The term “sustainability” is often thrown around in public discourse, especially in discussion about the environment. However, not everyone is certain about the meaning of sustainability, and different people think about it in different ways.

So, in environmental terms what does sustainability means to you?

Practices that impact nature the least....

idea posted by Isha Verma Sales/BD Manager, Larsen & Toubro

In environmental terms, sustainability implies that an action can be continued indefinitely with little, or manageable, impact on the environment. Because the health of the environment is closely linked with the health of society in general, sustainable practices ensure that the Earth's resources will be available for future generations to enjoy, and that there will be an Earth to enjoy them on.

For this reason, many companies focus on sustainability, either as consultants to other companies or as part of their corporate mission.

Environmental sustainability is the ability to maintain the qualitites that are maintained in the physical environment. Threats to these aspects of environment means that there is a risk that these things will not be maintained. But preservation of environment will not be enough as human has damaged the environment seriously so we need restoration of the environment instead of only to sustain. According to corporates this means the least impact on environment I'm myself supporting this idea but this will be dangerous because 50% of the environment has been damaged and if we continue with this approach threat will arise to human life. That's why I'm more emphasizing on the RESTORATION of the environment.

Thanks Natteraja for referral. According to me the environment should be safeguarded even while all round development takes place like creation of infrastructure etc..

Take the case of Mumbai which needs an additional airport and the site that has been shortlisted in Navi Mumbai will destroy some 400 acres of mangrove. So a alternative site is being looked for in order to save the environment, which in turn will save the city from future disasters, as the experts feel.

I think this type of practice on a regular basis sustains and preserve the nature best.

Carbon footprint by company and steps taken to reduce it

idea posted by Shridhar Chandru Business Developement Manager, ERP Consulting Company

In Environmental terms, sustainability is measured by the amount of carbon footprint an organization leaves in environment and the the steps taken by the company to reduce the carbon and its components' concentration .

Even a computer monitor emits out carbon when idle(when switched on)/working , then one can imagine carbon emission from data centres and server rooms that functions 24X7X365.

Mapping the carbon footprint is one of the popular method presently followed by most of the companies under sustainability to minimize the bad impact on environment. In fact most of the company use this as a tool for marketing their own product.

This is one of the good inactivate by companies whereas this also demand the technology enmeshment. If you look for the present technology trade in the Developing countries where technology is just following (lagging behind) the developed countries, Indian companies may lose credit on carbon footprint when in competition.

So I believe this is good inactivate from industries and if Indian companies want to compete, they need to equip there product in the similar fashion. Whereas we should make sure that this should not hamper Indian industry growth when they deal across the globe.

Environmental sustainability mean to maintain the nature without spoiling the qualitis forever

Present trend is very advesre to nature. only few are crying on saving the nature many are mum on this subject. Some are encashing this weakness. General living conditions are changed. Many are purchasing water for drinkig water. The others are suffering with the water related illnesses. public service organizations are not maintaining and fulfilling this water system, finally where it goes. If every one should purchase water what will happen for common people. in case of Air pollution, if the society leaves like this, many are suffering from illnesses, in near future we are going to suffer more from pollution related desieses and adverse effect of nature. For all of our betterment every one in society should feel responsibility and maintain NATURE NATURALLY WHILE ENJOING THE NATURE.

Mr, Mohammad, I fully support you for this as i also think Sustainability in terms of environment is or can be stated as conservation ,

Conservation in terms of using natural resources as efficiently as possible and impact on nature should be as less as possible,

VALUE NATURE & Creations

idea posted by Ravindra Sharma Managing Consultant, CHEF-India

Attaching value and respect for nature, its creations and using only as much is barely essential is sustainability. The aim being we can share the fruits of nature amongst all living beings and be able to sustain the resources little longer.

The resources provided by nature are limited and humans have already hogged the share from many other species making them extinct yet if we do not learn to optimize our needs we are heading for trouble.

Co-existence

Sustainability aims to balance the needs of human societies with the needs of the environment, preserving both for all creatures on Earth to make use of and enjoy. Sustainability promotes biodiversity, the preservation of unique ecosystems, the health of the environment, and a high quality of life. Most governments have official agencies which promote sustainability; in the United States, for example, the Environmental Protection Agency, among many others, works to create a clean and healthy environment through regulation, inspection, enforcement, and education.

Sustainability

idea posted by Rajesh Choudhary M.E/M.Tech/MS student, National Institute Of Technology (NIT), Kozhikode (kerala)

Sustainability means the development of resources without compromising the future demand. in case of Environment, the impact of development on the environment should not be high, the development should carried out with the change of environment without harming it more and consider the result of development on environment in future. Because the emission of carbon is fixed by Kyoto Protocol with respect to the change in climate, and development is directly connected with carbon emission.

Sustainability today means wisdom to change; nations their developmental policies, companies their business practices, individuals their life-styles, so as to keep the human life on earth keep going, and avoid an impending catastrophe by way of nature’s backlash, due to climatic changes induced mainly by human greed. Remember Gandhiji’s prophetic words “Mother has provided everything to satisfy our needs but not our greed.

We find some of our natural resources been wasted and exported without value addition. China imports iron ore from various countries even though China has large amount iron ore mines. Their objective is to preserve their resources for better and proper utilization. All natural resources should be utilized in a sustainable manner so that it preserved and managed effectively.

idea posted by Sarabjeet Singh Johar BMS student, Mumbai University
Sustainability in environment terms is a continious process , lets take an example of plant which has flowers , fly's and insect feed on it but they also distribute the seeds of the plant so that generations to come of the insects/ fly can have a source of food for them and also this helps to preserve the enivornment. This is a continious process .
