I think hedge fund is the best option in the present context. As it works beyond the boundary of any regulators and it has the instruments like equities, bonds, commodities, forex. So it provides a wide range of hedging tool. I strongly believe that hedge fund is the safest method to be in the financial market.

Unlike mutual funds hedge funds with few regulations and a number of investment strategies are capable of generating returns under all market conditions. They employ leveraging , short selling, derivatives etc and at though times can bet against growth and price rise. Usually hedge funds out perform mutual funds during market fall.

Hedge Funds use a lot of leverage and in today's current credit markets there is a lot of uncertainty as to what will happen. SEC banning short sales of many companies has also affected funds performances. This means you should focus on funds that use moderate to no leverage and that implement a strategy that is not correlated.
