact of that investment in 2008 during recession, where ICICI got heavy loss due to falling in NYSE and other world markets. In India also ICICI has made a lot of investment in various companies. It also belongs to the category of top DIIs in India. And If we are making comparison with the help of complaints then i want to say just one thing that "No one can satisfy in service sector' although he/she is employee for same company. nothing else...... LIC has also so many pending complaints but it is still best.... |

If ICICI is the only bank of India to figure in that list I think it reflects more on the credibility of the rating agency. ICICI guys seem to be good only at manipulating awards in their favor. On the ground level, this bank tries to operate on marketing gimmicks rather than the content of banking services. Customer service at this bank should be rated one of the worst in the country. Check out any grievance site and ICICI would top in customer complaints. |

HDFC's onine banking services are so secure that even customers can't easily access them! Risk management seems to be an obsession with the HDFC without them realizing that every one of their customers is not a thief out to con them. Apart from that. HDFC is quite an average bank of course much, much better than the ICICI which should easily qualify for the worst bank ever. SBI is the best among the Indian banks: safe, secure, reliable, but of course a bit inefficient at times.

In a huge demographic ocean like India with n number of regional layers, economic stratae, we cant nominate just one bank as numero uno... If I remember correctly I heard about banking first from my father whose pension account was Central Bank of India prior to 1990's but now he banks with SBI. My first personal savings account was with Punjab National Bank, in 1993. Later in due course of career progress heard a lot about Corporation bank, Citi Bank, Deutche Bank delivering commercial banking services with efficiency during 1996-2004. My first two wheeler loan was from SBI way back in 1994. Pssst...My mother in law works for SBI, Cochin, Kerala With ICICI I had two very nasty experiences just because of their inability to handle growth & customer service because of which I dont use "ANY" products of ICICI per-se from 2003 onwards. At that time their on roll staff & associate staff were arrogant, rash but fast. Currently along with HDFC bank, I also have relations with ABNAmro (now RBS in India) and SBI should be prepared for a phase post its current chairman OP Bhatt's tenure because 60% of SBI's current growth, agressive branding & promotion, consolidation plans, disciplines getting implemented, trainings being showered on employees can be attributed to his vision, expertise & delegating work style. His teaser loan rates, stand on banking staff compensation etc all are which wouldnt have even thought by other Nationalised banks, unless banks like HDFC, ICICI etc were not there who increased the length, breadth and depth of banking in India.... A habit of "savings" was inculcated in me by a very junior sales exec of HDFC in 2003. He took time to explain how mutual funds work, why it is relatively safe for savings building etc. People at HDFC bank are courteous, try to leverage their relations with you, dont try forcibly sell their other banking/financial products onto you, but inform you about points which can be used for building your cash/investment corpus. Mr. Biju B Nair of HDFC Bank, Cochin, Kerala is one of the most finest bankers I could get till now. Despite me not an HNI, he spared his time for advising me on various banking/financial matters like Home-loan protection insurance, online share trading, performing mutual funds etc...I feel people at HDFC Bank, and nurturing by HDFC Bank is the main reason for their stupendous growth - both organic & inorganic (remember TIMES bank, CBoP, etc) Hence my vote for Both HDFC & SBI... |

ICICI introduced goonda-banking in the country. They ought to be ranked best for the number of client-suicides induced by their Recovery goondas. Next come HDFC Corporation, and HDFC and Citi banks. These foreign institutions literally suck Indian blood. With our corrupt administration playing for them, our only resistance seems to be possible through staining our blood through HIV or so, only! |

ICICI is undoubtedly the best bank, atleast in the urban sections of India. The reasons are : Though people have had their bad experinces with the bank including me, the bank really offers he best services in private sector industries in India. They do charge a higher price, but I agree to pay a little higher fee for the kind of service they offer. I have been handling all of my account level activities over internet from past 2-3 years only with ICICI. There are very few banks that offer such service. |

By value may be yes, by service I don't think NO bank in India is efficient and people friendly. It still has the same govt bureaucratic approach. Employees needs more rigorous training. It may take time to change the mindset. |

SBI started campaig as "Banker to everyone" and ICICI " Kayal aapka". SBI want to increase the number because they are in expansion mode and ICICI started increasing customer relationship.
Frankly speaking the people who are interested in spenging 1000 bucks per year as a banking fee go for ICICI. SBI charges only 50 bucks as annual maintaince fee. But one u customer who is saving money he cant save the time and who ever goes for ICICI they feel happy with their service.
I am the customer of two banks, my experience with SBI was tooo bad, Where ever u go in India u find only bureaucratic employees. They never respect customer.

The reality is contrary to what is being depicted in promos. The branches never respond to any issue & the call centre service is PATHETIC. The bank has gone ahead & provided credit cards/finance etc to all Tom Dick & Harry. This might show good on paper but NPA & defaulters are rising alarmingly.
