Asia has the largest number of malnourished children in the world. The Double Burden of Malnutrition in Asia was inspired by the massive challenge that this situation currently poses for Asia.

It describes the main driving forces behind the groundswell of under-nutrition, while shedding light on the emerging double burden of co-existing underweight and overweight, and the linkages between these two different forms of malnutrition.

So, is there any solution for the growing nutritional problems in India??

A Strong & Effective Food Campaign

idea posted by Bindu Narayan Product Development Manager, Care Biomedicals

The national food security may be politically important for India, but it should understand that the household food security is even more important. If there is no food in village households, it really doesn’t matter if the national food security is commendable.

What is also important is getting the food to the child. Even if the child takes the food, his body cannot absorb it unless you provide a clean environment and water. For a country like India, infant growth is as important as economic growth and the politicians should understand that.

The first question the Prime Minister should ask his minister is “how are the children growing?” and not “how is the economy growing?”

Thanks for the referral Ms.Bindu. I agree with your argument. So the political will power has to play the dominant role in order to eradicate this issues.

Nourishing undernourished kids in India should be viewed as a collective responsibility of every citizen & not only govt & or Ngos. If we stop wasting tons of food in various social parties, if wasting & throwing food is made punishable act then this problem can be minimized. India is quite self sufficient in it's food grain production , we need to channelize resources in proper direction.

Its true that Indian people are suffering from nutrition problem, because our vegetables and other commodities are sold from third party or through other various sources. This chain of distribution from one person to other decreases the freshness and nutritional value of the vegetable and other house old commodities. I would also like to add that due our population the cultivation lands are become less and less day by day and on the other hand India is also know as big exporter of food and grains, all best qualities are been exported to other countries and we the people of India are left with poor quality or less nutritional valued food products. In very sorry to say that we can only talk and debate about this but cant change the whole scenario i.e "A Healthy Nation". This is a serious issues and everyone need to think about it seriously, if they want a Health family and a Healthy Nation..... Please do not forget the famous saying "Healthy Is Wealth".

Inequality in income distribution, less education is the main reason for same. Per capital income of 35% of Indian population is less than $1 per day. And it was past of India, present of India and maybe the future also.

Many experienced person written here a lot of great idea to overcome the problem. But do you think that Govt. or many NGOs has not planned for same. Yeah they planned but not fully successful because of corruption. Many state Govt. started many campaign for same but mostly food or aid didn't reach fully to end users/suffered. Please write idea about that if an aid/campaign start for those people then How can it will reach in same manner to them................. ?????

Bindu Very well Idea but good question asked by vipin that what was the result of last campaigns. I have also heared about too many schemes run by state or centre Govt. but didn't get any positive result. The problem is still pending here. Although i have no more experienced like all but we have to discuss about failure of each and every campaign started by Govts or Non Govt. sector.  Maybe centre Govt will require to take some stringent decision to aviod/measure to correct failures. Thanks

Food for all till 2015

idea posted by Dr wahid Medical Officer, Deptt of Health Govt of J&K

Govt of India in its efforts to remove poverty started many schemes but none seems to pay dividends. First of all our system needs to be overhauled with little poltical interference for these schemes. Secondly no NGO should be involved in the schemes as NGOs just work for their own interests. And i dont have any Name in my mind any organization just working for humanity without worrying about the stakes. My idea is the scheme should be started first to with identification of worst hit areas. Then there should be a data base of the people with low nutrition intake. Then the Govt should provide nutritional diets either free of cost or on special subsidy. This work should be undertaken involving Sarpanch and Any Medical institution of the area. No Anganwari centre should be involved as their work is just in the papers of Social welfare Deptt. This Scheme Should be called as "Food for all till 2015"

Dear Bindu ji,

tackling with malnutrition in India is the concern for every NGO or government organization. they give this problem a solution in term of "magic bullet" of dosages of vitamins and very weird combination's of fortified food.

Vitamin A dificeiency (VAD) become the major problem throughout the south Asia in from last few decades. Green revolution crops have created more micronutrient deficiencies among the population whose staple diet is rice is admitted by International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) admitted this truth by themselves. In the wj=hole process the needs of the community were never considered and the taste or acceptability factor were never looked in to. Thus community can not own the programs run by state for malnutrition. the local factors were neglected by the implementers and planners.

This is what I have think when I picked up only one thread. However, this malnutrition wheel has many spokes which has to be scrutinized and each one of them can be a bigger issue in themselves.

I think we can not give only one solution to solve the problem. One idea alone will not even address single point properly in to the whole debate of malnutrition. We must be able to work from different direction, such as from policy and strategies of government. prioritization, allocation of resources, community involvement and political will and pressure to get the desired results along with proper implementation with community participation.

Increase income and empower each with knowledge

If you have read "Rich dad Poor dad", it says in today's world knowledge is the power. Information about the benefit of having nutrition need to go to each individual. At the same time how long donation will help them to have proper nutrtion food. Only one way, empower them with knowledge to make money. Ensure their growth and have good income. Nothing will work unless they have money.

The moment we have crossed our boundaries, pursuing every thing for self-interest, the country of this magnitude surely would face enormous inequity problem. We treat our peasants and other poor people akin to beasts. Unless we develop love and brotherhood, Poor will remain as Poor and the rich will become even more richer!

Anybody thinks for the poor .. Non-Govt or Govt ?

idea posted by ASOKE KUSARI Domestic Private Banking-Executive/Manager, A large leading PSU Bank - India

Simply by putting such a question here, U have really done a good job.

As usual we have very limited scope to up-lift the causes of the poor and their malnutrition problem. But ... U have drawn our notice ...  !

Mostly, they do not get two meals a day and children and adults go to sleep in empty stomach. Of late, young students are given a mid-day meal in their schools. Dont know what happens when such school remain closed.

We discuss GDP Growth, Industrial growth etc. and claim that our country is marching ahead in progress when a vast majority remains without food.

India, these days, we have more number of "World-rich" people .. one section is spending huge money even on flimsy grounds. Food and beverages are supplied in excess in Weddings/ Parties of Big people .. and the same time, children of poor families are not getting food.

Non-Govt. and Govt. should come forward to eradicate poverty from our country ...... otherwise ....   !
