Prof. C.K. Prahalad is quoted as saying that there is a leadership problem here in India.

A few weeks earlier Prof. Mazumdar stated in Business Line with charts and grpphs that the present Inflation is due to the lop-sided interest rate policies of the past.

One wonders whether it is  a problem of the present or whether we ever had a leader from Independence ?

So what do you think Folks, about our leadership in the past years and present?

Need leadership at all levels

idea posted by Gargi Sinha Senior Consultant, Hewitt Associates

Its very much true that India lacks leadership. What is needed is leadership at every level, and the most dangerous aspect of India at the present time is that it does not have any. The ruling people have little real understanding of what it would take to make India a nation that cares for all of its people; indeed, they have little intent to achieve such a goal, in any case. So we need leaders who can understand the problems and play their role in guiding the country.

At this moment in India,Leadership quality urges

1. nothing less than the re-construction of everyday reality

2.courage to live creatively on the edge of competition, differentiated work cultures at each & every level...

Well According to me there is no leadership problem but the atmosphere around the leader is so critical that many of the leaders discard to be leader for next time in india.

It is very essential to get people understanding importance of leadership at all level &  India lagging in leadership.  leadership is at all over &every level, and the painful aspect of India are minimum time maximum gaining strategy, confidence level, current human rights, logical thinking, money  that it does not have any. we need to set the goal of leadership by understanding their problem & guiding people in right direction to move forward

People get the Leader they deserve

People get the leadership they deserve.

The problem is not with Leader alone it is with people as well who unabashedly change course within split seconds for self benefits without any care for the people around. Bureaucrats serve much longer than politicians, yet do they place national interest to fore?. Do professionals follow their respective sets of ethics? The list is long....... we have to first start thinking like responsible citizen's of a free country and not keep behaving like slaves forever awaiting someone else to come with a magic wand and solve our problems.

Yet in such scenario leader may never get elected..........as may not be popular.

How can we expect good leaders if mere numbers and immediate benefits and not depth of understanding and long term vision become relevant to process of selection and decision.

I agree with previusly statement: in a democracy, the leadership is the mirror of the voting and participating people.

Ask to actual leaders to change is a pray.

Understand why they behave so and so, why they show certain values, why they succeed, why people criticize but still continue to support them in decisive political moments, this is a far better starting point to base an opportunity for change.

If voting/ participating people change, also leaders will change. If not: it's clear there is a long journey for elites, so misaligned in perception versus historical reality, to build up a progressive different people political culture.

Just something important to know what kind of effort (and resistence) you need to put in place for change: as in the companies the same, no, much more, in the society

My 2 cents

I understand what you say. I have to say this is a question of disposition which has to be addressed through political vision and economic endowment and other public good criterion. A culture should be evolving one not stagnating, so that conformity should be replaced by entertaining also non conformity. Like social psychologists directs us, " a society that does not entetain non conformity is bound to be dormant dwarfing progress"

Leadershi Problem !

idea posted by Mathew Cherian Research Associate/Analyst, Western Michigan University

I feel Plato and Adam Smith were not wrong when they stated "only Philosophers can be Leaders". Philosophy is the study of "Virtuosity". So we can assume that Leaders must be virtuos in their actions. Our poverty and aggression towards citizen by clusters and leadership tanatramount to Virtuos behaviour ow or even in the past.

Leadership problem ? Obviously YES. In a democratic country where decision making is with political big wigs in the ruling coalition, the vacuum in the top posts of almost all political parties is of great concern. However, I do not attribute rising inflation on lack of political will alone. In 80s and early 90s when entire world reeled under inflation, India could contain inflation to a great extent. The world scenario has changed much. With opening out of world economy and trade, India can no more stand isolated.

Even at the current level, the inflationary effect in India is much less when compare to many other developing nations.  Of course, thing could be improved with reigning in the greedy middle men and hoarders.

However, the key issue is the stony stagnation in per capita income. To quicken the pace of growth in per capita income, there are mainly three areas to act upon.

1. Make all able persons in the urban and rural population employable so as to effectively engage them in agriculture, farming, small scale industries and various infrastructure projects.

2. Quickly launch much needed infrastructure projects worth trillions, in various fields across the country. To raise money, Government cannot beg, but can borrow by way of issuing various bonds, steal by confiscating excess gold in lieu of gold bonds, increase liquidity even by cheating the economy if required by printing enormous hard cash, and mercilessly tax high end luxury goods, 4 wheelers and houses.

  1. All anti national activities shall be treated as treason and meted with commensurate punishment.

Now all these need consolidated team work under able leaders.

Now, do we really have some?

Yes there are. The way to get good leaders in governance is to clean up the political arena so that they will find it a congenial space to work and live with honor.

Emergence of a positive trend.

idea posted by Arinjay Kumar Administration, BSF

Traditionally, there have not been too many leaders on Indian socio - political front who can be known to have any dynamic ideas or can be a role model for the nation. However, the victory of a few new generation politicians in the previous Lok Sabha election, was a positive trend in national politics. Since then, a few of them have really proved their mettle. It can be expected that in times to come, they will be able to give a strong leadership and take the country to the pinnacle of the development in all spheres.

Arinjay, let us hope the new breed can deliver. Maran seems to be doing good with Telecom. Probably more philosophical expecially training in existential philosophy, work culture, functionality and outcome directed behavior etc; need be incorporated in leaders of next generation which was lacking as we all know post independence.

Need Youth Leadership

idea posted by Kriti Das HR Manager, ANZ Information Technology

In my opinion India has a people and leadership crisis despite its huge population. Leadership is very hard to teach in the classroom; it can only be taught by doing, experiencing real-life situations, through role models. In the past we had many great leaders who has taken great decissions for the people of the country, but today no one is ready to take initiatives. Youth leadership in India is needed for bringing revolution in Indian economy, management, Industry, society and politics. Youth leadership will also provide new way of achievement from useful idea.

I understan what Mr. Kirti says. It is a question of cognition which can be achieved only through Academia. Workplace training which is what most of our politicians go through won't help in building the material change for cognition. Then this has become our culture, we never bother about cognition in other areas of work too, we believe in accomodative work culture which cognitive psychologists consider as not experience. Thank you.
