India is home to more than 375 million children, comprising nearly 40 percent of the country's population,  the largest number of minors in any country in the world. Despite its ethos of non-violence, tolerance, spirituality and a new trillion-dollar economy, India hosts the world's largest number of sexually abused children, at a far higher rate than any other country.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in every four girls and one in every seven boys in the world are sexually abused, hardly encouraging, but still far below India's totals.

So, what measures should be taken to prevent child abuse??

legal reforms and change in perception

idea posted by purushottam awasthi LLM student, Faculty of Law Lucknow University, Lucknow

the crime relating to child abuse and incest remain hidden behind  our hypocratic social setup and thus are rampant in our society.

It is submitted that either there is no law on such issues or they are too old to embrace the situation( for example Sec. 377  of the IPC is the only law relating to child abuse but that would need the act of sodomy for punishing a person, the result is other acts of child abuse are left out of the purview)

Further incest is considered more a moral wrong than a crime and so it is often hidden.

The need of the hour is stringent and specific law on the issues . This needs to be coupled with a change in social mindset that such act need not be hidden but should be punished.

Hope everyone will agree the child should not suffer for any reason. With legal reforms and change in perception with Government / NGO / sponsored organizations can take up their educations and their requirements to live peacefully and come up in their life.

The child related crimes is happening due to their economic weaker section. As i mentioned earlier Government and NGO Organization to take up their education and their requirements to live peacefully and to study well. Also we should create more awareness regarding this issue.

GOVTS BOTH IN CENTRE AND STATES SHOULD ALLOCATE ENOUGH AMOUNTS OF MONEY TO CREATE CONSUMER AWARENESS AND BRING IN NECESSARY STRINGENT LAWS TO PUNISH OFFENDERS,THEREBY CREATING A SENSE OF FEAR IN THE MINDS OF PROBABLE OFFENDER.PARENTS SHOULD TAKE PAINS TO EDUCATE THEIR GIRL CHILDREN TO BE MORE CAUTIOUS,THEY SHOULD ALSO MONITOR THEIR MOVEMENTS,WHERE AND WITH WHOM THEY ARE SPENDING THEIR TIME BOTH WHEN EITHER PARENTS ARE AT HOME ARE IN OFFICE.

Instruct Your Child About The Danger

idea posted by Deepak Kubal Media Coresspondent, Media House

There are many people who do not wish to face the reality of child abuse. Pretending that the problem does not exist, or that your child is too young to be warned about the dangers, are both ideas that would make your child more vulnerable. A child who is not forewarned about the dangers of abuse is a soft target for a pedophile.

It is easy to warn your children about strangers who might harm them. Considering the fact that most molesters are friends or relatives, it is a very difficult task to teach them to protect themselves from the people they know, love, and respect. Nevertheless, it can be done.

Government and NGO Organizations should educate people to avoid this problem. Also they can amend the law for bigger punishment. Also this is more of psychological problem may be family dispute, etc. For no reason child should not suffer.

when the child says something. you might get an important clue, in the case of child molestation it is not the unknown danger, it is a usually someone who the child knows and trusts.

By the way who told you that India top?

predators of pedophilia are western men, at least that is what we see in goa.

Strict Action by Government

a strict govt. action is a good option, actually the situation goes like this. this is my first hand experience with such cases.

  1. kids don't really voice the abuse.
  2. parents, when they find out, punish the child.
  3. parents are scared that if action is taken against the predatory, the repercussions would endanger the child further, so they hush it up.
  4. if both the above hurdles are overcome, and the case does reach the child cell, there are cases where the predator has threatened to go public that the child's family is defaming him the fear of notoriety makes the parents keep quiet.

the mechanism should be no press, and severe action, but loopholes in the Indian system is so much, look at Aruna shanbag's predator, he is scott free. The 8yrs. old rape victim at Antop hill she died, her abuser was given 7yrs rigorous imprisonment, and then released he has now changed his name and he is free.

Teach Them To Follow Their Instincts

idea posted by Neelima Pandey PR & Media Relations Manager, Group M

Children may not know all the technical terms. However, they have an inbuilt instinct when something wrong is done and a very strong sense of what is wrong and what is proper. Teaching a child to follow his/ her instincts and say a firm 'No' to an abuser, could prove to be very effective.
